19/02/18; Today is Family Day in a few Canadian provinces, mine being one of them. That pretty much just means that businesses are closed (except for many restaurants), but also a lot of community groups, clubs, etc have family-oriented activities going on today. Chris and I drove out to a small town not far from our city (close enough that their kids go to school here) and checked out one of those family-oriented activities-- an Open House at the Ayr Curling Club.
Visiting the curling club was exciting for me because I'd never actually been in a curling club before. Also, Ayr is a fairly old club for these parts (dating to 1850, which is a little bit funny because that actually makes it about 12 years newer than the club that's actually in our city) and it's where some of my family has curled over the years-- including my grandfather, whom I was very close to as a child. A little Family Day connection, I guess :)
Anyway, the club was very busy today. The parking lot was full and there were a lot of kids trying out the sport. That's promising for me, because while we were there I released a book geared to kids in the foyer. It was called "Ice Hockey and Curling (Winter Olympic Sports)." I thought the location was appropriate as well as the timing, since we're in the middle of another Winter Olympic Games right now! There was also a coincdence that added a little to the release-- they were playing Olympic hockey on the TV in the lounge, lol :)
