Arrived in today's mail. Thank you Dave. X
I always thought that Solzhenitsyn's writing would be too 'heavy' for me, but I've really enjoyed what I've read so far.
Heading off to lamelemon in Romania as part of the 'wishlist tag' game. Enjoy!
Safely picked up from the post office, thanks a lot cat207 for the 1001 wishlist tag! This was a nice choice, I really like Russian literature although I tend to favour classics since they're easier to come by. Hope to have this one on the road again in a short while :)
Despite its often gloomy tone, I read this book at ease and rather liked it. One more off the list, and a short one, too. Thanks for sharing, let's see where it ends up next!

Ivan Denisovich has been sent to a Siberian labour camp after being accused of being a spy when he escaped capture on the German front, and spends his time pursuing strategies to gain the extra few grammes of bread that might mean survival for the remainder of his ten year stretch. This slim volume covers the events of one day, but manages to thoroughly describe the conditions and way of life of the camp's inhabitants. Well worth reading, this certainly deserved its Nobel Prize.

Put into Authors Beginning With S bookring.
I read One Day ... back in 2006. I loved it but won't be putting myself through that gruelling day again.
My thoughts from 2006:
Fascinating, stark and bleak. Man's inhumanity to man, eh?! To think that this and every other day would be the same or worse, but the human spirit is quite amazing the way it copes with such remorseless desolation. Take Shukhov's quote on the final page: "A day without a dark cloud. Almost a happy day." Wow!
I also loved this quote from page 64: "How often had Shukhov in his youth fed oats to horses! Never had it occurred to him that there'd come a time when his whole soul would crave for a handful of them." Yes, this book should make us thankful for what we have, but humans are basically ungrateful sods & find it easy to forget.
I surprised myself by really enjoying this book, although enjoy seems the wrong word to use in relation to such a life. The prose was startlingly clear and concise, leaving little or nothing of conjecture regarding life in a Siberian labour camp.
