Bourne, an Australian in his thirties, fights as a private in the Battle of the Somme, alongside men of all ages from all over Britain.
This is the unexpurgated version that was thought so shocking on publication in 1929 (due to its bad language - and it is bad!) and is a fictionalised account of Manning's own time in France in WW1. I didn't find it an easy read, but it was worth persevering with this frank account of events which have just passed out of living memory.
One of the 1001 BTRBYD.

This has been damaged due to a damp problem in the house so unfortunately has had to be disposed of.
