Father Greeley always writes with a muscular, rapidly moving prose, and his plots are engaging and spicy. A particular strength of this novel is the 1940's Irish-Chicago setting, a post-war world where the "hero" seeks, as so many did then, to re-find that perfect mate, marry, and establish traditions. Unlike other Greeley works, this novel is not principally about the Church, but rather the "world" in which the Church is vital and essential to the Irish-American's identity. Recommended.
