I found this book in a Little Free Library, with its cover torn off. :(
I often 'clean up' LFLs by taking out tattered 20-year-old Avon catalogues, torn fragments of books, etc., so I picked up this one for recycling. When I took a closer look, lo and behold, I found that it was a Bookcrossing book, and all the way from Germany, no less! Since there weren't any pages missing, I determined to salvage it if I could, so it could continue its travels.
I have the best of intentions, but zero bookbinding experience! However, with a little ConTact adhesive shelf paper, some fancy white duct tape, and a felt tip pen, I believe I have created a serviceable cover for the book. I hope it will last through at least a couple more readers.
This is not my usual genre, but I always read books before I ‘cross them, so I gave it a try. Initially I was charmed by McCall Smith’s breezy writing style, and looked forward to the part where the fluffy part came to an end and he got into the meat of the story. Unfortunately, that never happened. By the time I was halfway through the book, I was beginning to realize that this was a story that had no ‘meat’ at all. It was almost unbearably light, with no substance at all- just a series of barely-connected threads of extremely superficial storyline. There was good use of humour and the characters were cute, but nothing really happened to them. (I also found it very strange that there was one character who kept having imagined conversations with her shoes, of all things. ) I found the whole thing quite unsatisfying.
