2015 Canada Days Release Challenge - Winners announced

The challenge starts at 12:01 am (your time) on Wednesday June 24 and continues until Sunday July 5 at 12 midnight (your time). That will give us 12 full days of releasing and it runs over Quebec's National Holiday (on the 24th), Canada Day and Memorial Day in NL (on July 1) and US Independence Day (July 4)! You may wild release books anytime during that period to count for the challenge as long as they are written by Canadians or are set in Canada.

The special theme for this year is poetry. Some children's books are written in verse so they count but if you don't have any books that fit the special theme do not despair as there are many opportunities to win prizes. See below.

Here are the rules for the challenge:

1. Books written by Canadian citizens or landed immigrants count.
2. Books set in Canada even if they are not written by Canadians count.
3. Books must be wild-released but I will allow OBCZ releases as well.
5. Anyone can join.
6. There will be prizes distributed as follows:
a) Prize for most books released in Canada
b) Prize for the most books released outside of Canada
c) Prize for best release location
d) Prize for most books reflecting the special theme released by one releaser
e) Prize drawn at random from the Canadian participants
f) Prize drawn at random from the non-Canadian participants
g) Prize drawn one month after end of challenge for best catch
h) Some just because prizes

I'm hoping that the extra day of releasing and two weekends will spur participants to release even more books.

Thanks to the amazing Ibis3 the chart of all the releases will be updated once a day. You can find it here:

Could be. You never know what the host will deem worthy of a prize.

Thanks for organizing this challenge year after year!

Always enjoy releasing Canadian authors to the unsuspecting public. :)

LOL! I guess you're ready!
Profile Image
registered and labelled.. and ready to go
Profile Image
I'll need to scour my availables to see if I have more authors lurking
Profile Image

I'm in!

Already had my first mistake of registering the same book twice, so should be good from here!

I think you allowed this in past years...but maybe not this year?
Profile Image

I thought of this too, but given #3 of the rules I figured not.

Funny - J4shaw, where you are now, your time is probably closer to mine than most other BC'ers active on the forum...except that it's Sunday night for you while it's Saturday night for me - you're 22 hours ahead of me. A lot of the Canadians are probably already sleeping, so I'm not expecting any answers until tomorrow at the earliest. ;)

As I replied to hyphen8 they do count. It was an oversight on my part not to state that.
Profile Image
Even if we don't get to count that one, I do have a couple more Canadian books, so please count me in for the challenge, although my releases may mostly be in the last few days once I get home from my trip.

My oversight. Yes, the books sent for the Sweepstakes will also count.

I'm planning to join again . oh yes

looking for them now

Count me in for another round! I look forward to this every year!

I just found out the International Poutine Festival will be held in the Old Port between July 3 and July 5. Poutine and Books! Can it get any better?

Not much! Maybe some nice red wine would go well though.

Mmm, I just resolved to make this a required element of my Canada Day Release Challenge regimen. Luckily, a quick Google shows many good options in the Twin Cities. Any other suggestions for food that will help me maintain the proper frame of mind?

Nanaimo Bars should be part too. As you will see from this Wikipedia article New York claims them too but we know that can't be true:
https://en.wikipedia.org/---/Nanaimo_bar

I know you can get Old Dutch potato chips in the Twin Cities because I saw a truck there when I visited two years ago (can you believe it has already been two years?). They aren't available everywhere in Canada so you often see people getting on a plane in Winnipeg going to Toronto with bags of Old Dutch potato chips.

Those are my suggestions. Anyone else?
Profile Image
For the challenge last year, I released a book at Mac's Fish and Chips shop in Roseville MN and ordered the poutine there. It's supposed to be very good poutine but I have to say it's not for me. You can definitely get Old Dutch chips here, but that's because the company was founded in Saint Paul. I didn't know it had a Canadian connection, but now I think of it I first had the salt and vinegar version in the 1980s in Winnipeg! My suggestion is the maple flavored sandwich cookies shaped like maple leaves with the maple cream filling. You can get them at Trader Joe's. Yum.

Malkin's jam, Cadbury chocolate, and Red Rose tea - that's what my dad always brought back from fishing trips on Lake of the Woods (plus walleye and northern pike ).

Canadian maple syrup is what came to my mind. Delicious on pancakes or ice cream. By the way, Nanaimo bars are to die for, but I am a chocoholic!

But I do plan to participate once again!

Me too!

before I can start releasing. And some of you probably have even less time. Please post links to your releases every day if you can. And if you are releasing poetry or for a special release location please indicate that as well.
Profile Image
I took the day off work to register and label my stash of Canadian books! Why, oh why do I procrastinate so?

My books will be released in both Calgary and enroute to Saskatoon, where we will be attending a memorial service on July 6th.

Happy Releasing!

Could THAT be worth a prize? Here are my first two:

#1 The Blind Assassin, Margaret Atwood http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/13440551/
#2 Pick-Up Sticks, Sarah Ellis http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/1883716/

Fracula, if I remember correctly you released an even 200 last year. If this year you feel the need to take a day off work to label and register, I quake at the thought of how many you may have stacked up. And does anybody have a favourite Nanaimo bar recipe to share?

Well done JudySlump612. And I will email you my Nanaimo bar recipe. Our discussions about it made me decide to make some this weekend since my last physio class is next Tuesday and people always bring in some goodie to treat the staff. Since it is the day before Canada Day I thought I would make a Canadian classic.

Didn't get time to do any releasing today until after supper but we lucked out by going to Assiniboine Park in the west end of the city where the sun was shining. I think there was quite a rainstorm near home but I never felt a drop. I swaddled the books in ziploc bags just in case though.

#6 How the Light Gets In by Louise Penny (themed)
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/12926934/

All of these were done at The Forks, the park at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine River, where people have met for centuries. The last one is themed in that it was released in the Oodena Celebration Circle which has armatures rising up into the sky positioned so celestial objects can be seen through the viewing ports on certain days. The one I chose for this release is the Aeolian Harp armature for Lyra (people taking part in the Ulysses read along will remember a discussion about Aeolian Harps) where the sun rising on the summer solstice can be seen. That's certainly one way the light gets in!

Great book reviews and location notes as always varykino but you didn't really time travel 1000 years to release them did you?

I really like the looks of that greenhouse. But I am filled with admiration for your release of the first copy of Consolation for an Exile at a traditional synagogue. I think that one should be considered for the best themed release prize. (But there is always room for someone else to do even better!)

It is non-stop pouring rain here and not expected to end until late Sunday afternoon, so tough for releasing. I ran into a bus shelter to leave one there, and didn't notice the bus was coming. It stopped to let me on as I was running out but I had no intention of taking the bus! And this on a street where one rarely sees a bus, especially on a Saturday! My laugh of the day.

That is nice that you could get a laugh out of bad weather. We also have stormy weather but the rain comes in wave so if you time it right you can get out without getting wet. You have to be careful though because if you time it wrong you not only risk getting wet but also getting struck by lightning.
