Mike's Memorial Release Challenge

Hi all

Starting a wee memorial release challenge for my nephew Mike, who sadly passed away recently. We've been clearing his flat and I've taken some of his books to read and release (including a bookcrossing one that I'd given him), and I thought it would be nice idea to add to this. I have some planned releases in the summer that I'll link to this so I think I'll run it for the rest of the year, if anyone else would like to join in, please do!

Mike was 33 years old and was a lifelong booklover. He left school at 16 and wasn't perhaps a bloke you'd expect to be particularly 'bookish', but he loved books... Hunter S Thompson was probably his favourite author, so anything by him, Chuck Palianuk, any 'gonzo' style writing... travel books, anything to do with motorbikes, the outdoors, photography, trees (he had been training to become a tree surgeon), food and drink (he worked as a butcher and was a great chef), cats, guns/weaponry, knowledge/fact books ('why don't penguins feet freeze' type things) - you're probably getting an idea from this list of the eclectic nature of his interests!

I'll try to pick release spots which are places I think he'd have liked, especially outdoor places...

I'm sorry about your nephew, and if I run across any suitable titles I will release for this challenge.

Sorry to hear about your nephew: he sounds like quite an interesting person. This is a nice way to celebrate his memory.
Profile Image
I'll be happy to release something in his memory.

Not sure if it qualifies as "gonzo", but Christopher Moore definitely does over-the-top wacky. There's a food & drink tie-in, and a scene about turkey bowling in a supermarket...

As soon as I come across a suitable title I'd be happy to release it into my little free library in memory of Mike. I'm so sorry to hear about his death. My little free library is in memory of my daughter so I definitely "get it."

but when I remembered I added this Challenge to several cookbooks I'm releasing for the http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/528394 Wine+Food release challenge run by GoryDetails, so I'll have a few to post here.

especially the pizza cookbook - he worked for many years in a butchers, and would then eat pizza on Xmas Day, having spent weeks dealing with frantic turkey orders...

I've released this one which came from his shelves - released in Renton as it's the furthest I've driven on my moped (a good 50 miles from home, and it involved going through the Clyde Tunnel. I was terrified, Mike would have found this hilarious)

he'd also have liked that I released a book about the Brazilian favelos and gang violence in Troon during the golf Open...

and another

Mike was the first male in numerous generations of the family not to be a miner - his father and grandfather both worked at Killoch in Ayrshire until it closed in the 1980s, and his father subsequently worked as a mine engineer in South Africa. His grandpa would have been fascinated by the slate mine we visited yesterday, and I released another of Mike's books there in his memory:
