Following the birth of her child a woman is on compulsory bedrest as determined by her husband.

It's a very short (36 pages) mental horror book, which portrays the lack of power a married woman had over herself in the early 20th century.

It has made me think about how people lived and interacted in the early 20th Century, and how social interaction and people's expectations of life and freedom have changed. Not bad for just 36 pages of reading!

This story certainly packs a punch, not just from a feminist perspective. It also explains a lot about the still prevailing patronising attitudes of doctors towards patients.
Enjoyable quick read with a useful afterword about the authors own circumstances which prompted her to write this story.

not bad for a story this short. I like books that make me actually think and I haven't read lots of stories like this. Very interesting story, thank you for this great birthday gift!

This great little book is going back to United Kingdom tomorrow. =) I found this from someone's wishlist.

Thank you so much slipperbunny! I had forgotten that you had offered to send me this so it came as a lovely surprise. Reading the back, I conclude that I should postpone the reading of it as I am very close to giving birth myself! But this was recommended to me when I went to a bookcrossing meet-up and I look forward to reading it at a suitable moment.

Just making a note that when I've read this I'll be sending it to maid-of-kent by way of thanks to her for sending me The Good Soldier Schweik.

This came to an abrupt end for me as I hadn't realised that the latter half of this edition is an Afterward, rather than a second chapter. Interesting I thought that in that Afterward not single reference was made to the quite possible diagnosis of post-natal depression, as if it was taboo. Or post-natal psychosis that I have heard of too. The Afterward focused far more on the peripheral characters, husband, relations and doctors than I myself did when reading, but it was interesting and pertinent. The institution of marriage has indeed some things to answer for, even in this day and age. What I enjoyed most about this was the total obsession with the images on the wall, of the type that I myself used to be capable of as a girl. Not quite the same, but I was always terrified in the night of going to the loo at my grandma's house: I was convinced the crocodile skin suitcases she had came to life, and it was with GREAT speed that I ran down the long corridor.... I just mostly wish this book was longer... I could have become more absorbed by the wallpaper without getting bored! Thank you slipperbunny for sending it to me. Sorry it took me so long to read. My daughter is now nearly seven, bursting with the joy of life and happily spared as yet of the many tribulations that life can throw at us!

Quite amazing - I had forgotten that I intended to post this to maid-of-kent - I have just finished reading The Good Soldier Schweik prior to this (which she sent me!), so I'll check if she still wants this!
