[2018] - Authors A-Z reading challenge

A new year is around the corner, and I'm therefore launching the 2018 edition of this reading challenge.

In this challenge, the goal is to read books by 26 different authors through the year, where the name of the authors (first name, middle name or last name) starts on each letter in the alphabet (A to Z). One author, one letter; so you can count each author only once, by the first letter in the first name OR middle name OR last name.
NOTE: The letters "Q" and "X" can be anywhere in the author's name.

If you have any special letters in your alphabet (i.e. Æ, Ø and Å here in Norway), you might count these as well. Or if you read books in a non-latin script, like Thai, Cyrillic, Arabic, you can list these letters as well.

And when you've finished a book, make a post here, telling about the book. Please tell the title, name of author, bookcrossing link if applicable, what the book is about and what you think of it.

You can count the same book in this challenge and the "Titles A-Z" reading challenge (http://www.bookcrossing.com/forum/6/548374) or other reading challenges if you want to.

You may include an alpabetical list of the authors you've read for this challenge in your posts as well.

Maybe this will bring us out of our reading comfort zones?

Happy reading!

Me too.
I have lots of fun trying new authors.

first name or last name, maybe both?

first name or last name, maybe both?

That's up to you to decide! :)

I know that I'll do both first and last names, as well as middle names. But if you want to stick with either first OR last names, that's perfectly fine as well.

CathrineB, you challenged me to look for authors in a different way. It is hard to believe that so many letters of the alphabet can be duplicated without reading several books by the same author.
This year I am not joining the challenge because I've given myself some personal challenges that involve reading multiple books by one author.
I thank you for doing this and may be back in 2019 if you do it again. Best Wishes to all taking on this challenge again.

Flint, Shamini - A Most Peculiar Malaysian Mystery. The first in the Inspector Singh Investigates series which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The House on Blackberry Hill by Donna Alward. A book that was fair but had a little bit of more romance than I like to read.

I've never done a challenge like this and due to family circumstances I am very unsure what I will be able to achieve this year. I thought this challenge sounds like one which should have an element of fun, the probability of new authors (though looking at last years books I could have probably done this last year with what I was reading anyway!), and a possibility of completion in the time so I would like to try this challenge this year.

A start for me would be the book I have already completed earlier this month.

The Spies of Warsaw by Alan Furst is, as the name suggests, a spy novel set in 1938 mainly in Warsaw. I've read many by this author and knew to expect a well researched and revealing insight into the situation at that time. A good easy read which encourages you to use the 'grey matter' to work through the various situations. However, I've not registered this book with Bookcrossing so no links.

Sure you can join! :) There's no requirement that one has to finish the challenge, even though one joins.

Dystopian novel.... First Banned Book in Russia!

I learned through Wikipedia that We "became the first work banned by the Soviet censorship board" in 1921. I also learned from Wikipedia that We by Yevgeny Zamyatin directly inspired the following works:
Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (1932)
Ayn Rand's Anthem (1938)
George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949)
Kurt Vonnegut's Player Piano (1952)
Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed (1974)

This is one of my all time favorites :-)

I wanted to love 'WE' so much, but the ebook formatting was awful for this book and the translation was off and also missing words in sentences made it difficult to enjoy this novel.

I am giving this novel a perfect rating. It is very well written. An Untamed State by Roxane Gay is the first book I've read by Roxane Gay. I cannot emphasize enough what a fabulous writer Roxane Gay is. I will definitely be reading more of her works in the future.

All I can add is that An Untamed State is a very difficult book to read due to the topic of the novel. If you cannot stomach novels dealing with the topic of kidnapping, rape/gang rape, and violent assault that repeatedly happens to the main character in this novel and the aftermath of dealing with PTSD, then do not read this novel.

I read this short book (52 pages) in a single sitting. It's more of an essay. https://captivatedreader.blogspot.com/---/we-should-all-be-feminists-by.html

The Three Miss Margarets by Louise Shaffer. A good book that took me a while to complete because I was in a reading slump.

Three months of the year passed and this is surprisingly filling up a bit. Surprising as I am not choosing books to fill in this (as yet) and have just been reading either what I fancy or monthly Book Club books. I can see however that I will have to add a few more registered books to the list

A : Augusto de Angelis ; The Murdered Banker http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/14687106/
B : Stephen Booth ; Secrets of Death
C : Jeremy Clarkson; Don't Stop me Now http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/14506685/

"Touching the Void" by Joe Simpson - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13001380
The true story about two mountain climbers, Joe and Simon, climbing a mountain in Peru when Joe falls down and breaks his leg. Simon lowers him down the mountainside, but ends up having to cut the rope to save his own life. And he believes that Joe has died from the fall, which didn't happen. Joe manages to get to base camp two days after Simon, badly injured and exhausted, after barely drinking for most of the journey, and beeing without food and painkillers. It's really impressive!! I would have liked to see the face of Simon and Richard (or whatever his name was!) in base camp when they realized that Joe had arrived there!

Wow - are they still talking?!!

Wow - are they still talking?!!

Yes, Simon and Joe had contact afterwards. They talked it through in the tent in basecamp, and agreed that cutting the rope had been the right thing to do. Joe fully understood why Simon had done it, and would have done the same if he had been in Simon's shoes. So there weren't really any harsh feelings afterwards (well, Joe didn't want to leave the basecamp and head for Lima after 3 hours of sleep though...!)

I recall reading that book about five years ago now with our monthly Book Club and it left a very vivid impression on me at the time too. Our whole group were very animated over this book - one of the few the whole group actually read and had long discussions over.
Very good read and that comes from someone who knows zero about climbing other than what I've read here and a couple of other books!
