Sleeping Beauties

I love reading Susanna Moore. I especially enjoy her writing when the setting is Hawaii.
Controlled release to Ravencat, Enjoy.
Book arrived today with a beautiful card. Thank-you MarthaEllen for this Rabck. After I have finished reading it I will journal my thoughts and make sure that it travels on once again.
From the cover: Susanna Moore's novel is set in a Hawaii whose shimmering beauty and melancholy traditions are at once seductive and dangerously hard to leave. Or so they prove for Clio, a thirteen year old runaway who is raised by her eccentric aunt Emma, a collector of legends, myths, and rites of their native island. Emma teaches Clio what it means to "swim out of current time," to exchange her small past for a grand one. But when that same past begins to take on a crushing weight, Clio on impulse marries a well-known Hollywood actor, providing her with the promise escape from her family and the entanglements of island life.

This was the first book of Susanna Moore that I have read and found this book to be quite fascinating especially with the Hawaiian theme and numerous references of its culture and language. It was a little slow going for me in the beginning but as the storyline progressed with Clio and her persistent determination to leave Tommy the Hollywood actor to return to her life as she knows it in Hawaii, I was enthralled with the story and the final outcome of her quest. Thank-you MarthaEllen for sharing this book with me.

From time to time I was sure that I could see the houses with the gardens she was describing and the forest, the ponds, all her descriptions were really vivid.
I would love if there was some kind of a small dictionary at the end for all the hawaiian names, places and things.
Generally, I liked this novel but most of all I liked the way the writer presented Clio and felt sympathy for her, as she was trying all her life to escape from abusive people or from permanent situations. After a while reading the book, I had the impression that she was trying to escape from herself, the Clio who is part of the myths and stories, the true island girl.

Finally read the book and...
Definitely a book for women, filled with traditional themes and yet, mesmerising in its way. We have the clash of ancient traditions and modern society and those who want to live to the max, without traditions. And the main character gets caught in that, having to choose for herself at the end what she wants. The writing is fluid yet tenuous sometimes but, it does its work and gets you into the story. You either love or hate the characters, I felt there weren’t no in between possibilities. I finished the book, not knowing exactly how I felt about it but it left me with the impression that traditions shouldn’t die, they should be kept though not follow as a religion. I would say it’s a good read.
