2017 Science Fiction Release Challenge: 1-28 February 2017

Last year's Science Fiction Release Challenge went well, so I've decided to run it again this year.

Jules Verne is considered, (as are H.G. Wells and Hugo Gernsback by some sources), to be the "Father of Science Fiction". Verne's birthday was 8 February 1828, so the challenge is to release as many science fiction books from 1 to 28 February 2017 inclusive, your local time.

I should have posted this earlier so I'm sorry for the short notice, but I hope everyone has time to locate some suitable books to release.

On the weekend after the challenge ends (4/5 March 2017) I will award prizes of Wings for a Month for the person with the most releases, and two other participants (apart from the person with the most releases) selected at random.

What are the rules?

1. Any Science Fiction themed book (see below) released in the month of February 2017 your local time can be included. Wild and controlled releases allowed.

2. For this challenge a Science Fiction book is defined as any book you would find on the Science Fiction shelves in a book store. If you are not sure what genre a book belongs in, going to amazon.com/.co.uk/.com.au, barnesandnoble.com or kobo.com and seeing what genre it is classified as there might help. Sites such as these often categorise books in more than one genre, but as long as one of them is science fiction the book is acceptable.

NOTE: Non-fiction books about science fiction authors, science fiction topics or sub-categories, or the science fiction genre in general are also allowed.

3. Releases that fit multiple release challenges are welcome.

4. After making your releases, record them here with your running total of releases and a link to your journal entry. Please mention in your release notes that the book was released as part of this challenge.

5. Report catches (and new members resulting from this challenge). A link to the journal entry would also be appreciated. Please include in your post here your running total of any catches.

6. Hope you all have fun, and I look forward to seeing what books people are reading and releasing. I found some extremely interesting books to read after seeing what books other people released and what they said about the books.

EXCITING NEWS, Davros-10!!! I managed to find a few during the past year to set aside for this Challenge, although I recently sent one off in a Bookring before I realized it. At any rate, please count me in...and THANK YOU for hosting again!!! : )

Excellent! Now to go through my TBR shelves for another sort-for-challenges pass {wry grin}.

The challenge for me will be finding books that are both physical (not e-books or audio) and _not_ PC or TBR. :)

For most Challenges, you can release audiobooks.

Yes, but most of my SF audio is of the downloaded variety. Very few of the physical audiobooks I have are SF...or fantasy for that matter. The ones I do have tend to fall into one of those two categories above: PC or TBR.

Plus..I am generally reluctant to wild release audiobooks, so that would limit me to controlled releases, and I try not to inflict SF on someone unless I know they read the stuff. (I do, definitely, but I know a lot of people don't.)

I don't need wings.

Thanks for running this Challenge again.

Count me in :) I have been working on reading down some of the older TBR science fiction books on my mt. TBR.

The challenge is now open, so let's have some fun with it.

Happy releasing everyone!

Heinlein has been a favourite of mine since I read Stranger In A Strange Land in my last year of high school and then actively read through all of his books over the next couple of years. I still have my I Grok Spock badge somewhere in the boxes of mementos in the cupboard.

Was so excited you were hosting again this year, but have still not located the little box of Sci-Fi I set aside. Found this one in another box of unregistered books I purchased from Friends of the Library, and managed to get it registered and released in the 11th hour (literally) on the last day of your challenge. They say "Third Time's A Charm", so I hope to have more for next year. I've already registered a few in the Young Adult Category that I found in the Friends of the Library box. ; )

The Library categorized this as Sci-Fi. Not certain I would. Also never thought of Star Trek and the like as Sci-Fi, and yet the Library also labels them that way. Still trying to grasp an accurate definition of Sci-Fi vs Fantasy, so I'll be able to pick up some better books for next year's challenge. Friends of the Library had a 4 for $.1 paperback bin FULL of Star Trek Books they just rid their shelves of. ; ) I DO have a copy of A Wrinkle In Time SOME where that I hope to find to release next year. ; )

Don't worry about it bookworminusall. I only managed the one release myself:

#1 http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13897245 A Floating City

But it is a book by Jules Verne himself...

Sorry this is later than I thought. I won't go into it but things have been really hectic the last couple of months.

Wings for a month have been gifted to:

For the most releases (24) nimrodiel

And two other releasers picked at random: GoryDetails and hyphen8.

As it's Saturday I'm not sure how quickly the order will be acted on, but hopefully you should receive your wings, or have your existing wings extended, within a couple of days.

Thank you to everyone who participated, and I'll see you again next year.

I had fun with this challenge. Hopefully next year I will have more science fiction rather than fantasy from the science fiction and fantasy genre grouping.

I have not been very active in the last year or two but hope to get back into the swing of things as other issues settle down in 2018.

I'm even organising myself better, and have started the 2018 thread for this challenge already: http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/548135

Hope to see some interesting books and your reviews of them in February!

In the meantime, hope everyone has a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.
