Eleni ist eine historische Figur. Sie lebte als Bäuerin in einem griechischen Bergdorf, in einer einfach aber fest gefügten Gemeinschaft, in der alles Handeln stets den Männern vorbehalten blieb. Verheiratet mit einem Mann, der es vorzog, in Amerika zu leben, versucht sie in der vergifteten Atmosphäre des Bürgerkriegs (1946-1949) ihre vier Töchter und ihren Sohn Nicholas allein großzuziehen. Als ihre halbwüchsigen Töchter von den Partisanen zwangsrekrutiert werden sollen, sinnt sie auf Flucht.
Über den Autor
Nicholas Gage ist der Sohn Elenis. Er wurde 1939 als Nikola Gatzoyiannis in Lia/Nordgriechenland geboren und emigrierte 1949, nach dem Tod seiner Mutter, mit seinen Geschwistern nach Amerika. Er studierte in Boston und New York und wurde Chefreporter und Auslandskorrespondent der "New York Times". "Eleni" wurde in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt und erfolgreich verfilmt. Mit "Elenis Kinder" setzte Gage 1990 seinen Bericht fort.
