I have a meeting early tomorrow morning, so you're getting this week's theme early, which may be a help (or not) because it will be a real Challenge:

Picture of a desert scene, plant, bird, or animal found in the desert (i.e., aloe plant, saguaro, barrel cactus, gila monster, roadrunner, coyote, etc.).

The desert scene does not need to be a southwestern U.S. desert scene. Any desert will do - Africa, Australia, China, etc.

Happy hunting.

1. Baby Coyote Counts - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/14148642
Coyote, sand, cactus.

I felt very lucky to have found this one at the thrift shop! :)

I didn't mean to suggest that the desert had to be a southwestern desert. Since I'd lived in a southwestern desert for 10 years, that was just the easy one to remember the animals from. With Africa and Australia the animals are perhaps more numerous or more easily found for the challenge.

Um, terrestrial only, or would Martian deserts count?

hyphen8, are you kidding? Post a pic of sand and it qualifies. Sec is not usually to picky about details but people like ekorren and now your question just piss me off. The instructions are not difficult. Interpret and adapt. Release. If it's too difficult to understand, pass for the week. I know I'll get crap for this post, but I am SO SICK of everyone being stupid. Stop it!

Sometimes I get a little tired of the questions, too, because I wonder if they've really read the post. Then, again, different minds see things completely differently and often the questions bring up issues I'd not considered or covered. Answering the questions is just part of the job I took on. I definitely appreciate your support, though.

I am sorry for my rant, Sec, and thank you.

hyphen8, are you kidding?

I'm sorry if I annoyed anyone with my question.

It just so happened that when I looked at the books I had in hand, all the desert-ish books I found seemed to be Mars. Generally Sec does mean only human/terrestrial, so I figured it was better to ask first rather than releasing something and having to retract it because it didn't qualify.

I got lucky and found a couple of books at the thrift shop that would qualify instead, so it wasn't a big deal to me either way...and I always accept Sec's interpretation since it's her challenge.

Um, terrestrial only, or would Martian deserts count?

I think it's a reasonable question and one I hadn't considered. Terrestrial only this time.

Thank you Secretariat for your answer. I do read the posts, but apparently I don't always interpret them the same way you do. Since it's your challenge, your interpretAtion is by definition the correct one and I do try to follow your instructions.

I definitely appreciate your work on this challenge. I don't want to cause trouble so I guess it's better if I don't ask any more questions.

Please continue to ask any questions when you need clarification. Sometimes my challenges are clear to me because I know what I have in mind, but they're not clear to others. Also, as said, people see things in various different ways and make suggestions, like yours, that I hadn't considered. Asking questions isn't causing trouble, it's just requesting clarification. Please continue to do so.

and my fellow bookcrossers. I am extremely sorry for taking out my frustration of not being able to BX the way I used to on you. I was very hurt that not one of my "friends" HERE acknowledged my 2 yr. absence or my return back to this place. Thus, my anger over silly questions. I will control my tongue in the future.

I am sorry for not noticing your absence and now your return. I guess there are so many of us here participating in challenges and other aspects of Bookcrossing that we don't always clue in when someone is absent. However, I am very glad that you are back here again. Please be kind to yourself and accept these (((hugs))).

Spazcat, thank you for your apology, and yes, I forgive you.

I was very hurt that not one of my "friends" HERE acknowledged my 2 yr. absence or my return back to this place.

I'm sorry you feel that way - I didn't realize you'd been gone, but it's good that you're able to be back, at whatever level of activity you can manage.

I am extremely sorry for taking out my frustration of not being able to BX the way I used to on you.

I know apologies can be difficult, and I appreciate yours.

Your remarks were hurtful enough to make me consider dropping out of this challenge entirely...but between your apology and Secretariat's response, I feel a bit better about sticking around.

I can get annoyed too - at questions/comments that seem particularly nitpicky - but I try not get too worked up about it. Challenges are supposed to be fun, after all.

Sometimes I have to just chalk it up to a particular individual's personality and try not to read that person's posts (well, as long as it isn't a challenge I'm running). If it helps, feel free to ignore me in the future. :s

I'd noticed your absence from my challenges, spazcat, but people come and go in my challenges all the time. One time it fits their interest/schedules, the next it doesn't. I do sometimes worry when I notice that people are no longer doing BC because it may be more than simple computer issues or busy schedules. I have on occasion sent PMs to check on their welfare. In your case I assumed you were just using your time on other challenges than mine. My assumption was wrong and I'm sorry I didn't check to make sure that was the case.

I was missing for over 2 months and on one noticed :( Oh well, life goes on. Anyhoo, I am glad to see you back! Stay well and enjoy the challenge!

Hi
I rarely post anything except for the links to the books I have released.
But I do find it interesting when people ask questions, as we all do have a different way of seeing things. It has shown me that things that I thought were obvious, are not necessarily so and the reverse is also true.
I love this challenge so have an interest in it continuing as it is.

Personally, I've always felt I was being respectful to ask the Challenge-runner if a book fits what they want, if it wasn't clear to me. Sometimes when I ask, Secretariat or another host will agree with me, but sometimes they will say that wasn't what I had in mind, and I'll put the book aside.

When I host my own Challenges, I'd rather have someone ask than have to tell them afterwards that a book they have already released doesn't count.

But, again, it's a matter of preference and personality. I felt it was a mark of respect to ask. And I sincerely hope that any Challenge-runner who doesn't want me to ask questions will let me know.

I'm going to need a little help. I'm going on vacation on August 31 (not my idea of an ideal time to go to the desert, nonetheless, I promised). I know from experience that I tend to forget what day it is and not log in to give you your challenge.

I have challenge ideas for Sept. 3 and 10, but need someone to be the mystery namer. You can certainly choose your own challenge ideas if you prefer. However, I need someone (or someones) to take over the duty on those two Saturdays. Any takers?

Just PM me with your challenge topics, and I'll make certain they are announced! We'll try and cool it down a bit for your visit, and keep the dust storms at bay. ; )

My pleasure!!! ; ) I'll check for your PM, and hopefully you'll be able to enjoy your vacation a bit more without the extra duty for a couple of weeks. : ) Managed to cool things down to 96 for a high today...unusual for this time of year, when normal would've been 104 today. I'm hoping that's a good "sign". ; ) Happy trails and safe travels to you!!! : )

As tabby-cat-owner reminded me, Wednesday was the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service in this country, which is taxed with preserving the incredible natural beauty to be found in so many places in this country.

Your challenge this week is to find pictures showing natural beauty on your cover. I leave it to YOU to decide whether it fits that criteria. There are hundreds of national parks in this country and they are incredibly diverse. Snow and glaciers, deserts, forests, water, oceans, rain forests, volcanoes, hot springs, animals of every imaginable kind, rare plants and flowers, etc. Your cover does NOT have to show natural beauty from the U.S. Natural beauty is everywhere and in the eye of the beholder.

Happy hunting.

I just realized that I forgot to post week 33. Well, actually, I didn't forget to post at that moment, rather already had the data ready for copy&paste, but was really angry after reading some specific posts here so I spontaneously closed the window to keep myself from replying in anger. And then I obviously forgot that I hadn't actually posted...

Excerpt from my Journal Entry...

While not in the Zelandonii Territory of Prehistoric Europe during the Ice Age, the cover art of this book reminded me of the Cliff Dwelling Ruins at Montezuma Castle National Monument http://www.arizonaruins.com/---/montezuma_castle.html here in Arizona, where fire restrictions were effect as the National Park celebrated 100 years this year. Such a great place to visit, although I haven't been there in years.

I think you mean week 36.

:)

I think so, too. ; ) A perfect choice for Week 36, and this book's Foreword was written by Celine Dion, who is a Celebrity Paton for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. She just performed a moving song given to her by Pink entitled "Recovering" on the Stand Up To Cancer television special last night. http://www.people.com/---/celine-dion-stand-up-to-cancer-performance
