The challenge starts at 12:01 am (your time) on Saturday June 23 and continue it until Monday July 2 at 12 midnight (your time). That will give us 10 full days of releasing!

Here are the rules for the challenge:

1. Books written by Canadian citizens or landed immigrants count.
2. Books set in Canada even if they are not written by Canadians count.
3. Books must be wild-released but I will allow OBCZ releases as well.
5. Anyone can join.
6. There will be prizes distributed as follows:
a) Prize for most books released in Canada
b) Prize for the most books released outside of Canada
c) Prize for best release location
d) Prize for most books reflecting the special theme released by one releaser
e) Prize drawn at random from the Canadian participants
f) Prize drawn at random from the non-Canadian participants
g) Prize drawn one month after end of challenge for best catch
h) Some just because prizes

The special theme for this year is books by or about Margaret Laurence or books about cancer. That could be fact-based books or it could be fiction in which a character has cancer or any other link you can draw to cancer (maybe even a book about the astrological sign). Remember, though, these books have to be written by a Canadian or take place in Canada.

Last year there were 840 books released which was quite an increase from the previous year. I'm hoping to see an increase from that number.

Please indicate in your post if a release is for the special theme or if you have tried to do a themed release for a book and are trying for the best location prize. You MUST give the link for the release and if you can indicate in the subject line what day and the number of releases that will be a big help to me.

Have fun!

If you want to check out this year's and other year's challenge charts go to the special page Ibis3 has created for the Canada Day release challenge:

Additionally I released Red Rooms at the Inn of the Forks hotel because all of the stories in the book are stories of a hotel chamber maid that she imagines from the stuff guests leave behind in their hotel rooms.

7. her sparrow by Carol Brisebois http://www.BookCrossing.com/---/11175444 was released on The Esplanade (Provencher Bridge). The story takes place in Winnipeg and the bridge itself is the location of a very significant event in the book. (To say what the event was would be a spoiler, so you'll have to trust me on that!)

Way to go with the first catch, Maranlin!!

#2 Love in the Temperate Zone by L. R. Wright:
#3 I Heard the Owl Call My Name by Margaret Craven:
#4 Klee Wyck by Emily Carr:

Love in the Temperate Zone was released in Lac du Bonnet which may not be exactly temperate but it's a pretty lovely town. The other two were released together at the Pinawa Dam Historical Park. I thought this was an especially appropriate spot for I Heard the Owl call my Name because Pinawa is known in the birding community for having lots of owls. I unfortunately didn't get to see any but we did see two adult and a juvenile sandhill crane just down the road from there.

* gypsysmom, I'm thinking you may wish not to count these as true wild releases, although technically I don't know who will end up with them. A couple of years ago I had a conversation with Daniel Wiwchar one of the owners of Book Fair downtown about how he should stock more Canadian graphic novels, take a chance on Canadian talent... blah, blah, blah. (Yes, I do this all the time in bookstores). I told him about Von Allan who was at that time just starting out as a graphic novelist in Ottawa. Anyway, I figured today, I'd give him these two graphic novels and he could sell them if he wanted, give them away or keep them for himself. As it turns out Daniel wasn't in the store today, so I left them with the woman who was. I gave her a little synopsis of BookCrossing, the fact that these two books had been out in the world and that when Mr. Wiwchar came back to the store, he could do what he wanted with them - sell, give away, or keep. I haven't heard from him yet (and I may not - he may just think I'm some kind of a nut! Hahaha...who me?)

* gypsysmom, I'm thinking you may wish not to count these as true wild releases, although technically I don't know who will end up with them.

Ah, I'm feeling generous plus the releases are in the spirit of the challenge i.e. to get more Canadian books out into the wild. So I'm going to allow them.

I wonder which will be the most commonly released book this year? My bet is on 'The edible woman' ;)

I must apologize for not doing a chart update yesterday. I was out with my book club for our wind up meeting before we break for the summer. You know how it goes when booklovers get together -- one book discussion leads to another then to an anecdote from our lives then a discussion of summer plans and so on. It was after 9 when we wound up and I was beat (but happy). I'll get the chart done tonight.

On page 25 of the book, one idea is to give away ideas by recycling books. The authors didn't reference Bookcrossing.com, which has been doing that very thing since 2002, but they did list Bookcrossing.com on page 40 which has a list of websites to join.

I had one themed release but forgot to indicate it. Sorry.
It was This Side Jordan by M. Laurence among the June 26 releases.

Gypsys mom are the Margaret Laurence releases also called themed?

Gypsys mom are the Margaret Laurence releases also called themed?

I know, it's kind of confusing but I don't know what else to call them. Maybe we can indicate the ones that are Margaret Laurence by saying 'ML theme' and the ones that are about cancer 'cancer theme' and the ones that have been left in a special spot related to the book somehow as 'themed release'.
