2017 Asian Zodiac / Year of the Rooster Challenge: January 14 - February 10

(Note: this is a new challenge, so I'm still tweaking the specifics: please double-check the rules below before you start releasing.)

For 2017, Chinese (Lunar) New Year falls on January 28 (the same date is also celebrated by Korea and some other Asian countries, and a number of countries follow the same zodiac cycle).

How about a challenge built around 2017's Asian zodiac animal, the rooster? I originally wanted this to run for two weeks before and after the actual New Year date, and after some waffling, I've gone back to that.

This challenge will run from January 14 to February 10 wherever you are.

Any type of release accepted.

No prizes, probably: this is just for fun.

*************************************************************
Multi-challenge releases are encouraged: for February 2017, this will overlap with GoryDetails's Great Backyard Bird Count challenge. You may wish to save your BIRD books until then.

Books with "New Year" in the title can also be counted for GoryDetails's New Year/self-improvement challenge: http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/537351
*************************************************************

Qualifying books should have a picture of a chicken (rooster, hen, chick) or one of these words in the title or author's name (if releasing books in another language, the word should translate into something chicken-related):

bantam
banty
capon
chanticleer
chick
chicken
chook
cock
cockerel
hen
leghorn
pullet
rooster

Chicken breeds not listed above are ok, but the book's title must include the full name of the breed: "black shumen" is ok, but just "black" is not. If you're using a breed name, be sure to point it out in your post.

A few actions:

brood
cackle
cheep
crow
hatch
lay
nest
peck
peep
roost

Also acceptable:

12
animal
astrology
cycle
lunar
moon
new
sign
symbol
twelve
xii
year
zodiac

Late addition suggested by GoryDetails:

Any book with the number of a Year of the Rooster in the title will work:
1897, 1909, 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029, etc. You can extend the list out in either direction with multiples of 12 or use a calculator like this one: https://www.travelchinaguide.com/---/zodiac - I recommend using a mid-year date to avoid the ambiguity caused by the moveable date of the lunar New Year. (Hint: 1861 was a Rooster year.)

Embedded words are ok (because I don't want to make this *too* hard, and because I think it's fun to look for them). If you prefer not to use embedded words, that's fine too.

Terms should relate to LIVE birds, so no cooking terms (broiler, fryer, roaster) or chicken parts (wing, thigh, drumstick, gizzard).

If you think of another word that should be on the list, go ahead and ask.

Since I plan to participate in GoryDetails's Great Backyard Bird Count Challenge, I will join in, but will probably not release books that fit her Challenge too until February.

Yeah, that may be an issue (I only figured out the overlap after I'd put up the original dates)...but I wanted the challenge to cover parts of both months since (depending on the year) the date of the lunar new year can move around quite a bit in January & February.

Went back to my original dates but added some non-bird words to hopefully lessen the conflict with Gory's Backyard Bird Count Challenge - I *do not* want to take away from anyone else's challenge! The rooster is the only bird in the zodiac, so it should work out better if I do a similar challenge for 2018 (year of the dog).
Profile Image
Maybe that will help.
Profile Image
Did you change the dates again? I had Jan 28 to Feb 28 written down.

Yes, sorry. I thought about sending you a PM since you're the only one who's expressed any interest..

I originally changed the dates because of the conflict with Gory's challenge, but I added some non-bird words so hopefully that will work better with my original dates.

I promise not to change the dates again unless I chicken(!) out and decide not to do this one at all.

Don't cancel. Maybe others will join in later. And adding other words does help.

While celebrating New Year's Eve trying to stay calm amidst a neighborhood full of noise by updating my BC Bookshelf and adding links, I just noticed this very creative New Challenge of yours, hyphen8. ; ) Sounds interesting and I'm going to see what books I may have that fit. For some added "non-bird" Asian Zodiac related words, you could always add...holiday, culture, Buddha, Buddhism, tradition, lantern, festival, festivities, astronomy, astrology, calendar, date, day, month, season, birth, age, future, life, relationship, earth, moon, waxing, waning, crescent, quarter, half, full, eclipse, phase, China, Korea, Vietnam, Burma, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, and the Philippines.

Actually, the country names might conflict with the "Oh, the Places We Can Go" Challenge that Secretariat holds in March, but some of the others may work. ; )
Profile Image
Thank you: I added astrology to the list.
Profile Image
I'm in - not least because I just happen to have some books themed on the Eastern Zodiac! [Side note: books with "new year" in the title would qualify for my January new-year/self-improvement challenge too.]

I do like having challenges that overlap months, even when it makes my ordering-of-the-challenge-stacks trickier {wry grin}!

Just trying to keep you on your toes. :p
Profile Image
...books with appropriate words in the author name will count too.

(Elizabeth Moon, that is.)
Profile Image
And front, back, and spine of book. I want this to be interesting and maybe a little challenging, but not impossible. :)

So BANTAM books with the little picture of the rooster will work. (It's always nice - but not required - if you're able to include an image of whatever picture you're using in your journal entry.)

Egg? Nest?

Ok, I'll add nest. I thought about egg before but I really want the bird, post-hatching.

But, that said, I'll accept hatch. ;)

Egg might work for GoryDetails's February Bird Count challenge though: you'd have to ask Gory.

A YEAR of Pies: A Seasonal Tour of Home Baked Pies by Ashley English
https://www.amazon.com/---/1454702869

It is such a lovely Cookbook though...not just about sweets!...that I just had to share it with you all. Among SEVeral savory selections...there's a Spinach, Potato, and Cheese Pie made with a phyllo dough that had me quite intrigued, and I MUST get to the local grocer that has the fabulous blackberries on sale until this coming Tuesday, as I am dying to try the Blackberry Sonker recipe I did copy down...oh, and there was a Figgy Pudding Pie that paired the fresh figs with a delicious sounding custard that has me seriously considering planting a fig tree. Such a lot of work, though...and they have two harvest seasons here, but 3-4 years until they produce a crop. Perhaps I'll just wait for them to appear at the local fruit stands and farmer's markets. ; )

I don't know about here, but that wouldn't work in any of my Challenges: only books registered with BookCrossing, with a BCID, can be posted in my threads, and only posted after the release note is actually done.

Sounds yummy, but solittletime is correct. Any kind of release is ok IF it's a BC book. Since we're not allowed to register library books (I'm sure the library would not approve - unless it's a Little Free Library), they don't count for release challenges.

If this was a reading challenge, that would be different.

Also, if it was a registered book that you donated to the library, that would work. But an actual library book that you borrowed and returned doesn't count, sorry.

I guess solittletime missed this part:

Sounds yummy

It was more about SHARING a "DELICIOUS" book...and perhaps offering a release idea for a for someone else, as well...than being an actual release for your challenge, hyphen8. ; ) I did finally find a couple in one of my "Challenge" stacks purchased from Friends of the Library quite a while back that will be more than appropriate, so once I have them registered and released, I'll post them here. ; )

I've got some Chicken Soup books that I'm saving for the same reason. But... I used to save them for the end of Gory's Bird Challenge, so they'd overlap with the beginning of the Wine & Food Challenge.

And now I've got to release them at the beginning of Gory's Bird Challenge so they'll overlap with the end of the Asian Zodiac Challenge. This Release-Challenge-Life is really confusing! : )

(Maye I'll release half at the beginning and half at the end so I can hit all three Challenges.)

Sorry to make your life complicated. For what it's worth, the rooster is the only bird in the Asian zodiac. 2018 will be a different animal, with some different words, and no conflict with Gory's challenge.

For those of you who like to plan ahead, Chinese New Year 2018 will be on February 16, so the challenge will probably run from February 2 to March 1.

2018 will be the year of the dog, so the word list will be a bit different, but it should be quite a bit easier than chickens. :)

These words will still apply:

12
animal
astrology
cycle
lunar
moon
new
sign
symbol
twelve
xii
year
zodiac

Also, the publisher Knopf uses a borzoi (Russian wolfhound) as its colophon, :)
