Jessica, Nonnie and Ben are left 50 pounds each by their Irish grandfather in his will, to be spent exactly as they like - with some wild repercussions.

Jessica is large, energetic and clumsy, and her reaction is one of enthusiatic plans to start a pottery or build a theatre. Nonnie, on the other hand, who is quiest and retiring, determines to add Grandfather O'Rafferty's decrepit old horse to her menagerie. Ben is torn between a viariety of things - his desire to have a cow and a portable television, and modernising his bedroom, with a conveyor belt for pop records and catalogues and bananas that he might suddenly want in bed.

But the children's plans are interuppted by the arrival of an eccentric old aunt from Ireland, who eventually helps some of the ideas to materialise.
