WINNERS ANNOUNCED - 2015 You're Such an Animal Release Challenge

The 2015 You're Such an Animal Release Challenge begins at 12:01 a.m. (your time) on September 1, 2015, and ends at 11:59 p.m. (your time) on October 4, 2015 (in order to include “World Animal Day” on October 4). This is the twelfth year for this challenge, and each year has been loads of fun.

It’s easy. Just WILD release at least 20 books where the name of the book has within it the name of some kind of animal (not human), insect, or reptile. Any once-living animal or mammal (except man) will do—cat, dog, chicken, wolf, tiger, monkey, insects, lizards, arachnids, birds, dinosaurs, creature, and beast are acceptable words. You can use the gender names of animals and the baby names animals, too: mare, stallion, pup, kitten, kitty, puppy, pony, kid, etc. I even allow mythical creatures (phoenix, griffin, mermaid, dragon, etc.) Books entitled “The Cat in the Hat,” “Along Came a Spider,” “The Mouse That Roared,” “The Monkey House” and “A Bird in the Hand” are all good. However, a book titled “Rin Tin Tin” doesn’t work because although it’s a story about a dog, it does not have the word “dog” in the title. Embedded words are also acceptable (i.e., KIDnapped, LASSie, The SHADe of the Moon). Though controlled releases are not allowed, releases to any official OBCZ is satisfactory because OBCZs are somewhat Wild in that you never know who will be picking up the books.

You may use foreign (non-English) titles—but the title must be translated into English when you put down the link. Translations must be as the author would have intended them (so if there is more than one meaning to a word and one of those meanings is an animal, it can only be used if the author would have intended it).

In the past, there have been members who have issued special challenges within the Animal Challenge, for instance, releasing only one book of each kind of animal or only books with the word cat in them, or you may wish to theme your releases (i.e., The Rats of NIMH released at a science lab). I’m not requiring any of these, but will take note of any extra releasing complexities in the challenge and will give extra credit for creativity and difficulty, so PLEASE be sure to let me know when you add pics of the books released or when you do themed releases. There will be prizes awarded at the completion of the contest.

Each link you give for your released books should look like this:

#6. Cat http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/3243651. (Themed release with pic)

It must tell me which number book you are releasing and the kind of animal. Credit is given only for number of books, not number of animals released per title. If you release “The Wolf and the Dove” you get only one credit. Again, be sure to let me know if you’ve themed your releases, put pics of the release points, or done other things which I might give extra credit for. Come and join the fun. Everyone is welcome.

Here are more specific answers to some questions asked in the past:

The following are okay:

Release more than one copy of an animal book or duplicates of the same animal
animals of all sorts (mammals, fish, birds, bugs)
the gender of any of those animals (drake, mare, stallion)
Breeds: maltese, yorkshire, palomino, etc.

The following words are good:

Angel
Devil
Dragon
Ghost
Vampire
Animal
Mammal
Beast
Hound
bait (because bait can be a fish or previously living animal)
creature
serpent
Fowl
Pet
Ass
Cattle
bug
insect
Reptile
cootie (or louse)
slang (Kitty, Puss, Doggy, etc., but spelled correctly)
all the 'baby' animal names are acceptable (duckling, cygnet, pup etc...)
plural (ants, dogs, Appaloosas etc...)
Spellings must be correct (cat not Kat, lion not Lyon)
No abbreviations (alligator, not gator; dinosaur, not dino)
embedded animals are okay (harry pOTTER or clASS, etc- -
embedded animal has to fit the language. (so, German animal in a German title, etc.) -
embedded also has to be in ONE word, not across spaces.
embedded--can be in the subtitle (even if it doesn’t show in the original book title, be sure it is in your journal entry)
Readers' Digest or other book collections okay as long as one of the titles has an animal in it and the title is shown on the front (or spine) of the book must be in the title (not the author)
the animal has to match the language (so Spanish book must have a Spanish animal name)

The words below won't count:

gator
coon
Capricorn, Leo, Taurus (the Zodiac signs)
Prey
Wild
tom

Got it, thanks.

Yes, besides, neither are an animal.
Profile Image
I'm in! And I'll be doing some overlapping challenges: there's a "Crazy Cat Lady" challenge ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/521709 ) where all the "cat" entries will qualify for this one too, and of course the "Talk Like a Pirate Day" challenge ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/522389 ) may include some embedded "rat"s that would work for this as well.

And I have saved up some more... unusual... animal-titles...

I just bet you have!! Can't wait to see them.
Profile Image
And I have saved up some more... unusual... animal-titles...

I bought a book a couple of days ago specifically because it has an unusual animal in the title. It only cost 80p and will be a quick read, so it's a winner all round!
Profile Image
I presume that "leviathan" isn't animal-specific enough (too much like "monster")?

The dictionary definition is too non-specific. Sorry.
Profile Image
Yay!
Profile Image
I don't have 20 relevant books yet but maybe they'll turn up... so I'm in.

I just have to ask though - do Moomins count? :D Since you allow stuff like dragons and vampires and I do have one Moomin book that needs to be released next month...

I try not to stockpile books for more than a couple of months, so I almost never have 20 to begin with..but I play anyway. :)

I just have to ask though - do Moomins count? :D Since you allow stuff like dragons and vampires and I do have one Moomin book that needs to be released next month...

Since mythical creatures are allowed, it would seem likely..and Moomins are so cute! But of course, Secretariat has the final word.

Dragons and vampires are in the dictionary, but Moomins are not. I'm not a sci-fi reader, so I'm clueless. Though, if it's a fantasy animal, I would think it qualifies.

Moomins: http://www.walnutgreydesign.com/---/tove-and-the-moomins/

I don't really mind if they don't count, just thought to ask since I'm going to release that book anyway :)

Gee, this could start getting out-of-hand. If Moomins are included, what about Smurfs and Wombles? (Only kidding - I'm not really expecting them to be added!) ;)

PS Moomins are children's book characters.

For those of you who are not familiar with elj's releases, he frequently puts photos of exactly where he's released the book. If you double click on the photograph it will enlarge. It's like a treasure hunt to find the books, I'm sure. Meanwhile, we get the lovely intimate pictures of France.

This time, his first release for the challenge is very appropriate, IMHO.

I very much enjoy the FABULOUS photos elj and others put in their journal entries and dream of one day having a camera or phone that takes pictures so that I could do the same. : )

And I love getting to play with all of you. I even have one or two embedded animals this year, though I'm not very good at recognizing them.
Profile Image
Really not? One would never know it! : ) My "embedded" inspiration came from your Challenge Guidelines suggestions! ; ) I am also inspired by the photos others put in their Journal Entries. I don't have the equipment to do that right now, but maybe I could add an Internet link to some of the places...like Red Mountain Park in Mesa, AZ, which is 8 acres of natural "heaven" in the midst of the city, with a community lake for fishing, three hiking trails, numerous sport courts, picnic areas, and other activities...or perhaps I could use a website photo, although one may need to think about images that may be copyrighted in that case. ; )

Loved the photo on Center Street. Beautiful and looks so peaceful. And didn't know that Bison were part of the area. Always think of them in the central plains and north central. Perhaps I need to study the migration of the bison a bit.
Profile Image
And didn't know that Bison were part of the area.

Well, I think the barbecue place gets its bison meat from ranch-raised bison, and while there are some bison ranches in New England I don't know that there were ever significant wild herds here. Darned good eating, in any case! (For the curious, the reference is to the smoked bison burger I had at B. T.'s Smokehouse in Sturbridge MA, where I released Vale of the Vole. In fact, all the releases were part of a road trip with a friend to several different food-places in Mass. and Connecticut.)

What a mess! I have edited to correct the numbering issue in this post and those that follow. Sorry Secretariat. I am no spring CHICKEN and this growing old stuff is for the BIRDS! ; )

lol, I call myself the blonde senior and have had to go back several times to change my #'s

HAHAHAHA! Hello sha! Good to "see" you after my return to BC. Too bad I don't have the "blonde" status to fall back on. I went straight from mousy brown, right past grey highlights to white highlights...too much STRESS! THANKS for your post here! I just found two books on this list that I hadn't "officially" released after releasing them on 9/2. Still trying to find my way around the "new" site after 9 years. I did finally figured out what I was doing and still have some releases to find to repair. I was making release notes in journal entries and marking them TRAV, but couldn't figure out why little Ballycumber wasn't racing along in the journal! Also keep forgetting to change the date to the actual release date when the release notes come up the day you are finally getting around to having time to post them. They say old dogs can't learn new tricks...but this old bird is having a tenacious go at it! ; )

Oh dear...I don't remember seeing or reading that and I know it's there because I laughed really hard when I read it the first time (and previously years ago) because I think I actually do have a Rin Tin Tin title in another box further back in storage. I could run a library out of storage with all the bookshelves in boxes I have there. Am making a dent with these challenges releases though! Thank you for taking the time to respond!
