Great releases, I love them!

I don't know if you've already done this or not, but if you're ever in Hamilton, ON you should be sure to visit the original Tim's! It's two levels and there is a mini-museum about Tim Horton's upstairs (also a statue of Tim Horton outside the restaurant) :)

I haven't been to the original Tim Horton's - but I was able to send a Tim's history with travelers who left it in that restaurant. Didn't know about the statue of Tim!

https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15116542
Released near the sheep enclosure in the small zoo of National Garden in Athens.

My first release of 2019 had a bit of a theme-- beavers. The book I left was called Crazy Canadian Trivia 2; it had a picture of a cartoon beaver on the cover, and I left it at a place called Little Beaver Restaurant. There is a photo, although it's not an especially interesting one.

I released a book this morning; it was called "Girls Who Rocked the World." It was a bit of a play on the word "rocked" because I left it at an arena, during a curling competition (curling being played with rocks). It also had a bit of a real theme though, because it's a book about notable women and the book was released at the Ontario Provincial Curling Championships, on the day of the Women's Final.

There's a picture, but it's not that good.

I released a copy of "In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson" at a Chinese New Year celebration, just a few minutes before the year of the boar actually began. The book is on the low wall to the right of the bridge in the photo.

Great photo. :D

I'll second that - terrific photo!

Thank you both, I'm glad you like it! I love doing release photos but I'm frequently frustrated by them, lol. That one I was trying to do quickly and fairly discreetly because that section of the mall was not open at the time (but you had to walk through it to get to the washrooms). Most people in the area were distracted by the beginning of the lion dance, but there were a number of people around including security guards so I didn't want to look suspicious!

4. Nancy Drew & The Hidden Staircase https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15376514

Today I released "Princess of Egypt: An Egyptian Girl's Diary, 1490 BC" at a local cafe called Anubis Coffee Importing Cafe & Roastery. I released a book called the Secret Countess this evening, at a little Russian/Ukrainian place called Teremok Cafe. I've read that "Teremok" is a reference to an old folk tale and it means "little hideaway." The title woman is a young Russian countess in hiding in the UK after the Russian Revolution/WW1, so I thought the "little hideaway" would be a good place for her to hang out until another reader comes along and finds her!

My husband and I went to visit our newborn nephew on Thursday and we ended up staying in the town where he lives and spending today in the area where my husband grew up! Between Thursday night and Friday afternoon I did 4 releases and all were themed, here they are!

Baby Theme-- "Amelia Bedelia and the Baby" left in a high chair at a Burger King Restaurant (photo): https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/14889546

Jumbo the Elephant Theme-- "Incredible Jumbo" (a historical fiction novel about Jumbo) left at a statue of the elephant himself (photo-- book is small but visible on the stone cairn behind the statue, on the left in the photo): https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15340646

Greek/Sparta Theme-- "Pandora of Athens" released in the small town of Sparta-- I chose this because of the Greek connection of Athens and Sparta, but also because an important character is the book is actually from Sparta although she lives in Athens (there is a photo but it's blurry... sorry!): https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15159776

War/WW1 Theme-- "Ghosts of the First World War" released on a bench at a cenotaph green in a little port town where my husband lived briefly (photo): https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15195944

Good one!

This evening I released a copy of a Canadian classic, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town. It was written by Stephen Leacock, and the titular town is supposedly based on a small town called Orillia where Leacock once lived. I passed through Orillia tonight, and left Sunshine Sketches there. In the book, the town is called Mariposa, so I left the book outside of a downtown business called Mariposa Market-- the market had already closed for the evening when I was there so I had to improvise a little; the book can be seen hanging from the parking meter located up against the wall of the market, it's in the right of the photo.

https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/14855596

Chris and I spent the evening doing some stargazing at Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve, which was (apparently) the first dark sky preserve in the world! There were more stars than we could count, and before we left I released a book there called Number the Stars. The story doesn't relate at all, but I thought the title was appropriate!

(The photo didn't come out well, but the book can be seen at the bottom right of the photo. It's in a big, suspended from the sign's right support)

Theme releases in Tallinn, Estonia with photos.

10. Agatha Christie: Kokkusaamine surmaga (Appoinment with Death)
https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15420759
I left the book at the feet of a wooden bear. Meeting a bear can be dangerous. Well, it is 20 years since a brown bear killed a man in Finland. He was running in the woods.

11. Mika Waltari: Синухе, Египтянин https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15425044
Sinuhe the Egyptian in Russian was left by the entrance of the Russian Culture Center.

12. Iko Maran: Pikk päev (children's picture book in Estonian)
https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15110913
I left this Estonian children's book on the stairs of the Kullo Children's Gallery on Kuninga Street.

13. Eva Stachniak: The Winter Palace https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/14804437
The book was left by the side door of another palace some 300 years older than the Winter Palace in ST Petersburg. The Great Guild Hall is one of the most distinguished public buildings of medieval Tallinn. The Gothic-style building, completed in 1410, was built on what was then the main street, and near the Town Hall.
The Great Guild Hall has housed the Estonian History Museum since 1952.

14. Agatha Christie: The Pale Horse https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15084282
The Pale Horse was released on the Hobusepea (Horsehead) Street.

15. Louis Bayard: The School of Night https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/12372138
The School of Night was left on the windowsill of the Russian School Museum.

16. Anthony Capella: The Food of Love https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/12542175
This book about Italian food was released on the windowsill of an Italian restaurant Restoran Castello.

17. Fannie Flagg: Welcome to the World, Baby Girl!
https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11541832
The book was left by the entrance to the Estonian Health Care Museum.

Tonight I released a research book that I'd been hanging onto for a little while. It was called "Valour at Vimy Ridge: Canadian Heroes of World War I" and I left it at a cenotaph in a nearby town. I chose this location because I researched the WWI men named on that particular cenotaph for the project I was working on, and I know that at least 10% of the WWI men named there (2/20) died in the particular battle that is the subject of the book.

The photo was taken sort of "over the shoulder" of the cenotaph, and it was about 8 PM so there's not a ton of light! The book is in the very centre of the bench. It's in a blue bag.

A couple more themed releases for me:

Guardians of the Louvre ( https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15202591/ ), wild release, photo, themed (released at a museum).

Do Not Pass Go: From the Old Kent Road to Mayfair ( https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15303406/ ), wild release, photo, themed (the book's about Monopoly; released at a board-game cafe).

Do Not Pass Go: From the Old Kent Road to Mayfair ( https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15303406/ ), wild release, photo, themed (the book's about Monopoly; released at a board-game cafe).

That's fun! My nearest games cafe has a book exchange shelf and I left a BC book there once. I thought it was gone the next time I was there, but then on another visit I saw it there again. I know it was gone last time I was in though-- I specifically checked (and took a different book home myself)! No JE from the one I released at the games cafe in my area, but at least it seems to be circulating. I hope you get a catch from yours!

Looks like his works are spilling out of his briefcase? Nice.

Churchill's Cigar ( https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15413768/ ), released outside a cigar store; photo.

On Sunday I released a book called "To Kill a Queen: An Elizabethan Girl's Diary, 1583-1586" at a Dairy Queen restaurant.

The town that I was in was Stratford, Ontario, which kind of tries to be a mini version of Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK. It's home to a large theatre festival with a focus on Shakespeare; there is a statue of Shakespeare; the river running through Stratford, ON is also called the Avon; many businesses and streets have names relating to Elizabethan/Shakespearean England; etc... so I thought the book, with its Elizabethan setting, was a good fit for Stratford in that regard too.

There is a photo but it's not very interesting.

Released in Scarborough:

9 - https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15441539/ Images of America: Scarborough

This afternoon I released a children's book about dinosaurs at a park that has dinosaur-themed playground equipment. The book was Dinosaurs from Head to Tail, and I left it in a protective bag, hanging from the horn of a little dinosaur statue that overlooks the playground area.

https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15353250

I was travelling this weekend and I did five releases. All of them were themed, in a way... a couple are slightly tenuous, but they do have themes. So, here we go:

Moose Theme-- a children's book called Making the Moose Out of Life, left with a photo prop moose at a highway rest stop (it's not the same rest stop moose that I left a book with last year, but it's the same type of moose at the same type of rest stop 200+ km further west on the same highway). It was a small book and I left it tucked into Sgt. Moose's Sam Brown. (photo) https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15450017

Rose/Garden Theme-- This is one of my more tenuous themed releases, but I released a copy of The Secret Garden on a stop in Roseville, Michigan. The flowers in the garden on the cover of this edition are all different coloured roses, and Mary is smelling one of them. (photo--though not a great one) https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15469398

Ballet Theme-- The other kind of tenuous theme... which would not normally be tenuous, but was on this particular day. At the Detroit Institute of Arts, I left a copy of Ballet Shoes sitting on a bench in the room that is normally home to "Dancers" and "Dancers in the Green Room." The problem is that both paintings were, unfortunately, out on loan while I was there! The theme will still make sense to people who know the gallery well, or who are there looking for the ballerinas like I was... but it might be lost on visitors who don't know either the gallery or the specific paintings it was meant to relate to. (photo) https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/14084402

Holocaust Remembrance Theme-- Nothing really went as planned on our trip this weekend, but we ended up stopping at the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan. We knew it would be closed while we were in town (we were only in the Detroit area for Friday evening and Saturday, which also happened to be Passover), but we were in the area and we didn't know when we'd be back, and there was something we were hoping to see located outside on the museum grounds, so we thought we'd try. We were not really able to see what we were looking for, but while we were there I released a copy of Anne Frank Remembered (written by Miep Gies) at some sort of monument located at the back of the parking lot. (photo) https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15371997

Sea Life Theme-- This one was completely unplanned, I just happened to have an extra book with me that fit well with a place I found myself in unexpectedly! Because everything was going wrong on the trip, we ended up killing some time at an outlet mall. This mall happened to be the biggest one in the state, and also happened to be home to the Sea Life Michigan Aquarium. I happened to have a kids book with me called Ocean Animals from Head to Tail, so I left it propped against a fish tank at the aquarium entrance. I stuck around after the release (unusual for me) to take pictures of some of the animals in the fish tank, and actually saw a family take the book-- I don't think I've ever seen one of my books get taken before (not that I can remember right now, anyway). When I left the mall a couple of hours later, the book had been returned, but I saw them leave with it... so I don't know if they changed their minds or read it and re-released it without journalling, or what exactly. Oh well. Hopefully the kids in that family enjoyed it, and hopefully someone else will too! (photo): https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15468982

41. The Game - https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15509476
At the baseball stadium during a game; our team lost. :(

42. The Baseball Adventure of Jackie Mitchell - https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15479683
Next day, same story: our team got trounced, again. Their last home game was Sunday, so that's probably my last baseball-themed release for 2019.

Yesterday I released a copy of How to Train Your Dragon at The Dragon Sports Bar in St. George, Ontario. There was a young boy there at the time and I was hoping he'd find it, but of course he and his father left the restaurant in the opposite direction from where I left the book (I left it in the vestibule at the front, they left via the back door). Oh well, it will be found by someone else at some point, I guess!

Released a book about a Hollywood starlet outside the Chinese Theatre at Hollywood & Highland.

*the book was picked up!

I did two more themed releases this weekend!

The first was kind of a nature theme; I left a book called "Canada in Colours" on a hiking trail in a conservation area. The book is written for young kids and in it the characters explore the colours found in Canada's natural landscape. One page is even about hiking on trails ("pink wild roses bloom along hiking trails").

The second one was a Newfoundland theme. We finally got a chance to try out a pub we've been wanting to go to (we tried to last year but there was a mix up about hours and it was closed). It's a Newfoundland themed place called The Goofie Newfie, and the book I left was called The Present Tense of Prinny Murphy-- a story about a teenage girl growing up in a small village in Newfoundland.

Children's Book with "SUNSHINE" in the upper right-hand front cover corner released with the Children's Sunblock for SSMs...Sunscreen Day.🌞

1. Iris La Bonga and the Boomerzoomer (Sunshine Books, Level 10) by Margaret Mahy

Doctor Who: Who-ology ( https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/15483574/ ), wild release, multiple challenges, photo. Released in a Little Free Library that's in the shape of a TARDIS.

Oh, someone's definitely picking up that one!
