I read about the awesomeness of this series on TVTropes, so I picked up the first book to take a look. Fun and engrossing, with some interesting variations on urban fantasy. I especially liked the idea of holding a vampire at bay with a pentacle, because it's a symbol of magic and THAT's what a wizard has faith in.

Harry Dresden can bend reality to his will, but he can't find work. Most of the calls he gets are people asking if he's for real. He consults with the police on unusual crimes, but that's neither steady nor safe, and often gruesome. Technology tends to go haywire around him. The talking skull in his basement that helps him with his spells is an uncooperative pervert. Certain factions of the White Council want him dead, and there's a guy with a big sword just waiting for a chance to carry out the sentence. And the rent is past due. But at least now he's got a case to solve. Too bad it's put him in a position to make enemies with the mob, the White Council, a vampire, and the Chicago P.D.

Quotes:
Paranoid? Probably. But just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that there isn't an invisible demon about to eat your face.

I made the vampire cry. Great. I felt like a real superhero. Harry Dresden, breaker of monsters' hearts.

I was not a murderer. I was Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. I was a wizard. Wizards control their power. The don't let it control them. And wizards don't use magic to kill people. They use it to discover, to protect, to mend, to help. Not to destroy.
