2017 Never Judge a Book By Its Cover Release Challenge, 2nd Quarter

Welcome to the challenge!!!

I’m at least the third hostess for this weekly challenge, which has been continuous for many, many years.

GUIDELINES AND RULES:

Each Saturday (or on occasion on Friday) a book cover is posted as the theme for the coming week. The object is to find books with the themed cover for the week and release them within the week. For instance, the week’s theme might be cover with a pen showing on the cover (modern or quill) or the word pen within the title of the book; or the colors yellow and pink showing on the cover; or authors named Christopher.

Sometimes we will have a “Mystery Namer” – someone other than me who will set up the challenge. Just PM me if you would like to be a “Mystery Namer” and let me know which week you would like to do so.

1) Saturday (in US and Canada) is the overlap day when either the previous week's cover can be released or the new cover can be released. FOR EUROPE, Sunday is the overlap day.

2) Both the front and the back of the book are considered “the cover,” so pictures on the back are acceptable.

3) Any kind of release is OK but only catches from wild releases will count.

4) Each person must keep track of their releases each week which must be posted here with a link to the JE. PLEASE DO NOT go back and edit a previous post and add more releases to it, but make a new post for releases of any given week.

5) If you wild release a book and it gets caught then you have a release counted and a catch counted. However, if the person who caught the book releases it and it gets caught again - that's not another catch for you since you didn't do the second release.

6) When you have a cover which could work for 2 consecutive weeks, then you must to decide which week to count it for as a release (remember that it’s only one book and can only be counted once).

7) Anyone is welcome to join this challenge at any time and you can participate as much as you like. You can begin on Week 1 or Week 31 or Week 51, whichever suits you.

IF YOU DON’T WISH TO BE A MYSTERY NAMER, YOU CAN SEND ME SUGGESTIONS FOR BOOK COVERS! I will periodically use them.

April 8 is National Walk to Work Day. Definitely not something I can do given the 35 mile distance I travel by train, but certainly something to promote to those who can. So, our cover should have:

A cover picture showing someone walking

Have a nice weekend.

Ack. I always have trouble with this theme...and I released a book that would have worked two days ago!

Sigh.

(Not an actual complaint: looking for something else right now.)

Any chance you would allow the word "walk" too?

And does it have to be a person walking? I've got one with a pig walking upright...

In REAL LIFE, I would NEVER leave ANY children ANY where alone to play!!!

Actually, this sounds kind of sad to me, but typical for our time. I wouldn't want to miss the experiences and adventures I was able to collect in my childhood because I was not held captive like a prisoner under constant supervision.

Yes, I thought I had the perfect book -Seven Years in Tibet, but a search on Tibet proved that it is not a separate country, as I thought, but a portion of China. Rats. Had to go to the FOL to search for others.

Didn't it used to be a separate country, before China took it over forcibly?

Looks like Tibet has been independent more than once in the past, which leads to this question:

Are you looking for current countries only, or do former countries such as Yugoslavia or the USSR and former country names like Burma qualify?

Hawaii was a kingdom before it became state, and Wikipedia actually refers to both Scotland and Wales as "a country that is part of the United Kingdom", since they were both previously independent...

Regardless of the above, I'm hoping embedded names apply, as in PERUvian, JAPANese, KOREAn, etc.

Just in case, I'm still searching...

Former countries are also fine.

Hawaii and several of the other Pacific island nations are a bit of a 'one off' because most weren't ever accepted countries in their own right, but I'll accept them here as separate countries before they chose to align themselves with us or other countries to protect themselves.

Embedded names are always accepted by me.

Ok, I have a Hawaii book I can use then, thank you.

As always, your challenge = your rules, and your decisions are final, not subject to argument. :)

So...I have some issues with your statement as it applies to Hawaiian history, but that's not really appropriate to discuss here so let's move on.

I thought so, thank you.

I'm happy to bow to your greater knowledge and certainly wouldn't argue your points because I haven't studied in depth, but my sparse reading has suggested that most other countries found the Pacific Islands backward or 'quaint' and though beautiful not economically worth overtaking and then having to rule from afar. The Dutch may be the exception to that rule, since they expanded to many islands all over the world.

Congrats on the new grandchild.

America is a no - it's the continent not the country, no matter what we or others call us. Russia is still in use. USSR used (and may still be, but I din't see if being used any more) was so is acceptable.

Secretariat - I just noticed your response. I did release using America as a country since I remembered this that you wrote a year ago:

"WEEK 18 IS . . .
Secretariat 1 yr ago
Title containing the name of a country (German, Italy, United States, Australia, Greece, etc.). Unlike my March challenge (which allows the names of rivers, lakes, cities, and other places), this is country names only.

Note: The word America is acceptable for the U. S. Let's face it, though it is part of the name of a continent, all US citizens refer to themselves as Americans, and so does everyone else. "

Since I was going by your own words allowing America that I remembered from last year when I released the books, will you allow the releases again this year?

Profile Image
Sure, I'll allow it in this instance. But it's good for all of us to remember that every time I use a theme is different and may have different rules.

Today is Cinco de Mayo, so in celebration of Mexican Independence Day (celebrated in Southern California by imbibing vast amounts of Magueritas), your cover should have one of the colors of the flag of Mexico: Red, White, or Green.

Have a nice weekend (when the hangover wears off).

Hmmm... Were you anticipating being too incapacitated so early in the morning that you wouldn't be able to post on Saturday, Sec?

Have a great day!!!

Only hoping to sleep in because I haven't been sleeping well lately and was hoping tomorrow would be better and didn't want the pressure of having to get up before 9:00 if I was sleeping well. Alcohol is one of my vast number of allergies, so I don't ever drink it (though back in ancient times before I knew that was the problem I loved a good marguerita).

Good luck: by 9 am on Saturday and Sunday the leaf blowers in my neighborhood are usually going full blast. :(

I have extreme sensitivities to ALL things chemical, which also keeps me from enjoying a "good" margarita, so I opt for celebrating with homemade GREEN GUACAMOLE!!! : D Couldn't even do that this year, as I "celebrated" with a 100+ degree fever instead, which just broke last night. Just as well...the DUI Task Force is out in full force this weekend and is still taking inebriated party goers off the roads!!! THANK YOU TO THE MEN AND WOMEN IN BLUE!!! Say, that might be a future theme for you, Secretariat!!! : ) Hope you manage to get some "therapeutic" vs "fitful" ZZZzzzzz's to help you stay well!!! ; ) XO
