As he journeys from the Deep South to the streets and basements of Harlem, from a horrifying "battle royal" where black men are reduced to fighting animals, to a Communist rally where they are elevated to the status of trophies, Ralph Ellison's nameless protagonist ushers readers into a parallel universe that throws our own into harsh and even hilarious relief. Suspenseful and sardonic, narrated in a voice that takes in the symphonic range of the American language, black and white, Invisible Man is one of the most audacious and dazzling novels of our century.

Received in the mail today as a surprise box-o-books Wishlist RABCK! Thank you!

1980 Vintage International trade paperback of the 1952 classic. This was on my list of best modern classics to read.

I can let this go after I read:
1947 The Battle Royal (short story) [read 2015]

Edit May 24, 2015: This had some really startling scenes in it. I listened to the whole thing on cd, with fantastic narration by actor Joe Morton. His wide range of vocalisms really gave life to the wide variety of characters here. This book started out a bit hostile, but as the story goes on, the abuse, manipulation and betrayal that he falls victim to in his naivette makes it understandable, and he emerges in the end as a surprisingly sympathetic character. The book runs long, and it gets bogged down in a lot of esoteric social theorizing that is really the author using it as an excuse to essay about his thoughts on society. And it spends a great deal of time involved with communist proseletysing that is rather dated. But overall it is a remarkable achievemnt. I currently have this ranked at #2127 on my ranked list of best-read books lately.
