The 2012 You're Such an Animal Release Challenge begins at 12:01 a.m. (your time) on September 1, 2012, and ends at 11:59 p.m. (your time) on October 7, 2011 (in order to include “World Animal Day” on October 4 and then go through the weekend). This is the ninth year for this challenge, and each year has been loads of fun.

It’s easy. Just WILD release at least 20 books where the name of the book has within it the name of some kind of animal (not human), insect, or reptile. Any once-living animal or mammal (except man) will do—cat, dog, chicken, wolf, tiger, monkey, insects, lizards, arachnids, birds, dinosaurs, creature, and beast are acceptable words. You can use the gender names of animals and the baby names animals, too: mare, stallion, pup, kitten, kitty, puppy, pony, kid, etc. I even allow mythical creatures (phoenix, griffin, mermaid, dragon, etc.) Books entitled “The Cat in the Hat,” “Along Came a Spider,” “The Mouse That Roared,” “The Monkey House” and “A Bird in the Hand” are all good. However, a book titled “Lassie” doesn’t work because although it’s a story about a dog, it does not have the word “dog” in the title. Embedded words are also acceptable (i.e., KIDnapped). Controlled releases are not allowed, however, releases to any official OBCZ is satisfactory, because OBCZs are somewhat Wild in that you never know who will be picking up the books.

You may use foreign (non-English) titles—but the title must be translated into English when you put down the link. Translations must be as the author would have intended them (so if there is more than one meaning to a word and one of those meanings is an animal, it can only be used if the author would have intended it).

In the past, there have been members who have issued special challenges within the Animal Challenge, for instance, releasing only one book of each kind of animal or only books with the word cat in them, or you may wish to theme your releases (i.e., The Rats of NIMH released at a science lab). I’m not requiring any of these, but will take note of any extra releasing complexities in the challenge and will give extra credit for creativity and difficulty, so PLEASE be sure to let me know when you add pics of the books released or when you do themed releases. There will be prizes awarded at the completion of the contest.

Each link you give for your released books should look like this:

#6. Cat http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/3243651. (Themed release with pic)

It must tell me which number book you are releasing and the kind of animal. Credit is given only for number of books, not number of animals released per title. If you release “The Wolf and the Dove” you get only one credit. Again, be sure to let me know if you’ve themed your releases, put pics of the release points, or done other things which I might give extra credit for. Come and join the fun. Everyone is welcome.

Here are more specific answers to some questions asked in the past:

The following are okay:

Release more than one copy of an animal book or duplicates of the same animal
animals of all sorts (mammals, fish, birds, bugs)
the gender of any of those animals (drake, mare, stallion)
Breeds: maltese, yorkshire, palomino, etc.

The following words are good:

Angel
Devil
Dragon
Ghost
Vampire
Animal
Mammal
Beast
Hound
bait (because bait can be a fish or previously living animal)
creature
serpent
Fowl
Pet
Ass
Cattle
bug
insect
Reptile
cootie (or louse)
slang (Kitty, Puss, Doggy, etc., but spelled correctly)
all the 'baby' animal names are acceptable (duckling, cygnet, pup etc...)
plural (ants, dogs, Appaloosas etc...)
Spellings must be correct (cat not Kat, lion not Lyon)
No abbreviations (alligator, not gator; dinosaur, not dino)
embedded animals are okay (harry pOTTER or clASS, etc- -
embedded animal has to fit the language. (so, German animal in a German title, etc.) -
embedded also has to be in ONE word, not across spaces.
embedded--can be in the subtitle (even if it doesn’t show in the original book title, be sure it is in your journal entry)
Readers' Digest or other book collections okay as long as one of the titles has an animal in it and the title is shown on the front (or spine) of the book must be in the title (not the author)
the animal has to match the language (so Spanish book must have a Spanish animal name)

The words below won't count:

gator
coon
Capricorn, Leo, Taurus (the Zodiac signs)
Prey
Wild
tom
monster
fiddler
groups (like gaggle of geese- - geese is ok, gaggle is not)

Oh Yay!
Have been waiting for the post that the Challenge is on!!! Definitely in!!! :)

Definitely! And since September is ghosts/spirits/demons month in the Chills & Spills challenge, I hope for some multi-challenge releases...

Edited to add: Talk Like a Pirate Day is Sept. 19, so any piRATe books would count for this challenge too {grin}.

I'd love to participate again.

Woo Hoo!
I love this challenge.

I'm in again this year!

so count me in :o)

Year on year I've done more releases, so this time I'm aiming to beat 76. I've started gathering and registering books ready.

Please include ME!

I've got some books put aside. Like sha, I've never missed one, though I fizzle out early of late. I'm in.

and I've never missed one either!! lol!

Looking forward to this one again. Thanks for hosting!

I think I have to bulk up my animal selection, although participating in the Sept. 19 Talk Like a PiRATe Day challenge will net me a bunch of rodents.

Thanks for organizing this again.

I don't know how many I'll release but I cleaned out my bookshelf earlier this year and I put aside all the animal books because I decided I would release them in September. I just registered them yesterday. They'll be going with me on holidays. So I'll probably release them also for the 52 Towns in 52 Weeks challenge.

I always love it when I can do a dual/tri/quad release, don't you?

Trying to get back into the Release Challenges again and this has always been one of my favourites. Please count me in, Secretariat as I'm sure I have some animals hanging out on my bookshelves :-)

Comme d'habitude, my way....

Great. Good to have you back again. I'm looking forward to watching your releases. The pics are always so nice.

waiting for you. Let the games begin :).

Are releases to non-BCers ok? I sometimes pass books onto non- bookcrossing friends & count them as wild - none of them yet have made a JE commenting on the books despite me asking nicely!

Just wondered if these types of "wild-release" would count or not. Thanks.

Sorry, no, they wouldn't count because you know who they are going to and, thus, it's not a wild release.

May I join?
I've never attempted one of these, but am willing to try. And I will have to really look at embedded words to get at least twenty releases.

Late Entry
I swore I wouldn't sign up for this, because I keep signing up for challenges and releasing books, but never putting them on the thread. However, I just got home from a trip to the Zoo in Baltimore, where I released everything on my AVL shelf that had anything to do with animals. I then realized that 9 out of 10 would count for this. What the heck?

1. Bless The BEASTS http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8428576/
2. The Black CAT http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8642486/
3. The Dirty DUCK http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/10291333/
4. The SALMON of Doubt http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11160620/
5. Rahi BEASTS http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11317452/
6. Paddington BEAR's Favorite Things http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11317660/
7. What are WHALES http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11317681/
8. DOG Detectives and Other DOGS with Special Skills http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11317689/
9. The CHICK and the DUCKLING http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11372819/

Best of all, I know at least 2 of them went home with someone, because I saw them leaving the zoo.

I have family visiting this weekend, and we went up to a state fair today, so I took along a few books:

#1. Talk to the Hoof: Cartoons for People Who Love HORSES ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11221756/ ), wild release at horse-team event, with picture.

#2. BEAVER on the Sawtooth ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/10416160/ ), wild release, with picture - very loosely themed, in that I left the book near a sand sculpture of horses, and beavers and horses are both animals. [And beavers sometimes get sandy? Um... never mind!]

#3. The bROOKlyn Nine ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11347760/ ), wild release, with picture - themed, as it's an animal challenge and I left the book in the llama barn, even though I don't know how much llamas and rooks have to say to one another.

#4. Jane on Her Own: A CATwings Tale ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11347757/ ), wild release, with picture.

#5. By BalLOON to the Sahara ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11362785/ ), wild release, with picture; sorta-themed, in that the book involves a hot air balloon and I left it near a ferris wheel, which also takes people up in the air.

Release 23

#9. The ScrewtAPE Letters ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/10510908/ ), wild release, themed (letters/post office).

#10. The Banshee TrAIn ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/10416114/ ), wild release. [I think I first learned about the ai (a kind of sloth) via a previous Such An Animal challenge, but it's also turned up in crosswords, and I stumbled across a reference in a book I read recently as well; it alone could make a huge number of titles qualify for this challenge, but it seems a bit too easy, so I'll try not to rely on it {grin}.]

#11. The Adventures of Chatterer the RED SQUIRREL ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11347754/ ), wild release, themed (at a petting zoo), with picture.

#12. The PedANT in the KITcHEN ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11049396 ), wild release, with photo.
