Tumba, Sweden. A triple homicide - all of the victims from the same family and murdered without apparent motive - captivates Detective Inspector Joona Linna, who goes against the grain of the national police and demands to investigate the murders himself.

The killer is at large, and it appears that the elder sister of the family escaped the carnage. But she is still missing and it might be only a matter of time until she too is found dead. Where can Linna begin? The sole witness is an intended victim - the boy whose parents and younger sister were killed before his eyes. Whoever committed the crimes intended for this boy to die: he has suffered multiple knife wounds and has been taken to the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, where he lies in a state of shock.

Linna, devoid of enough information on which to build his investigation and barred by doctors from questioning the one surviving witness, who is in no condition to talk, finally succeeds in enlisting the help of disgraced specialist, Dr Erik Bark. Dr Bark has sworn he will never again practice hypnosis, as it is ethically dubious and possibly scarring, but then he breaks his promise ...

I have marked this book "reserved", not because I have someone in mind to give it to, but only because it is not available outside of my area. It's a hardcover book, and heavy, so I will not be mailing it anywhere.

It was a decent murder mystery but I can't say I love the style of writing. I noticed at the back of the book after I'd finished reading it that the author, Lars Kepler, is actually two people, a couple, who write together. That may be why it has such a disjointed feel at times.

The main police inspector of the story actually had two investigations going at once and there were times when they talked about one of them so long that when they came back to the other one, I'd actually forgotten who the person was they were talking about! And he was the killer in one of the investigations! And, more importantly, I read this book in two days so it isn't as though I'd set it down for a long time and forgotten things!

I found the names of the people and places very difficult to read because I couldn't begin to pronounce most of them since the stories took place in Sweden. I managed to get by mostly by giving them an easy pronunciation or by ignoring the street names. lol
