Wow. Police proceedural set in Sweden. Kurt Wallander is a cop in rural Sweden confonted with a rapidally changing society. Honest, well written, well worth reading. I haven't read something this compelling about the effects of social cahnge since the Martin Beck series (also set in sweden) by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo. I will look for more from this author.

Sorrysorrysorry - just picked this up and realized I hadn't officially caught the book. On my shelf now!

It's a little on the bleak side. But it's so persuasively written that, as the main character kept drinking coffee all day long, my own stomach started churning in sympathy.

And I was quite surprised to read about so much racism and xenophobia in Sweden, which I've always thought was such a progressive country. I suppose the urge to look at someone who's in any way different as a dangerous subhuman is a universal human trait.

But that's just one person's opinion. Future readers, what do YOU think of this book?
