Welcome to the challenge!!!

I’m at least the third hostess for this weekly challenge, which has been continuous for many, many years.

GUIDELINES AND RULES:

Each Saturday (or on occasion on Friday) a book cover is posted as the theme for the coming week. The object is to find books with the themed cover for the week and release them within the week. For instance, the week’s theme might be cover with a pen showing on the cover (modern or quill) or the word pen within the title of the book; or the colors yellow and pink showing on the cover; or authors named Christopher.

Sometimes we will have a “Mystery Namer” – someone other than me who will set up the challenge. Just PM me if you would like to be a “Mystery Namer” and let me know which week you would like to do so.

1) Saturday (in US and Canada) is the overlap day when either the previous week's cover can be released or the new cover can be released. FOR EUROPE, Sunday is the overlap day.

2) Both the front and the back of the book are considered “the cover,” so pictures on the back are acceptable.

3) Any kind of release is OK but only catches from wild releases will count.

4) Each person must keep track of their releases each week which must be posted here with a link to the JE. PLEASE DO NOT go back and edit a previous post and add more releases to it, but make a new post for releases of any given week.

5) If you wild release a book and it gets caught then you have a release counted and a catch counted. However, if the person who caught the book releases it and it gets caught again - that's not another catch for you since you didn't do the second release.

6) When you have a cover which could work for 2 consecutive weeks, then you must to decide which week to count it for as a release (remember that it’s only one book and can only be counted once).

7) Anyone is welcome to join this challenge at any time and you can participate as much as you like. You can begin on Week 1 or Week 31 or Week 51, whatever suits you.

IF YOU DON’T WISH TO BE A MYSTERY NAMER, YOU CAN SEND ME SUGGESTIONS FOR BOOK COVERS! I will periodically use them.

For those in the U.S. (and its protectorates), Happy Independence Day. In honor there of, our cover should have either:

Nope. Hat and cap are specific. I didn't use the two I had with military helmets from the crusades either.

This one will take some hunting and it may be helpful to look for older mass market paperbacks. Mine range from one in 1954 which has no ISBN to 1992. In any event, you're looking for a cover where the picture is set into some kind of a frame, square, rectangle, circle, oval, any shape as along as it has a frame around it (even if it is only a band of color as opposed to an obvious frame). I have a few examples to help you see what I mean:

http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13497496
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13497501
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13498316

I have two more books but they're too old for the covers to show. I don't have a scanner and I'm not tech savvy enough to do anything else. I'll explain the covers as best I can. One has the picture in a simple oval surrounded by a line of the color yellow as a frame. The other is quite artistic. The picture is a series of 3-D rectangles cascading toward the front and on each there are pictures of different people. The effect is that they look like skyscrapers in a metropolis (in this case it's supposed to be New York).

I hope you get the idea. I'll be checking in periodically in the next few days to answer questions because I'm sure you'll have them. Good luck.

• What if the frame is a cutout, like this one? (not my copy but it's the same cover)

• Do framed _titles_ count, or only images?

This is yet another week when the books my brother (Croyd) left behind when he moved are going to be very useful. Many of the covers are in that style. Three words to look for:

Dragonlance
Forgotten Realms

Sorry, neither of those work for this week. Cutouts are different than what I mean (and may be used in the future on their own) and frame has to be the picture not the words.

As I suspected. Oh well, Dragonlance it is, then.

2. http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13498722 - there is a very narrow ‘frame’ of white round the entire edge of front cover

i've lost the use of my computer and am trying to register on a tablet although full JEs with links and cover photos I have to add myself and release notes may have to come much later when it gets fixed and I get caught up on releases I've already done.

This one does have a cover photo but you may have to click on it to enlarge it to see the double white lines above and below the author's picture. I hope this link will work so you can tell me if that is enough of a frame?

Yes, it's similar to those of ekorren.

Please click on the cover image to enlarge it to let me know if you consider this has a frame around the picture. Thank you.

Yes, for the large square, which is the entire picture. Even Marley would work as a pic within a pic.

You were so right that there would be questions. Do you consider this to be a framed picture?

Does this first one work? The author is popping out of a ragged edge torn paper looking frame in the middle of the title (also in a frame, which wouldn't count) on this cover.

Sorry, but neither works. The Madden isn't truly in a frame. The other is a cutout like the hyphen8 showed below.

Oh schucks! Well, I guess they'll be good examples of what not to use! ; ) I'll edit the book release notes to remove the Challenge from those. This one WILL take some hunting! : )

For me it now basically boils down to the question how much frame is necessary to qualify as a frame in terms of the challenge.

German publisher Diogenes uses a design with a framing line around title and picture, like here:
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13494253
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13455556

Here the portrait photos are printed with a margin, but not additionally framed:
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13455504

A thin black line divides picture and background:

1, 2, and 4 are fine. 3 appears to be just photos on top of the book art.

But if I missed yours just let me know. I'll be back.

I didn't know how to combine all in one post on a tablet the way I would if my computer was working.

I'm often working off my tablet because it's upstairs and the computer is downstairs, so I know your challenges.

http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13237765

It's got little green designs in all 4 corners, reminds me of the little "corners" you put around a photo in a photo album years ago. Is that enough of a frame, 4 corners, no sides?

(Again, you may have to click on the image to enlarge it to see what I mean.)

Hmm, other than that you introduced me to another Gary Paulsen book I didn't know about, that one can go either ways. It is "kind of" framed, but not in a traditional sense. I think I'll allow it.

I'll allow both. I really like the one for The Hangman - very clever framing.

Well, I _had_ decided to not come up with any questionable items, just release a few that are definitely valid, and forget about the rest. But then I found books where there clearly is a frame on the cover which frames... nothing. Going by the words, there should be a picture or title in the frame. So... are we fans of abstract art enough to call an empty frame a framed picture?

Sorry, the challenge is for a picture in a frame, not just the frame.

since July 20th and can't access my word processing files among other things that are missing, so I won't be posting releases here for a while. I have been able to register books on a tablet with coded notes to myself about what challenge links to add later on when the computer is fixed. And I have been releasing but not doing release notes. I'm guessing it will be a while after it is finally fixed before I get caught up.

X-posted to the Challenges I am active in.

So sorry to hear that. Frustrating when you're used to access. How quickly we've become dependent on it, isn't it?

Are you sure you want to delete this item? It cannot be undone.
