One Day (Vintage Contemporaries Original)

I borrowed this book from a friend and have tried to return it, but she has told me to keep it. I held onto it for a year... just in case she changed her mind and wanted it back. She still does not want the book so naturally I have registered it for bookcrossing.
July 15 is the day we meet Dex and Emma (and they meet each other as well). Every year on July 15 we check in with Dex and Emma and we have the opportunity to see where they are and what they are up to. I enjoyed keeping up with the characters and watching them grow and mature into adults. Although it wasn't the ending I would have chosen for this story, David Nicholls pulls it off well and it fits right into the July 15th theme carried through the whole book.

Arrived in the mail yesterday. Thanks Aberpeter!
The book follows Dex and Emma's relationship over twenty years. We meet up with them every year on July 15. As the years go by, they lead separate lives yet still have a bond which at times is stronger than at other times. All their hopes and dreams from that first meeting are not always realized and their lives have led them down different paths from where they had thought they would go.
This was a different way to tell the story of a couples' lives yet it was a satisfying read that gave the reader enough information over the years to follow along.

Arrived safe and sound - thanks so much for sharing! I saw the movie a few weeks ago, and I liked it, but suspected that the book would be better... isn't that usually the case?
I really liked this. It was a compelling story and an enjoyable read. A few parts I thought were a little too drawn out - when it went into detail about Emma's speech to her student, for instance - but then understood the significance later. I agree with aberpeter that it wasn't the ending I'd have picked, but it fit.
I had read several complaints about how Emma's character was dulled down in the movie, and I agree completely. She's much richer, fuller, and just generally more interesting in the book. Like someone had some complex about women, and couldn't envision a leading lady who'd [possible spoiler, highlight to read] had an affair, or who wasn't smugly satisfied in her teaching job, or who was humiliatingly caught by someone she'd mentored drinking and smoking and otherwise being a mess. Seriously, that last scene was my favorite part! Otherwise, though, I thought the "snapshot" concept actually translated very well to the big screen, and in some ways better, since you really can sum up a regular boring day in a glance.

This is now heading out on a short bookray! You can take your time on this ray; there's no need to rush through in a month - just be sure to journal it when received, and if you check in after a few months with a status update, there's no problem.

Just received it today. I have a couple rings/rays in front but look forward to reading it. Thanks for sharing flewry.
Just couldn't get into it. Sending off to BayAreaBookie this week.
Received the book and will add it to the To Be Read pile and then send it on its way.
Updated - could not get into the book, either, so it will go on its way to the next person.

Mailing to the next person on the bookray list, agrace. Enjoy!
Thanks for including me in this ray! The book is safe and will re-embark soon!
I understand why some said that they could not get into the book. At one point, I found myself thinking that it was good we only caught the characters once a year because if we went with them day by day we would be bored to tears. But it ends much less predictably than I thought it would and in adding more to day one, adds much more to the story.
Alberpeter, do you want the book back or have any preferences as to what I do with it?
