Ankh-Morpork is a wretched hive of scum and villainy, where the assassins, thieves, and prostitutes have organized guilds (the latter call themselves "Seamstresses", hem, hem). The rightful king was killed long ago, and now the dictatorial, subtle, and well-organized Patrician Lord Vetinari runs things. The city Watch is a joke, their commander a drunk, and their newest recruit a well-meaning but naive young man raised as a dwarf, carrying a book of laws that no one but him cares enough to enforce. And now, together, the Watch has to solve the most heinous crime in the city's history. SOMEONE HAS STOLEN A BOOK!!
Specifically, it's a slightly-charred old volume snatched from the library at Unseen University, entitled "The Summoning Of Dragons". And it works a lot better than expected. When a dragon comes to terrorize the populace, a hero must rise to slay it. Too bad all that's available is a handful of barely-capable cops, an insane six-foot-tall dwarf with a decidedly un-magical sword, a rich lady who breeds little pet dragons, and an orangutan.
Here is the start of the rise to greatness for Sam Vimes and Carrot Ironfounderson. They don't really have many places to go but up.
The audacity of arresting a DRAGON is impressive in itself, as well and absolutely hilarious.
Quotes:
The relevant equation is knowledge = power= energy = matter = mass; a good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read.
It is said that the gods play games with the lives of men. But what games ,and why, and the identities of the pawns, and what the game is, and what the rules are--who knows?
Best not to speculate.
Thunder rolled...
It rolled a six.
Ankh-Morpork didn't rear. Rather, it sort of skulked, clinging to the soil as if afraid someone might steal it.
People were stupid, sometimes. They thought the library was a dangerous place because of all the magical books, which was true enough, but what made it really one of the most dangerous places there could ever be was the simple fact that it was a library.
You can't give me my job back, ... It was never yours to take away. I was never an officer of the city, or an officer of the king, or an officer of the Patrician. I was an officer of the law.

Packing this up to send to a friend
This was one of the "cute" ones by Pratchett. I still love his work, but this one was of the lesser. Still an enjoyable read. I will release this after my boys have finished reading.
