KarmelK's Celebrate the Irish Challenge

I got in touch with KarmelK a few days back, and sadly she's not planning on hosting the Celebrate the Irish Challenge this year. (She does have her hands well and truly full). She did say, however, to continue with the challenge. I'm figuring the best thing to do is to borrow her rules from previous years.

So, KarmelK's rules were :
Books about Ireland, written by or about Irish people or descendants of the Irish in any country. Books that are primarily Green, White, or Gold/Orange in colour or have those colour words in the title, subtitle, or the authors name.
Any Irish place name or items unique to ireland (shamrock, banshee, leprechaun, etc.) in the title or authors name. I'm liberal on rule enforcement.
Any kind of release works.
Starting at 00:00 on the 1st of March and finishing at 23:59 on the 31st of March (your time).
One rule of my own : if KarmelK calls in at any point, her word automatically becomes law ;)

The Celebrate the Irish Challenge was the only one I took part in every year, so I'm going to give it a rattle once again. Anyone else interested ?

Edit : This may come in slightly useful, for the 'Writers of Irish Descent' option.

RE: None ?

Didn't you trounce us all last year !?!

Never fear, I'm sure SLT will come up with _something_. :D

I'll give this a shot too, although I'm not the least bit Irish and have never been there.

No personal Irishness is required to play ;)

Well,

I did just find two books in my Oh, the Places We Can Go Release Challenge pile.

And I forgot that green or white or gold/orange covers count too. I was thinking they had to be about Ireland. I'll keep looking. : )

I will remind her. We have been busy sorting out our Dad's house in order to sell it since he has moved to a retirement place now. Starrdust lives near him and I am further away, so she has the lion's share of work and not much time for BookCrossing lately.

Yes, cluricaune . . . I'm in for this one as well. One of my favourite release challenges! I haven't done much releasing over the past year or so but I'm sure I can find a couple of books related to Ireland on my bookshelves. Thanks for taking this on, on behalf of KarmelK
Profile Image

I'll join.

I've got Irish blood from my Dad's mother's father who came from Kilkenny.

Actually, the maiden name got shortened to Donovan when we landed here as indentured servants in the 1700's. According to family lore, we got tossed out of Ireland for being horse thieves.

No Maeve Binchy books in the availables, so I guess I'll need to read one first.

I want to thank cluricaune for keeping this going. My life is now taking a big change and it is comforting to see things continue even when one can only watch.
My husband (Bob) of 36 years passed away last week (3/3). He had been recovering well from open heart surgery and weird complications (an inner ear crisis that took his hearing, peripheral vision, and gave him constant veritigo, which caused contant vomitting). But that all gradually corrected itself. He was in hospital the whole month of January, and then came home and slowly recovered. He was passing all the PT and OT evaluations. He was getting stronger. He fixed my headlight, changed my oil, and helped my sister put together her exercised machine in the two days before he died. I can only say it was a profound shock to find him laying on the floor that Thursday with Jack the dog whining beside him. Two young EMT's who were friends of my sons worked on him for 40 minutes. But it was obvious he had shook this mortal coil and was soaring to his Lord.
I'm devastated, but I know he was ready and wanting to unite with God and all those waiting in Eternity. We don't know what caused his death, the officials put heart condition. But he had diabetes and was on dialysis and had a recently discovered lesion on his brain. He also suffered greatly each night from restless leg that compelled him to move while the PD machine he used every night kept him tethered to the room.
Everyone who knew him said the same things. Always a smile, always a joke, had great stories but listened to yours, his hands were magic on cars, homes, and hugs. His grandkids adored Grampa Bob and his 6 children were in love with him despite his many annoying habits. He was my life. Please pray for his soul and pray for me and the family.
Profile Image
It sounds like he was a truly wonderful man. You are in my thoughts.

Still searching for some appropriate books to release for this Challenge. In the meantime, here's an Irish Prayer...or three. ; )

May God give you...

For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.

In Time of Sorrow...

May you see God's light on the path ahead
When the road you walk is dark.
May you always hear,
Even in your hour of sorrow,
The gentle singing of the lark.
When times are hard may hardness
Never turn your heart to stone,
May you always remember
when the shadows fall—
You do not walk alone.

Remembered Joy...

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free!
I follow the plan God laid for me.
I saw His face, I heard His call,
I took His hand and left it all...
I could not stay another day,
To love, to laugh, to work or play;
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
And if my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss...
Ah yes, these things I, too, shall miss.
My life's been full, I've savoured much:
Good times, good friends, a loved-one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief—
Don't shorten yours with undue grief.
Be not burdened with tears of sorrow,
Enjoy the sunshine of the morrow.

Thank you cluricaune for helping out with this challenge! Also, I should mention that I'm currently reading Call My Brother Back (Michael McLaverty) in e-book format, thanks to you posting your release here..

Fantastic ! I hope you enjoy it. It's a really good book that one. (I've never yet made it to Rathlin, but they have a puffin colony that's very well spoken of. I'd be very tempted to go and see that at some point). A young Seamus Heaney did a teaching practice at the school in Belfast where McLaverty was headmaster. I am reliably informed by that Heaney got a lot of very good advice from McLaverty.

I hope to see you all again next year ?

I got word of my first catch this morning. "Gulliver's Travels" has left Armagh and is now in Hungary - I find it kind of appropriate that it's made a big trip. It's also brought a new member to BookCrossing.
