2016 Never Judge a Book By Its Cover Release Challenge, Fourth Quarter

Welcome to the challenge!!!

I’m at least the third hostess for this weekly challenge, which has been continuous for many, many years.

GUIDELINES AND RULES:

Each Saturday (or on occasion on Friday) a book cover is posted as the theme for the coming week. The object is to find books with the themed cover for the week and release them within the week. For instance, the week’s theme might be cover with a pen showing on the cover (modern or quill) or the word pen within the title of the book; or the colors yellow and pink showing on the cover; or authors named Christopher.

Sometimes we will have a “Mystery Namer” – someone other than me who will set up the challenge. Just PM me if you would like to be a “Mystery Namer” and let me know which week you would like to do so.

1) Saturday (in US and Canada) is the overlap day when either the previous week's cover can be released or the new cover can be released. FOR EUROPE, Sunday is the overlap day.

2) Both the front and the back of the book are considered “the cover,” so pictures on the back are acceptable.

3) Any kind of release is OK but only catches from wild releases will count.

4) Each person must keep track of their releases each week which must be posted here with a link to the JE. PLEASE DO NOT go back and edit a previous post and add more releases to it, but make a new post for releases of any given week.

5) If you wild release a book and it gets caught then you have a release counted and a catch counted. However, if the person who caught the book releases it and it gets caught again - that's not another catch for you since you didn't do the second release.

6) When you have a cover which could work for 2 consecutive weeks, then you must to decide which week to count it for as a release (remember that it’s only one book and can only be counted once).

7) Anyone is welcome to join this challenge at any time and you can participate as much as you like. You can begin on Week 1 or Week 31 or Week 51, whichever suits you.

IF YOU DON’T WISH TO BE A MYSTERY NAMER, YOU CAN SEND ME SUGGESTIONS FOR BOOK COVERS! I will periodically use them.

All about authors. Our cover should show an author publishing under a nickname (Tony/Anthony, Chris/Christopher, Rick or Rich/Richard, etc.). You may need to do a little detective work if you don't know much about the author. I thought one of the books I had was an author publishing under a nickname, but when I looked at the copyright for the book it was obvious that the name was a pseudonym instead. For purposes of this challenge, if the copyright shown is a company or trust without the author's name (or if there is no copyright information), you may assume that the nickname given for the author is, indeed, a nickname. If the book doesn't give you the information you need, you don't need to search further via the internet or other sources. I hope all of this is clear. I'll be back to check for questions.

Have a great weekend.

I guess I'm just a bit confused. Does this mean that I can use any Steve, Larry, Betsy, or Vickie and assume it is a nickname for Steven, Lawrence, Elizabeth, or Victoria, without looking them up online to be sure? I've got books that are copyright by Steve, Larry, Betsy, and Vickie, but if I don't look them up I don't really know if those are nicknames or their given names. Thanks.

ETA - Actually the few I tried to look up didn't tell me in the author bio on Wikipedia or elsewhere if they were nicknames or not.

Also ETA: I don't know if you'll allow this one, even though Tom *is* a nickname. http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/14187754/

Well, that's how I read it as well: If you want to fool yourself, just do not look anything up and pretend you might be right. If you want to do it right and accept a more challenging challenge, look them up and find that most won't match. It's your choice.

ETA - Actually the few I tried to look up didn't tell me in the author bio on Wikipedia or elsewhere if they were nicknames or not.

Such notes do exist, however. So if there is no mentioning of a "real" name, the one used for the article most certainly is the real one.

Actually I checked a number of books from my AVL and found one who should match the theme well and whose books should be not too difficult to obtain: Dan Brown. Quoting Wikipedia:
Daniel Gerhard "Dan" Brown (born June 22, 1964) is an American author of thriller fiction (...)

Another one I found was Geno (Genoveva) Hartlaub, a rather unknown german author I stock one book of. I haven't checked authors I to Z yet and possibly won't do ;)

My two releases had the Nick Name on the cover, but when checking the copyright page it had the full name.

That's often the case and makes it easy to tell that they are using the nickname to publish. Since copyright law is one of the forms of law which I work in I can tell you that most authors, video producers, etc. put their copyrights in their full given names, though they often publish using the nicknames or corporate names.

This is not what I have found on the books I have: my Mitch Albom [Mitchell David "Mitch" Albom] book is copyright by Mitch Albom, my Cokie Roberts and Steve Roberts [Mary Martha Corinne Morrison Claiborne Roberts] and [Steven V. Roberts] book is copyright by Cokie Roberts and Steve Roberts, my Walt Morey [Walter "Walt" Morey] book is copyright by Walt Morey, my Dave Barry [David McAlister "Dave" Barry] book is copyright by Dave Barry, my Tom Clancy [Thomas Leo Clancy, Jr.] book (one he actually wrote) is copyright by Tom Clancy, my Maggie Shayne [Margaret Benson] book is copyright by Maggie Shayne, a Bill O'Reilly [William James "Bill" O'Reilly Jr.] book is copyright Bill O'Reilly, my Tony Dungy [Anthony Kevin Dungy] book is copyright by Tony Dungy, and an Art Buchwald [Arthur "Art" Buchwald] book is copyright by Art Buchwald.

But that's okay, as obviously I found some that work by researching online. : )

Out of a total of twenty book that I found, only one had the copyright in the given name: Chris Crowley was copyright as Christopher Crowley.

No, won't allow that one. The challenge is about the Author, not the Title.

Actually, the cover image for the one for this BCID is not like the physical copy of it, which actually shows the side of Enzo's (dog character) head, but I haven't been able to upload a pic of it to the Journal Entry as yet, so I'm trying to find a link online for you.

Hope you have a nice weekend, as well!!! ; )

Edited to add link that shows cover of this copy...

P.S. Must be my lucky day, as I managed to get this image uploaded into my JE! : )
Profile Image
Yes, that's sufficient. BTW, you actually wouldn't have needed to find the correct link because I read that book with that cover and remembered it. I appreciate that you went to all the trouble, though.

I had intended to release it for No Spine Art, but since I've found lots of those and no profiles, I'll change this, if you accept it.

Oops. BOOKWORM, you should probably edit your forum post so the link ends this way (edited for a little more clarity):

Remembrance Day is November 11. Our cover should have:

A picture of a WWI soldier (must be WWI) or any of the following words "World War I," "WWI," "First World War," "Remember," or "Remembrance." You may also release any book which is about the First World War, but where the title does not meet any of the above criteria.

A thank you to my RL book club which chose "Goodbye to All That" for our November read, which I just realized has a picture of the author in his WWI uniform on the cover. The challenge for me will be in reading it in a week while I'm leading a book group on another book that I'm only half way through, along with everything else I have to do next week. . . . and so it goes.

Both books have pictures of soldiers in uniform

These books are perfect for this week's challenge.

Question--I have several mysteries by Dorothy L. Sayers featuring Lord Peter Wimsey who is a veteran of World War I. Apparently, his military service affected him strongly and those who care about him are very concerned. Would these books be acceptable?

I actually have a book already that I can release. I was hoping to release it this week because there is picture on the cover of a woman's face in profile, but the book is about a couple and the husband does get called to fight in World War I.

Unless the Lord Peter Wimsey books take place during WWI, then no. Any book chosen should have some (hopefully, large) portion of it contained within WWI so that the reader sees the day-to-day effects on the character(s).

I don't know if I'll have much luck finding anything for this week. I don't have any, but tried to search for World War I books on Amazon. In addition to the ones that probably were WWI, it gave me a lot of WWII and Star Wars and Dragonlance and World War Z, an Oral History of the Zombie Wars, and pretty much everything else. Nothing that looked familiar though. : (

This is often called "The Great War" and a search with that term was better for me, though most of the books were non-fiction. R.F. Delderfield wrote several books set in that period and Mark Halprin has one published in 2005 and, of course, there's Hemingway's "A Farwell to Arms" and "All Quiet on the Western Front." I'm afraid this one may be one of those real "challenge" weeks for everyone.

Thanks. I'll search again with that term.
