I know I'm setting my challenges up early but that's to give everyone time to think about them, ask questions so I can make sure the rules are clear and get their books ready. The reason this is USA only is I want to give a prize to the winner and I can't afford to ship overseas.

In this challenge (wild releases only) each letter of the title will be worth the points it would get in a scrabble game. You will list your book titles with the scrabble value and keep a running total of your points. The person with the most points at the end of the challenge wins. As per scrabble rules no proper names or titles with punctuation in them. Multiple words will be allowed only because there has already been a one word only challenge and we can't make it totally difficult.

And thanks to GoryDetails we have a site we can post our words and get the totals tallied for us... http://www.dvorkin.com/scrabscor.html This site does handle multiple words but not punctuation.

(1 point)-A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T, R
(2 points)-D, G
(3 points)-B, C, M, P
(4 points)-F, H, V, W, Y
(5 points)-K
(8 points)- J, X
(10 points)-Q, Z

Example:

Sweetgrasss (14) - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13508260/
A Deadly Practice (26) - http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/7408242/ (total=40)
etc

Interesting idea! But as a Scrabble fan, I have to point out that proper names aren't allowed, nor are words with punctuation in them, nor are multiple words, nor embedded words - and I admit I think it'd be more fun to play by those rules, even if it does leave out some spectacular X-and-Z-based proper names {wry grin}. It is your challenge, though!

Qualifying words aside, should there be limits on how many books/words one can post? One a day, perhaps, or three a week, or some other limit that would help balance the Scrabble-score aspect against the sheer number-of-releasable-books aspect.

Just my thoughts!

Oh, and I found this handy site that will provide the Scrabble score for individual words:

http://www.dvorkin.com/scrabscor.html

That site does handle multiple words, but not punctuation, fwiw.

Thank you! I have changed the rules to no proper names or punctuation, but am allowing multiple words as we are just now doing a one word only challenge so there won't be a lot of one word books left to release in October.

I don't want to limit the number of books a person can release for the challenge. The idea of challenges is to get a lot of books released and I haven't seen anyone else limit the number of books anyone could release for their challenges.

I didn't mean that we should limit it to one-word titles, just that only one of the words in the title should count - so if I released "War and Peace" I'd only nominate the word with the highest score.

Challenge rules can vary widely, and I have participated in some challenge-games that limited the releases, so that's entirely up to you. In this case, I figured that if we're working on Scrabble scores, that should be the highlight, not the total number of books released. (And - to be purely selfish here - I release lots of books and would not want to have to add up the Scrabble scores for all of them, so I imagine I'd only post my "best Scrabble word" releases anyway.)

I'm just thinking of this as a more "Scrabble-y" challenge than a " most books released" challenge, as so many other challenges go for "most books". (October includes several popular challenges as it is, so there will be ample incentive for mass book releases.) In this case, if the number of releases are limited, it opens the possibility of winning to someone who may have fewer releases but with much better scores, which seems more Scrabble-esque to me - but, again, it's your challenge!

Plus I run the Halloween Challenge and participate in Tick Tock which are two of the biggest Challenges I do. And I wouldn't play if I had to add up the points myself.

But... I tried GoryDetails scorekeeper and Yes had 6 points but No only had 2, so Yes it is.

I don't know how active I'll be as those other two Challenges keep me very, very busy, but Yes, I'll try.

But... I tried GoryDetails scorekeeper and Yes had 6 points but No only had 2, so Yes it is.

I'll try to play too.

It would be a fun twist if we could only count one of the words in the title, but it would be more work to score each word separately to decide which one to count..

As for limits, I've seen some with minimums, but I don't think I've played in one with a maximum.

***that was my thought too. if it becomes too much work then it stops being fun and people won't want to play

***I don't think we need to limit the number of books anyone can enter. to me that would take away the competition side of it and since I have a really nice prize to send (I will announce in the listing for the actual challenge) I want people to really play for it :-).

And I forgot to say, Ill just play for the fun of it, not for prizes. : )

This fan who hasn't played in years welcomes the opportunity to participate! ; )

I'm so glad this one enticed you to play with us for this one :-). I am trying to find some unique ideas for release challenges to add to the already great ones out there. I like to keep them short... one month.... so we can move onto another one... trying to top this one though is going to be tough... lol... can't wait for this one to start!

Because I haven't played Scrabble in years and am a bit rusty and memory challenged...might you be able to clarify something for me? Your guidelines above state [As per scrabble rules no proper names or titles with punctuation in them]. Does that mean if a title has an apostrophe "s" to pluralize, an exclamation point, or a colon that it will not be allowed at all, or do we just ignore the punctuation?

[Does that mean if a title has an apostrophe "s" to pluralize, an exclamation point, or a colon that it will not be allowed at all, or do we just ignore the punctuation?]

Got to wondering about this when I recently had this Pirate's Day release with a colon:

(TRAVEL) Unlimited: Uncommon (ADVENTURES) for the Mature Traveler
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/3887227

I also have some like these two children's books that I'm planning on releasing to a Women's shelter:

Help! I'm Drowning! (an exclamation point...or two in this case)
Dr. Zarnof's Plot (an apostrophe)

Bookworminusall - correct... no punctuation in the words... no colons, apostrophe's, commas, etc
no, you cannot just ignore the punctuation :-). sorry.... there has to be some difficulty to the game :-)

Would I be able to play just for fun and no prizes? I don't do many wild releases but would love to join in what looks to be a fun game if I can.

Would I be able to play just for fun and no prizes?

That's what I do, even though I am in the US.

Diane, you would be more than welcome to play just for fun and I do think this will be fun. I just couldn't afford to mail a prize overseas. I play most of the challenges for the fun of it as well since I never have enough books to compete but do enjoy playing.

WHOO HOOO...happy dance that Diane-Fraser can join the FUN! : )

And thanks for clarifying that my books with punctuation (thought maybe at least the part beFORE a colon could count) are complete DUDS for this Challenge zbird! HAHAHA! Your published poetry books are NOT...however. ; ) Not quite certain how to request as yet...I know there's a way...but I'm going to see if my local library would add them to their collection.

How nice of you! I hadn't even thought to ask my local library! I had mainly published the poetry as my legacy. Something for my friends and family to have to remember me when I am no longer here.

[...but I'm going to see if my local library would add them to their collection. ]

[I hadn't even thought to ask my local library!]

Many Public Libraries have an InterLibrary Loan process where you can request items other Libraries may have in their collection that yours does not. It usually takes a while, and the check-out time is shorter. Additionally, if your Library doesn't own a certain item, you can put in a request that they purchase it for their collection. I don't know what kind of time frame that process takes, but I have a filled out a form for both of your titles and we shall find out! Your family and friends may like to do this in your area. ; )

Have some Scrabble titles ready to go and can't wait to play...seven days from today!

Thank you zbird, I'll probably try some dual realeasing in October with the other fun challenges in this forum. See you then :)

And yes, there was a comma and an exclamation point in that sentence.

I just realized that titles can't have ANY punctuation and had to go back and delete the Scrabble Challenge link in 24 titles.

(And no, you won't see them yet, I'm only up to September 30th on release notes and only up to September 28 in posting to Challenges, but I have released most of the books already; a few will be released tomorrow.)

I can't believe I forgot the no-punctuation rule. I was so busy checking to be sure I put the link in every October release, that I forgot some of them don't count.

What a dope! : )

PS - If I forget again in the future and post some with punctuation, it's not intentional; someone take me to task and I'll fix it.

And I just went back and deleted seven more with proper names.

I apologize for not being here for a few days but as most know SC was hit by heavy rains and has been flooded. Things have settled down in our part as the floods move to the lower areas now. Roads and birdges are out but we are trying to get back to a normal routine now. So, I ask do you want me to tell you what the prize is or make it a surprise when the challenge ends?

I'm glad you survived the floods. I hope you didn't have any damage.

And since I'm not playing for prizes, it doesn't matter to me.

In my case, it's not so much that I'm specifically *not* playing for prizes - more that I don't expect to be in the running. Other than that, I agree with what slt said. :)

Are all capitalized words excluded, or just people's names? For instance, August in http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13562049

ETA: I have another book with Chevrolet and Saturday in the title. http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13627333/

Also Cutler Creek. http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13621628/

Are those prohibited or allowed? I haven't played Scrabble in so long that I don't know how the rules are interpreted.

Are all capitalized words excluded, or just people's names? For instance, August in http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13562049

Well, *most* of the words in book titles are usually capitalized, so if we can't any of them, we'll be stuck with a lot of "the" and "of". :p

Until zbird gives us a ruling, I've been trying to exclude words that I would normally capitalize in a sentence. So I didn't count titles with Tennessee and or Hamlet or Cape Perdido. August is tricky because it's not *always* a proper noun...just most of the time.

Any formal names that would normally be capitalized are excluded.... peoples names, state and city names... but august is a month and is not always capitalized... so just use your own good judgement on whether a word is normally capitalized because as it was pointed out all the words in a book title are usually started with a capital letter.

I think I goofed and may have one up there with the word "Hawaiian" that will not count. I will go up and delete it, as I believe it would always be considered a proper noun these days . ; )
