2016 Theater Challenge - post here!

Davros-10 has been running an ongoing TV series challenge - here's the 2015 link - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/515474

msrubble has done a year-long movie challenge - 2015 link here - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/515208

Anyone interested in a 2016 theater challenge? (Not to step on anyone's toes - if there's already something like this I haven't seen it - please enlighten me!)

• Scripts, books made into plays or musicals, movies that were made into musicals, operas/operettas (and their librettos), etc. - if it happens live on a stage and involves spoken/sung words, it probably works. Even books ABOUT stage shows - fiction or non-fiction (for instance, a mystery involving a summer stock actor or a book about the Passion Play at Oberammergau). Explain why your release fits the challenge in your post.

• Thanks to solittletime for reminding me about radio plays and full-cast audiobooks, which also count.

• They should be actual books, of the sort that would normally have an ISBN (unless it pre-dates ISBNs), not souvenir programs. Physical audiobooks do qualify.

• Any sort of release: controlled, wild, charity, OBCZ, LFL, RABCK, whatever.

• Post releases with links.

• Multiple-challenge and themed releases welcome. Release photos are always fun.

• January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2016 in your time zone.

Opinions? Questions? Did I miss anything?

According to my current read (The Man Who Invented Christmas, by Les Standiford), it was common practice during the Victorian era - copyright being a lot weaker then - for popular novels to be turned into (unauthorized) stage versions: Dickens's A Christmas Carol, Nicholas Nickleby, The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, The Cricket in the Hearth, The Chimes, and Martin Chuzzlewit were all staged during his lifetime...and undoubtedly others, but those are the ones mentioned in the text.

Sounds like fun, although for some of us (like me) who aren't up on the theatre scene, it would take a little research. I have no idea what books have been adapted for the stage lately. But I'd give it a try.

I don't expect to have very many, and if the original doesn't have the same title as the stage version I might miss it..but I figured it might be interesting to try, and I do have one or two to get started with.

Some ideas

I have no idea what books have been adapted for the stage lately. But I'd give it a try.

Here are some titles I found to start with...these have all been made into plays or musicals (some with more changes than others!):

Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt (opening soon on Broadway)
Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
Fun Home by Alison Bechdel
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
Matilda by Roald Dahl
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow
Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot (musical: Cats)
Show Boat by Edna Ferber
Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
Misery by Stephen King (opening soon on Broadway)
Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon (musical: The King and I)
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux
Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren
Wicked by Gregory Maguire
Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener (musical: South Pacific)
War Horse by Michael Morpurgo
A Christmas Story by Jean Shepherd
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (musical: Jekyll & Hyde)
Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers
The Color Purple by Alice Walker

And for actual plays, there's always Shakespeare... ;)

Thanks for posting the list. I found three on the list tonight at a used book store. Well, actually, there were four but I forgot another was on the list, so didn't grab it.

But I've got three books to start anyway : )

..but I have a few books that would qualify, so I might do it anyway.

Yes, others may join in later, hopefully.

Found this lurking a bit further down on the release challenges and almost missed it!

Wikipedia should help immensely, as does your list above. I have several and didn't even know it. I'll put Jane Eyre and Hamlet in next December's name box, so I will match up monthly other challenge release ones with yours. I'm sure I probably have a few books that haven't matched any other challenge that might match yours!
Profile Image
So far have found:

Tess of the D'Urberville's
Hamlet
Jane Eyre

these are now marked and in NEXT year's Names and D for December challenges.

Off to look for more.

and for a few more:
Lord of the Rings ( I didn't know that - thank goodness for Google!)
Wuthering Heights
The Joy Luck Club

Are you allowing novelizations? These are often based on movies, but sometimes those movies were adapted from stage plays... things like Grease or Little Shop of Horrors have novelizations-of-the-film, but I don't know if you'd count them as being sufficiently tied to the stage versions.

There have been some unexpected stage adaptations of books: I know of a musical based on the manga Black Butler, and another on Naruto...

If the movie was based on a play, then there was a novelization of the movie, sure.

I saw a musical version of Coraline off-Broadway one year: it was fun!

Wow: " a sebaceous fifteen-year-old at war with his own surging adolescence". Seems a bit harsh to call someone "sebaceous", but on the other hand, the description certainly applies to a lot of the fifteen-year-olds I've known. :p

I've known a few sebaceous fifteen-year-olds too!

I was surprised to discover that a book I'd never heard of (before I bought it in a library book sale for 20¢) had actually been turned into a play. Unfortunately, the reviews weren't great but good reviews aren't a prerequisite for this challenge!

I've been having fun discovering which books have been turned into theatrical productions. It requires a bit of detective work, especially since there doesn't seem to be a theatrical version of IMDB.

As with so many of the books being used for this challenge: I didn't know there was a stage version. I imagine it's a good one..

How about a book that's based on a stage show? There's a regular live show in Australia in which people read out letters they've written around pre-set themes. There's been a few books that are essentially "spin-offs" of the live shows.
