Absolutely brilliant book by an author recommended a lot by BookCrossers who love vampire books. This is the first in a series of vampire novels set around Anita Blake, a vampire hunter. She is tough, she is feisty and lives in a USA which has given the undead equal rights with the rest of us. Her main job is as an Animator, someone who raises the undead [zombies] which apparently is quite lucrative. On the side she works with the police as a consultant on vampires and the undead, which sometimes involves execution. As you can imagine she isn't a popular person with the vampire community, so it is rather odd that they want her to investigate a series of vampire murders. Normally, Anita would tell them to get stuffed but they have made an offer she can't refuse.

I want to read more Anita Blake books. I am now totally hooked and can understand why Laurell K. Hamilton books are so popular. There is no absolutes [good versus evil] and the author leaves you wanting to know more about Anita and her world. Hamilton doesn't give you too much background information and let it interfere with the story but lets the action dictate what Anita [it is written in the first person] tells you. I'm now a fan! Give me more! I want more!

A friend had suggested this author to me and I originally began reading the series out of order, devouring the books as quickly as the book store had them in stock! It's nice to go back and read the introduction novel of my favorite Slayer.

This is the first of the Anita Blake books I've read - I like to start at the beginning when possible. I recently read the first book in the Merry Gentry series as well. I think I prefer Merry's world over this one. This one's a bit bloodthirsty and gory for me. But I do want to try at least one or two more in this series - who knows, I may decide I enjoy it after all. But gore is not usually my thing. I will admit, LKH is quite inventive!

Thanks to Talkland and LadyGothic for sharing this one. This will soon be going to Mysteryfan03, who has it on her wish list, to thank her for sending me books for the book fair.

I liked this book enought that I would like to read more of the series. However, I also like the Merry series better. This one is not as erotic, but more gore and a different type of story. In both, Hamilton makes it easy to "see" her characters. Thanks so much, MaryZee for sending it to me!
