Daisy Miller

"Daisy Miller is an 1878 novella by Henry James first appearing in Cornhill Magazine in Jun-July 1879, and in book form the following year.[1] It portrays the courtship of the beautiful American girl Daisy Miller by Winterbourne, a sophisticated compatriot of hers. His pursuit of her is hampered by her own flirtatiousness, which is frowned upon by the other expatriates they meet in Switzerland and Italy."

Finished this short story in one day on the long weekend, and found it to be an interesting little book. This is the first book by Henry James that I have read. It was satisfying as a short story, with a clear beginning, middle and ending.

I've decided to set up my first Bookray with this lovely little book, to let it travel further in the world.
Here are the participants (note that the order might change if more people join):
* Maranlin - Canada (able to post international)
* judygreeneyes - USA (able to post international)
* Tsjara - Netherlands (able to post international)
* ruzena - Finland (able to post international) <--- book is here
* Anyone else? Send me a pm or sign up on the Forum group
......
The last participant can do what they wish: keep the book, set it free in the wild, or pass it on to someone else
Note: Order is subject to change based on shipping preferences and others joining the bookray.
How the bookray works:
* Someone will PM you for your address. PM them back and provide your address
* When you receive the book, please make a journal entry letting everyone know that you received it
* Put the book at the top of your TBR pile (under other rings/rays that arrived first)
* Read the book (take your time and enjoy the book, don't feel rushed to finish it but try to get it out to next reader within four weeks)
* When the end is in sight, check the book's journal and PM the next person to get their address
* Finish the book, make another journal entry and let everyone know what you thought of the book
* Send the book to the next person on the list (please use the cheapest shipping method available)
* Make a controlled release using your location as the release place (you the sender) to make the book's travel map consistent. Don't use "posted as bookray" or similar as this will not add to the books map.
Please feel free to PM me at any time with questions
Thanks for joining everyone.

This little book written in 1878 was an interesting story giving us a look at how restricted life was, especially for women in those times. A flirtatious woman or young girl who dares to walk out with a man on her own is considered scandalous. There is a definite class structure which we don't see today, at least not in North America. The story does take place in Europe, although the main characters are American. This is the first story I have read that was written in this era, and some of the language/words used is unfamiliar, but it was easy to understand the meanings.

What an odd little novel! It is a very short novel, originally published in 1878. It doesn't feel quite so old as some of the books I have read that were published in the early 1900's. Henry James' character Daisy is a very young and pretty American woman who flaunts social convention in Europe, talks incessantly (while really seeming to not say much of anything of value), flirts, and in general seems foolish and immature. She is from New York, but is travelling in Europe with her mother and younger brother. Her mother is completely ineffectual and lets Daisy do whatever she wants to do. The "society" in Rome that originally seeks to embrace this family is scandalized by Daisy's behavior. The story is told from the point of view of another American gentleman named Winterbourne, with whom Daisy makes acquaintance originally in Switzerland. He finds her odd but very intriguing and beautiful. The story shows the effects of societal norms in that period of time and location and the necessary role of parents in directing their children's behaviors. There was also, of course, quite a double standard between acceptable behaviors for men and women. In our modern society nothing Daisy did would seem slightly scandalous, so I take the attitudes entirely in the context of the times. I found it odd that the Americans living in Rome did not socialize much with the Italians.

This was a very quick and enjoyable read. Daisy did confuse me a bit, was she like Winterbourne thought very innocent and just not aware of how her behaviour would be looked upon by the members of society, or was she doing it on purpose (and just didn't care what other people thought)?
Also I found the mention of "Roman fever" quite interesting, I didn't know there was malaria in Rome at that time.
The book will be travelling onwards to ruzena soon.

EDIT. 15.9.2019
I have cherished this little beautiful thing way too long, and yet I'm afraid I have nothing of any originality to say - there are superior reviews above. Thank you all for sharing the book. Now I left it at Joensuun konservatorio. I hope that Daisy will write home soon :)
