'When he was twelve years old, Adam Ryan went playing in the woods one day with his two best friends. He never saw them again. Their bodies were never found, and Adam himself was discovered with his back pressed against an oak tree and his shoes filled with blood. He had no memory of what had happened. Twenty years on, Rob Ryan - the child who came back - is a detective in the Dublin police force. He's changed his name. No one knows about his past. Then a little girl's body is found at the site of the old tragedy and Rob is drawn back into the mystery. Knowing that he would be thrown off the case if his past were revealed, Rob takes a fateful decision to keep quiet but hopes that he might also solve the twenty-year-old mystery of the woods.'

He he - Well this book has been to Kefalonia and back!
Not bad as a debut novel. The only complaint I have is that it was a little on the long side. It was a real pager turner for me until about half way and then it started to drift a little. I've added this author to my list to look out for.
Sending off as a RABCK.

Wow! What a debut! Yes, I agree the book is a little on the long side. I think the characterization was amazing, felt that all the characters were real people. I liked the storyline, had a feeling that it would branch into two stories at one point. Not overly sure about the second ending (trying to be diplomatic here) as i googled and found that there was a general confusion about French's endings in this book and other books. I think the book was mostly very believable, and the story was really good. There's a sadness and reality to the characters, a mortality. Would highly recommend. However, it's not the sort of reading where every question is answered at the end, but the main question is answered.
