Anyone up for a reading challenge?

In this challenge, the goal is to read books by 26 different authors through the year, where the name of the authors (first name or last name) starts on each letter in the alphabet (A to Z). One author, one letter; so you can count each author only once, by the first letter in the first name OR last name. NOTE: The letters "Q" and "X" can be anywhere in the author's name.

If you have any special letters in your alphabet (i.e. Æ, Ø and Å here in Norway), you might count these as well.

And when you've finished a book, make a post here, telling about the book. Please tell the title, name of author, bookcrossing link if applicable, what the book is about and what you think of it.

You may include an alpabetical list of the authors you've read for this challenge in your posts as well.
Like:
A: Alameddine, Rabih
B: Bowen, James
C: Carsten Jensen
[...]
Z:

If you've got any questions, post here or send me a message.

Happy reading!

I'm already doing this for two other groups.... but for the letters "Q" and "X" the letters can be anywhere in the author's name.

Sounds like a good idea! Will implement that one!

over at Goodreads, but their rules are more stringent (number of pages, last two months for easing of Q, X, and Z). Will try to post here, too. I haven't succeeded with the challenge year (still need U, X, Y, and Z) or last, but maybe in 2016?

Not sure how far I'll get, and will be starting with "D" (unless A - C pops up), but I'm reading D....onward for the Author name bookring, so will double up (A-C waiting, that's why they're done!)

"Hester and Harriet" by Hilary Spiers. This was to be my Christmas book read, but it didn't come through till after the big day. It was a charming and attention-holding read and I'm hoping it might be the start of a series.

https://www.allenandunwin.com/---/Hester-and-Harriet-Hilary-Spiers-9781925266412
"Hold on to your tea cups - you're about to fall head over heels for Hester and Harriet, whose quiet and ordered Christmas celebrations are turned upside down with the arrival of their runaway teenage nephew and a young refugee woman and her baby.
When widowed sisters, Hester and Harriet, move together into a comfortable cottage in a pretty English village, the only blights on their cosy landscape are their crushingly boring cousins, George and Isabelle, who are determined that the sisters will never want for company. Including Christmas Day."

'The Reapers are Angels' by Alden Bell; post apocalypse, zombie novel, but the zombies were a minor part of the story. It reminded me a bit of Station Eleven, but a shadow of it. Follows a young girl who was born after the event and has only known the life of in her present time. Nice, descriptive writing at times.

'Creatures of a Day; and Other Tales of Psychotherapy' by Dr. Irvin Young

Enjoyed these 10 stories that the author says are about patients with maladies that defied categorizing. Very interesting with much food for thought and I will put him on my author to be read list. He has novels as well as non-fiction published.

http://www.goodreads.com/---/22825544-creatures-of-a-day
"All of us are creatures of a day,” wrote Marcus Aurelius, “rememberer and remembered alike.” In his long-awaited new collection of stories, renowned psychiatrist Irvin D. Yalom describes his patients’ struggles—as well as his own—to come to terms with the two great challenges of existence: how to have a meaningful life, and how to reckon with its inevitable end."

H- Harris, Charlaine...A Fool and His Honey http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13780435 This book is part of her Aurora Teagarden Mystery series. This book was about the main character's husband's niece who shows up on their doorstep with her new baby. They go to dinner leaving the niece in their garage apartment. When they return, they find the niece's husband dead on the apartment steps, the niece missing, and the baby under the bed fast asleep...plus the husband's best friend asleep in their house. The book is about them trying to locate the niece. I loved the book, but hated the ending...one of the characters I really liked dies. I still need to read the last two books in the series.

I'll eventually register this.

M: MOORE, Christopher - Secondhand Souls
Audio download read by Fisher Stevens; sequel to A Dirty Job

Typical crazy Christopher Moore: of course the underworld is getting feisty again, but really this book is about the quest to get Charlie (former death merchant, second-hand store proprietor, widower, father, and beta male) out of the cobbled-together "squirrel person" body made for him by Audrey the Buddhist nun and into a real one - he misses his daughter, who thinks he's dead.

If you liked A Dirty Job you'll probably enjoy this. If you haven't read that one you're likely to be confused.

William Bonadio, Julia's Mother http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13788071/
This was okay. An emergency pediatrician reflects on the big impacts of his life. He seems a little retrograde though, he treats children because they aren't 'responsible' for their illness. Okay. He is also very, very impressed with the primal force of a mother's love.

Marion Hale, The Truth about Sparrows http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13791033/
I loved this book. I thought I would just read a chapter or two to get a flavor for what area of the Twin Cities I should release it in. Instead, I couldn't put it down. Think of Grapes of Wrath for children. Dustbowl Diaspora tale of coming of age.

Jerri Nielsen, Ice Bound: A Doctor's Incredible Battle for Survival http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13789785/
Fascinating. Nielsen, a very private woman, was 'outed' as the doctor in Antartica who came down with an aggressive breast cancer. Curiousity was very intrusive, and so she wrote this book about her time on the South Pole and the beauty and wonder she found there. Look for it in the 2016 Medicine Chest box probably.

Sandra Hempel, The Inheritor's Powder http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13797997
I wanted to like this book more than I did. The problem is the author really wanted to write about the chemist/engineer/lecturer/inventor James Mason, but there wasn't enough material. So she threw in a lot of extraneous murders, arguements over who were the poisoners of society, and the development of forensic science.

My list can be found here

That one's on my TBR shelf: picked up a copy at the poison exhibit at the AMNH a couple of years ago ( http://www.amnh.org/---/the-power-of-poison ).

A cozy mystery set in Michigan which was funny but an easy read. It was interesting to read about cities that are close to my home.

With any luck, joining a few challenges will help me end 2016 with less unread books!

.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

Ten strangers are invited to a house party on the mysterious Soldier Island and one by one they start to die...

I already knew how this ended but it was interesting to see what techniques the author used and how she built tension in the narrative.

[A is also for Alan Bennett (The Uncommon Reader, Alexander McCall Smith (Emma), Ann Patchett (Commonwealth), Annie Proulx (Barkskins), Ali Smith (Public Library), and Andy Weir (The Martian)]

Wolf Winter by Cecilia Ekback - murder mystery/historical novel set in 18th century Sweden. I really enjoyed this novel, looking forward to more from this author.

[C is also for Carol Anne Duffy (Answering Back) and Cecilia Ekback (In the Month of the Midnight Sun)]

The House on the Strand by Daphne Du Maurier - a historical/psychological thriller telling the story about man who uses mind-altering drugs to travel back in time. Set in Cornwall, very atmospheric, a great read.

Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert

I enjoyed this discussion of creativity and finding a way to embrace a creative life without fear or shame. Some inspiring passages that will help me follow my own path.

[E is also for Emily Lockhart (We Were Liars)]

Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi

This is the story of Boy Novak, who escapes her abusive father, her stepdaughter Snow and Snow's half-sister Bird. It weaves fairy tale with reality, exploring female identity and race.
Oyeyemi''s writing always gets me hooked, even if I'm never completely satisfied with the result.

[H is also for Hannah Rothschild (The Improbability of Love), Homer (The Iliad) and Howard Jacobson (Shylock is my Name)]

The Gap of Time by Jeanette Winterson

A compelling modern day retelling of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, examining the themes of jealousy, fear, time and forgiveness. Highly recommended.

[J is also for James Wood (The Nearest Thing to Life), Jean-Paul Didierlaurent (The Reader on the 6.27), Jo Marchant (Decoding the Heavens), J.R.R. Tolkien (The Children of Hurin), Julia Rochester (The House at the Edge of the World), and Julian Barnes (The Noise of Time)]

The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan

In a flooded world, Callanish guards a watery graveyard and North travels with her bear on the circus ship Excalibur. The meeting of these two girls changes their lives forever.

SPQR by Mary Beard - A history of ancient Rome. I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would, but disappointed.

[M is also for Marian Pallister (Cruachan: The Hollow Mountain)

Uprooted by Naomi Novic - a really enjoyable fairy tale with monsters and wizards and an enchanted wood.

Temeraire - the peninsular war with dragons.

[N is also for Neil Gaiman (Make Good Art, Trigger Warning, The View from the Cheap Seats) and Neil deGrasse Tyson (Death by Black Hole)]

Vanessa and Her Sister by Priya Parmar

A fascinating fictionalised account of the lives of Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf in the early 20th century. I'll be thinking about this for a while. Recommended.

[P is also for Penelope Fitzgerald (The Golden Child) and Paraic O'Donnell (The Maker of Swans)]

The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry

A story about love, science, religion and superstition set in Victorian London and Essex. Quite engaging but I found the ending a little unsatisfying.

[S is also for Scott Lynch (The Republic of Thieves) and Stephen King (On Writing)]

The Past by Tessa Hadley - a family gathers at their holiday home for one last summer. Great writing but I felt the story lacked something.

A Midsummer NIght's Dream, one of the shorter plays and not one of my favourites.

[W is also for Wyl Menmuir (The Many)]

I would like to join, but have no idea what amount of books I will manage to read. This new challenge may get me going.
Last year I read so little, the least number for many years. There were lots of reasons for this. But now MTBR is calling to be conquered again.

One question: I see that many participants have already begun lists and allocated a letter to an author. IS is possible to change, later on, if the other letter is wanted e.g. change from the first to the second name's letter?

Yes, it's ok to chance the letter you list the author by later on, by counting by last name instead of first name or vice versa.

Crusie's novel was a contemporary chick-lit romance; Zoe York's novel was a contemporary romance set in Ontario, which works for Canadian challenge

Lilian Darcy's is a romance combined with a family crisis.

Vendela Vida, The Diver's Clothes Lie Empty. http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13801468 is a very interesting novel. It's one of those books you keep reading, even though you don't like it. The basic theme is what is our identity. A woman seeking a new life gets her passport and ID stolen on a trip to Morrocco.

Terrie M. Williams, The Odyssey of KP2 http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13803590/
Cute animal in peril, with some bureaucratic and chauvinistic elements involved. Light weight fun, although there was a little science involved.

The last book in a trilogy about a family over a hundred year span. A lengthy book that took a lot of time for me to finished but I am glad that I completed this book.

C. C.J. Box, Out of Range http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13808383/
I enjoyed this. Joe Pickett as western Game Warden. Conservative, thoughtful, he tracks down crazies on both side of the fence in an entertaining way.

G. Sue Grafton, Q is for Quarry http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13812232/
I hadn't read any of Grafton's works for a while. Great character, and unusual in several aspects; first, this was a WBN 2012 Book I found at the goodwill; second, this book obviously meant something to the author. Grafton uses a unidentified Jane Doe from 1969 to springboard into a very complex mystery.

K. Karen Hesse, Out of the Dust. http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13813776/
Not a fan. YA account of the trials of staying on a farm in the Dust Bowl, but told through prose Poems in the central character's voice. Easy way out to explain not developing other characters, but does not explain the flat portrayal of the young narrator's voice.

L. Sophie Littlefield, The Missing Place http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13818398
In depth look at the strains of the ND oil Fields, and the costs associated with them on local soceities. Also the issue of class and regional differences of 2 mothers who hook up to look for their missing sons. Ambitious, and a good read, but the author should have picked one of the three themes and stuck to it. I recommend this book (gave it a 7), but it could have been a great book, rather than a good read.

S: SCALZI, John - Fuzzy Nation
---> Audio download read by Wil Wheaton

I was a little reluctant to tackle this one: I really enjoy Scalzi's work, but Little Fuzzy is an old favorite and I wasn't sure I'd like what he did with it. It turns out that I did, but it's sort of like when a book is made into a movie: I may like both versions, even though they may not have all that much in common. Not destined to be one of my favorites by this author (Old Man's War was terrific; Redshirts and The Android's Dream were hilarious) but I appreciate what he was trying to do with the basic material.

Fun. A journalist, and diver trains up and dives the Andrea Doria. This is a very deep wreck, and used to be reachable only for super elite divers. With new adances in equipment and enough money (think Krakauer), you can now dive without lots of experience and training. Well written and thoughful, and looks hard at the why is the blame placed on guides when something inevitably goes wrong.

I read...Forever, Erma by Erma Bombeck. She was a journalist who wrote humorous articles about being a wife, a homemaker, and a mother. The book was a collection of her work. It took me months to finish this book because I would pick it up and only read a few articles at a time. However, I enjoyed her work and am glad to have read the book. She passed away and at the end of the book there are tributes written about her. You could see that she was a well loved person.

I've finished the book "I skyggen av en regnbue" (In the Shadow of a Rainbow) by Robert Franklin Leslie (http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/13636769). It's a true story about a friendship between an indian and a wolf. It's a nice story.

I read Perilous Waters by Sandra Orchard. It was a romance/suspense story set mostly on a cruise to Alaska. It was suspenseful trying to figure out exactly who were the true "bad" people. You don't get to know the real culprits until the very end. It was a fun and quick read.

I read Early Sunday Morning: The Pearl Harbor Diary of Amber Billows by Barry Denenberg. It was part of the Dear America series. I was curious to see if I would like it...I thought it was okay. This book just didn't capture my interest. I guess the part I liked best were the pictures at the end of the book telling true details of what happened on December 7th. I guess in the case of history, I prefer reality to fiction.

and moving on to J with Henry James's The Beast in the Jungle.

I'm just jumping around the alphabet in no particular order and trying to remember to post here.

For P, I read A Mighty Heart by Mariane Pearl about the her experience with the kidnapping (and eventual execution) of her husband, fellow journalist Daniel Pearl. They were in Pakistan, and she stayed pregnant & living with in another woman's home while it was overrun with different government's version of police forces & the Wall Street journal's people, all trying to figure out who kidnapped her husband & how to rescue him.

For K, a wonderful collection of short stories. This was an ARC from the publisher: Women on the Brink by G. Elizabeth Kretchmer. In all the stories, the women are on the brink of something - a recovering drug addict, a single teen mother that doesn't want to be a mother, a retired accountant that becomes a truck driver, etc.

Flash and Bones by Kathy Reichs

Since Bones has been on TV, Reichs books have taken a dive south. Not sure if I will read any more of her books

Too bad. From what I remember of the (early) books, and the little I've seen of the TV show, I preferred the books.

O: OSBORNE, Mary Pope

According to this book, explorer Kit Carson married an Arapaho woman and Adaline was their daughter. This is the story of what happened when Carson left her with some of his relatives in St. Louis, Missouri.

I read Maggie Sefton's...A Killer Stitch. It is the fourth book in her knitting mystery series. I like her characters. This book had a good mystery about a young man who gets murdered...he was a real jerk...especially to women. So, there were many suspects with good reasons to want him dead.
