I'm not sure the world building is really up to a series of eight or nine books. Maybe I wasn't helped by reading the next book before I read this one (the list in the front of the next book swaps them around).
However, the characters continue to develop. We don't get much development for Hiccup and his friends, but we get some interesting back-story for his parents.
