Complete Thread
The challenge starts Feb. 1, so get those bird-themed books ready! No need to sign up; just start posting qualifying releases in this thread as of Feb. 1st.

NOTE: While I usually make this a wild-release-only challenge, in these pandemic days I'm allowing controlled releases as well.

The annual GBBC - Great Backyard Bird Count - will be held from Feb. 12-15 this year, and this bird-themed release challenge is held for the full month of February in its honor.

You don't have to participate in the bird-count to join the release challenge, but if you're at all interested in birds it's worth a look. The Audubon Society web site describes the count here ( http://www.audubon.org/---/about-great-backyard-bird-count ), but in short: the bird count encourages people around the world to note the different types and numbers of birds they see during this 4-day period, and log the results online; here's the web site for the count itself ( https://www.birdcount.org/ ). It's fun and easy - you can participate just to report that one bird you saw outside your window or on the way to work, or you can keep more careful records throughout that weekend.

This release challenge will run through the month of February. Qualifying books include: books ABOUT birds, with birds on the COVER (this includes publisher-logos in bird form - Puffin, Penguin, etc.), and/or with birds, types of birds, or parts of birds ("beak", "feather", "quill", etc.) in the TITLE, SUB-TITLE, or AUTHOR. Associated words like "fly" or "perch", "egg" or "nest" or "sing" will work, too. If you aren't sure about a word being bird-related, make a convincing argument and I'll let it in. (See last year's thread for examples: https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/565923 .) Embedded words are fine, as long as they're within one title/sub-title word and are in the same language as the book's title.

The release notes should include a reference to the challenge AND a link to the bird-count site. (Once the count's over people can still enjoy browsing the sightings around the world.)

Again, you don't have to participate in the bird-count in order to participate in the challenge, though if you want to do so that'd be cool! (Posting your bird-counts here isn't necessary either, but might be fun, especially if you spot anything unusual.)

Normally, because the count is for wild birds, only wild releases will count for the challenge, but in this COVID year I'm allowing controlled releases as well.

Prizes: I'll give a book or wings-for-a-month to the person with the most qualifying releases, and to one other participant, chosen randomly.

Hi "GoryDetails" I'm in but not playing for prizes. ThankU for hosting this challenge again
🐿😷

I've got books set aside but don't know if I'll feel safe to go out releasing by then. I'm in two high-risk groups so right now I am not doing any releasing and it is driving me crazy.

If I am able to release I won't be playing for prizes though.

Thanks for hosting the Challenge again.

NOTE: While I usually make this a wild-release-only challenge, in these pandemic days I'm allowing controlled releases as well.

Good to know, thanks.

My two that I've saved with pictures of cows on the cover also have chickens. :D

Does "cover" include front, back, and spine?

Sure! And don't forget the publisher logos - quite a few of those are birds.

That’s why I asked: I was looking at a book with a puffin on the cover. :)

Many anthologies list the editor(s) on the cover in place of the authors. Would those editor names work? (Looking at Martin Greenberg at the moment.)

Note: I presume that individual contributors don’t count unless they’re listed on the cover in a way that would cause the book to be catalogued under their names. I often see a list of contributors on the cover but most of the time the “author” slot has the editor name instead.

Or is this all a can of worms that you’d rather not open? Sticking strictly to actual authors _would_ be cleaner. ;)

Absolutely OK to use the editor names where applicable. And if the cover shows author names that would qualify, that's OK too. Always aiming to include more books if there's any reasonable excuse {grin}. [And I'm irked that I didn't think of Martin Greenberg, as I've read so many of his anthologies!]

That gives me some more qualifying books then, especially since you're allowing controlled releases this year. :)

I would have missed him too except that A. Lee Martinez caught my eye which got me thinking of martins. :)

First day of the actual GBBC - and there are fewer birds at my feeders than usual; either they're roaming farther as it's a sunny day, or they're just messing with me!

16. BIRD Watch ( https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/16069507 ), wild release, photo

Released to LFLs, with photos:

19. FROGMOUTH ( https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/16143393 ), LFL release, multiple challenges, photo

My actual GBBC count is not going well; for some reason the birds have not been stopping by my feeders as often as usual. This is easily the lowest count I've had since I've been participating in this. And what do you bet they'll all come back on Tuesday after this count's over? [I could log them regularly regardless of the official GBBC dates, but somehow that just isn't as much fun for me.]

[Last day of the GBBC - though of course folks can continue to log sightings year-round if they want to. (And this challenge continues until the end of February, so keep those bird-themed releases coming.) I think my guess about the weather was right; the first three days of the count were pretty nice, sunny and bright, but today an ice storm was moving in - and lo! all the birds that were nowhere to be seen for the previous three days showed up and raided the feeders heartily!]

20. Where's My Mommy? ( https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/16138127/ ), for the PENGUIN on the cover

I waited a few more days than I'd intended - sorry about that!

Total releases: 80 books, in three countries, by five participants - pretty good for a mid-COVID challenge {rueful grin}. I’m awarding wings to all the participants, and here’s hoping we can all get out and about safely by next year!

Thank you so much for the wings! A nice surprise!
