Nancy Drew: The Haunted Carousel http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13328803/

Complete Thread
My daughter, Becky (BC screen name N-R-Jyzer), was killed on 30 August 2010 when she was struck by a car while riding her bicycle. She would have celebrated her 15th birthday next Valentine's Day. During each of the last five years, we have remembered her and celebrated her short life by releasing books in her memory. It has been extremely gratifying to see books being released around the world in her honor.

I would like to continue this release challenge again this year. The challenge will run the entire month of February 2016, but is especially focused on 14 February 2016. Any children's books would be appropriate for this release, but here is a list of theme ideas that would reflect Becky and her interests: She loved animals in general and particularly cats and horses. She enjoyed skiing, soccer, horseback riding and bicycling. She was a fan of Winnie-the-Pooh, Harry Potter, Disney Fairies, and the Magic Treehouse books. She had also just discovered the Beverly Cleary and Nancy Drew books during the last few months of her life. And because she was born on Valentine's day, books that are somehow related to the ideas of love, hearts, hugs, valentine's or her favorite colors (pink and red) would all also be appropriate.

Please indicate in release note or a journal entry that the book is being released in Becky's memory. If you could also include a link to the Becky's Hugs page ( http://www.BeckysHugs.com/ ), it would be greatly appreciated. If you are registering books specifically for this challenge, there are Becky's Hugs bookplates available from the supply store: http://tinyurl.com/BeckyLabel1 and http://tinyurl.com/BeckyLabel2 . You can also download printable labels (compatible with the Avery 5163/8163, 2 inch x 4 inch, 10 to a page format) here: http://www.bcindc.zoiks.org/---/remembering-becky

Any books released for this challenge will be appreciated (both wild and controlled releases are welcome). My personal goal will be to release at least one book every day during February, and 15 on Valentine's day to celebrate Becky's 15th birthday.

If you have any questions, please post them here and I'll try to answer them. I'm looking forward to seeing the books released in February! Thanks.

Count me in, ResQgeek! : ) I lost a Nephew who was like a Son (born on Valentine's Day) in the month of August 1999. I also lost my oldest Son (born on February 24th, but DUE on Valentine's Day) in the month of August 2005, so your "Becky's HUGS" Challenge, particularly in the month of February...is near and dear to my heart. ; )

I'm in!
I've been hanging on to a passel of children's books for this challenge - I'm sure I have some horses, cats and sports in the stash.

Me too!
I have been amassing children's books -- some for this challenge and some for the festivals. This is the one challenge every year where, in addition to wild releasing in the traditional sense, I try to make it a point (esp on Feb 14th) to give books directly to children in Becky's memory. It is a privilege to participate.

With supply orders taking 21 days to deliver, I went ahead and placed an order for label style #1 today, so they will arrive in time for me to have the books I have set aside ready to release in Becky's Memory. With each passing year, I find these books feel heavier and heavier, and that it also takes me a little longer to do things, so I have to start registering the perfect little "gems" I found for Becky a bit early. ; )

I have gotten in the habit of registering and setting aside any book that feels appropriate to release in Becky's memory as I find them, so I'm not scrambling to find books to release as February draws near. I have two small boxes on the bottom shelf of my book case that are reserved just for this challenge, which should be enough for this year and maybe next year as well.

I'm glad that this challenge is important to you, though I wish is wasn't sad reasons so similar to my own.

I'm glad that this challenge is important to you, though I wish is wasn't sad reasons so similar to my own.

Thank you for your kind thoughts, ResQqeek. ; )

The days and months of the events are unbelievably similar, although my Nephew would be 34 this year...my Son, 43. There are some things that time truly cannot heal...at least for me that seems to be true. Seems like yesterday each and every day, and yet it has been years. My heart goes out to you and your family. This Challenge, and your Website, are such lovely ways to honor your Becky, and will definitely be mentioned in the Journal Entries I make for the books I release...including the link! : )

I've been saving a few books for this.

I missed last year but this year I'm back.

I don't have a lot of books, but I will release a few.

Next Monday is February 1st, so it's almost time to start releasing books in Becky's memory. Post links to your releases in this thread. Thanks!

1. Kickoff by Donna King...Soccer Tribute. ; )...Themed/Multiple Challenges

Wow...your journal entry brought tears to my eyes, and totally captures the spirit of Becky's Hugs. Thank you!

Probably spoiled the "surprise" that looks as though it hasn't gotten to your doorstep just yet though...DARN! I know weather for the Postal Workers is definitely a factor! ; )

You might want to know that when you click on the http://www.BeckysHugs.com link, it is kicking out a message stating that the domain name has expired. Do you need help with getting this renewed? I'm not quite certain how it works, nor if there is a fee involved or not...I imagine so, but I would help in whatever way possible. Also not certain how that will affect the releases we are making, since that link will be listed on a great many of the items involved. I tried to go to it via a new window with the same result. The other links work just fine. Posting here so others will be aware, in hopes that it also saves you some time. I'll PM you, as well. ; )

Thanks for the heads-up on the domain. This has happened before...I'll send a note to the person who graciously pays for the domain name for us and remind them to renew it.

Meanwhile, if you would prefer to link directly to the Facebook page, the direct link is http://www.facebook.com/BeckysHugs

Super! : ) I'll add the Facebook link to each of my Journal Entries while I'm uploading the Booklabel pic from your special Mulberry Street release that I managed to save. : ) HUGS to you and yours! ; )

Just heard back...the domain has been renewed. If it isn't already working, it should be soon.

2 Today
I had hoped to release at least one a day, but didn't find anyone to give my first book to yesterday. Luckily, I was able to give away 2 books today:

On The Day You Were Born http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13799399
Good Night, Virginia http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13589807

2. BRIAN's Winter by Gary Paulsen

The snowy scene shown on this book cover wouldn't be a good location for a soccer match, but it would be great for Christmas Tree harvesting...and for the skiing that Becky enjoyed. ; )

Placed on the short block wall at one of the entrances to the Soccer Fields on the back side of Hohokam Park...home for Spring Baseball Training for the Oakland A's, and for years before their new stadium was built elsewhere...the Chicago Cubs.

3. Little Black, A Pony by Walter Farley...Themed/Multiple Challenges

In this little old neighborhood of mine...not too far down the street, there are still a couple of homes with a pasture area that comes clear up to the sidewalk. Each is home to a horse or two...another of Becky's loves. To this day, the neighborhood children still go to feed them carrots by the fence where I left this book. ; )

NOTE: Release for Day 2 on 2/2 above looks like when I posted late in the evening the system bumped the date to the next day 2/3, which is today. : {

4. Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary...Themed/Multiple Challenges

5. The Tale of Tom Kitten by Beatrix Potter...Themed/Multiple Challenges

Edited to add:

I think Becky would love the picture I added to this Journal Entry. The kitty even has a heart-shaped name tag...HUGS! ; )

6. The Little Sea Pony by Helen Cresswell

7. Shore life by Moira Butterfield...Themed/Multiple Challenges

Placed on a bench along the shoreline of Red Mountain Lake at Red Mountain Park amidst a badelynge of ducks filled to the brim with bread crumbs shared by children along the water's edge, who followed my every step (too funny!) thinking I might have dessert for them! : D

8. How to Catch a Heffalump (Disney's Pooh) (Disney's Wonderful World of Reading) by A. A. Milne, Disney...Themed/Multiple Challenges

Found the perfect nook at the base of the trunk of a giant 50 year old Ash tree that looks very much like the nook where Pooh and Piglet are sitting under the eaves in the cover illustration of this book (minus the Tulips and Wildflowers in the grass) to release this one for Becky Hugs Day #8 of 2016.

9. I Can Jump Higher! (All-Star Readers: Level 2) by Paul Z. Mann

10. Marathon Miranda by Elizabeth Winthrop...Themed/Multiple Challenges

11. The Cat in the Hat Movie Storybook...Themed/Multiple Challenges

12. Freaky Friday by Mary Rogers

13. The Summer of the Swans by Betsy Byars....Themed/Multiple Challenges

Left at the base of a locked private property gate (40 years ago this didn't exist and one could go sit on a boulder along the water's edge in peace and watch the antics of the resident and migrating waterfowl) that also has a sign that reads..."DO NOT FEED THE SWANS"...on the path that leads to a little bridge just inside the gate that goes over the water to the man made lake in the Woodridge Lake neighborhood.
