With the country in the grip of economic malaise, Maisie Dobbs is relieved to accept an apparently straightforward assignment to investigate a potential land purchase. Her inquiries take her to a picturesque village in Kent during the hop-picking season, but beneath its pastoral surface she finds evidence that something is amiss. Mysterious fires erupt in the village with alarming regularity, and a series of petty crimes suggest a darker criminal element at work. A peculiar secrecy shrouds the village, and ultimately Maisie must draw on her finely-honed skills of detection to solve one of her most intriguing cases yet.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

This is the fifth book in the Maisie Dobbs series.

I loved it every bit as much as the others. Maisie detective skills and intuition help her solve another mystery that keeps you guessing. She treats every one she encounters with such human respect, not always found in this era where class structure is so prevelent.

Releasing at the April Meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers at the Joshua Tree Café.

It's been a while since I read the book; I'm looking forward to a little 'Maisie time'.

An enjoyable reread as bits of the book is recalled. The insights into Maisie's past and the glimpses into what she may decide for the future, plus a good mystery, makes for a rich storyline in the series.

Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing June meet-up. I'm slowly working my way through the Maisie Dobbs series. One more for the pile.

Another good one. A lot going on in the plot, but it all comes together. The impact of the war is so far-reaching and it never really stops. Maisie and everyone who were touched by the war will remember it for the rest of their lives. That's why it's kind a of sad when you have people discussing Hitler. You know what's coming and these poor people haven't gotten over the last war.

I eagerly want to start the next one. Billy can't go to Canada! He's so good as Maisie's assistant.

Journal Entry 13 by Eri-Cherry at Calgary, Alberta Canada on Saturday, January 12, 2013
Finished this delightful read in the Maisie Dobbs series. It was still fairly predictable, and I think there was only one curve I did not see coming. But it was still a very good read, and I think I enjoyed it more than some of the other ones.

Thanks for a fun read!
