My thoughts on the book;

Not read by me, but this was either bought as part of a bulk-buy "10 for £1" offer at a "withdrawn" books sale at Chelmsford Library, or as part of a bulk-buy "two books for 50p" charity shop deal, or left at our staff canteen along with other books people had finished with; or has been "donated" to the BookCrossing cause (or "your Book Travelling-thingy", as he calls it) by my dear Father.

The attached journal image should give you an idea which one of those sources this book came from. ;-)

"When schoolteacher Trixie Smith turns up asking questions about legendary film actress Lucretia von Wolff, Lucy Trent is not unduly alarmed. She rather enjoys the notoriety surrounding her glamorous but infamous grandmother, whose lovers were legion, whose scandals were numerous, whose life ended abruptly in a bizarre double murder and suicide at the Ashwood film studios in 1952.

Trixie Smith has uncovered information which she believes throws new light on the Ashwood case. In particular, she wants to know more about Alraune, the illegitimate child Lucretia was alleged to have borne at the outbreak of WWII. The child whose existence is surrounded in mystery. The child who may never have existed at all. But Trixie Smith's enquiries are brought to an untimely end.

Some days later, her mutilated corpse is discovered at the derelict site of the old Ashwood studios. In the ensuing murder investigation, Lucy is to discover disturbing facts about her family's poignant and often tragic history - a history which stretches from the glittering concert halls of 1920s Vienna to the bleak environs of wartime Auschwitz - and at the heart of it all lies the shocking truth about the mysterious child called Alraune.

About the Author;

Sarah Rayne is the pseudonym of a well-known British author who has written several highly-praised novels. She lives in Staffordshire."

I'll be leaving this book in the "hands" of the Monk who forms half of the double-sided statue of the Roman Centurion "Molsham" (Caesaromagus) and "The Monk" of the Dominican Friary, and which is located in Barrack Square, where Moulsham Street meets Baddow Road, in Chelmsford, Essex, CM2 0HU. It's about at number 10, Baddow Road, at the bottom of the main High Street, if that helps.

You can view the location of the Cathedral at this Google Maps page here (via TinyURL);

It'll have a yellow "PICK ME UP" note stuck on its front, featuring an all new random free gift, and be in a clear plastic bag.

This is a book that if you pick it up whilst you're waiting for the kettle to boil, you won't just miss your tea, you'll miss the whole day.

From cover to cover, this book is enthralling, with twists and turns you couldn't predict. A Gothic thriller well worth the read. Some parts, however, are not for the faint hearted...
