Complete Thread
This VBB is well overdue for starting up again - you must have all read your books by now :)
I will PM everyone and check that their titles are still available, they will then be listed on here.
We had some great books change hands last round, the old thread can be found here:
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/480610/

From previous thread:
My favourite genre of books doesn't even seem to have its own genre name. I call it Global because these are books set all over the world, from Afghanistan to Africa, Uzbeckistan to Brazil.
Basically it encompasses books that increase our understanding of another culture.
Things like the Kite Runner by Khalid Houssani come to mind as an example.

I hope new participants won't mind if I ask for one or two start-up books from each of you to get the box on its way. Those who still have books from the last round and who contributed books to start it up, will not be asked to add two more.

If you'd like to join in please PM me with your book title(s) and link(s) and post your interest on here so this thread doesn't disappear into the depths :)

Thanks for your interest,
DubaiReader.

(Into-the-Blue) - the list is here

The list of chosen books has been removed and is now posted below, due to the limit of characters permitted per post.

I am gradually sending PMs out to previous participants but do feel free to post on here if you haven't heard from me yet.

New participants also very welcome.

Could you include a cut off date for participants, as last time people signed up towards the end of the list (when most people had already seen the VBB) and so the likelihood of books they contributed being picked was very minimal. They asked for other peoples books and when the first VBB finished immediately indicated they were not interested in another round.

It seemed to me they were after free books and had no wish to mail any out to other people.

As a participant of the last round whose books were chosen but who did not pick any out myself I would like to sign up please.

I'd like to participate again.

Do I need to provide new titles before the VBB begins?
I don't remember what happened to the books I added to the first round, if they were all sent out by me or if the titles are still available / not taken in the previous round of the VBB list. (How I wish we could add tags to our registered books, so used to doing that on Goodreads and it is very handy in cases like this.)

I don't remember what happened to the books I added to the first round,

If you go to the thread from the first round you can see if you have any books left in the box (which it looks like you do)

Thanks Kiwi, I found the remaining book as you suggested!

And just sent a PM with 1 more book I'm offering to the seed list.

Thanks for your messages.
Thanks for the books Okyrhoe, I have added them.
Good point made by KiwiinEngland. I had an issue with this in another VBB I ran and the person concerned got very upset. Maybe I could stipulate that late-comers will be requested to keep their books in for a second round, whether or not they take part?
If they aren't happy with that then they can wait and join a new round when it starts up again. I don't like to turn people away :)
I still have a few people to contact but I'm away now til Sunday. After that we'll get the show on the road!
All your books went last round, KiwiinEngland, so no need to add more unless you want to. Let's hope you find some interesting titles this time around.....

It is up to you as it is your VBB, but as a participant it was irksome to see people join at the end, take books and run. Especially with the type of set up when people are asked to put books in at the beginning.
There is no guarantee people will still be involved with bookcrossing when the next round is run, nor that they remember to keep the books aside and not (say) wild release them.

Anyway, that's my piece said. And I am interested in seeing what is placed into the box this time around.

I think so, but it could have been a different one....anyway, I did join late, but my books were selected. I'd like to be part of it again.

I can add - Departing at Dawn by Gloria Lise (Argentina). It's a TBR but no worry.

Thanks for hosting, DubaiReader!

good news
I've found all of the books that I had in the VBB before (I've moved house - I'm not usually that disorganised with books) and I'd also like to add this one, set in Guyana:

Dear Death, Sasenarine Persaud http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11868498

No idea if it's any good or not as I've not read it yet, but Guyana is a tricky country to get!

Thanks
Thanks to those who have replied to this thread while I've been away and especially to those who have added books.
Tomorrow I will do a last check that I have contacted all those from the previous round and add any books that are still available.
Hoping we'll be up and running within the week :)

I can't resist it any longer.
But no books ready to go yet, so I will have to make more time for reading somehow.

Just in case anyone is concerned that Saskiasosmile, Erishgal, KiwiinEngland and Shroffland don't have any books in the new list, that is because their books were chosen last time :)

Just doing my last checking tonight and then I will put up the order for the list.
The wait is nearly over!!

I wanted to PM Vilda to confirm that she still wanted to miss this round but was leaving her books in, but for some reason she doesn't have the facility to PM.
I've never come accross this before. Can someone turn the PMs off? Is there something wrong at my end?

Just awaiting replies from Into-the-blue and Anniamanni, who I only PM'd today.
KiwiinEngland has asked to go first. As she didn't choose any books last round and has spotted some she'd like this time around, this seems a reasonable request to me :)
So get your replacements ready KiwiinEngland, we'll be off v soon!!

You can turn PM's off, if you wish. It is a function under the edit profile part of your bookshelf. However I know of late this has been turned off in error somehow for certain people. I suggest you do an ISO (which stands for In Search Of) for Vilda on the forums. Maybe look at where they normally post.

They still appear active, so try the Swedish forum.

It is now with KiwiinEngland.....

Yes, the list is with me and I'm reviewing it later today.

Did we give you too many choices?? :)

Did we give you too many choices?? :)

:D

It's a mighty fine list. I'm hoping to have it moving on soon, packed with some different but equally fine books.

Thanks to KiwiinEngland for her choices and replacements. The list is now on its way to Saskiasosmile.

Will have a great time choosing this weekend.

nr 7 All I asking for is my body
nr 17 The illusion of return

Adding: The marriage bureau for rich people, by Farahad Zama and Golden bats and pink pigeons, by Gerald Durrell which is still partly tbr, as I am currently reading it.

Thanks Saskiaosmaile, the list is now going to Okyrhoe.

Don't forget to send your address to the people whose books you have chosen.

I'd like to take out

The Dew Breaker, (KiwiinEngland) - Haiti http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/6574448

and am adding

The Lover by Marguerite Duras (okyrhoe) - France/Indochina/Vietnam http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11901908

I hope everything is OK with Shroffland as I've heard nothing.
I may have to move her to the end and send this on to the next person, as I'm travelling at the end of the week for my daughter's wedding in Malta :)

Sorry, i didn't realize how days had gone back since your PM arrived in my inbox. Received the list, and am reviewing it. I'll post my selections & replacements sometime on Wednesday (tomorrow).

Thanks for hosting one of my favorite VBBs!

And they came on the same day as well!
It was the day before yesterday. Sorry that I did not post here till now.
Many thanks Pam99 and kiwiinengland for sending and dubaireader for organising.

My choice

I would like to take
Desert Dawn: Autobiography by Waris Dirie, (DubaiReader) - Somalian lady
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11389079

And am offering
Anil's Ghost by Michael Ondaatje (Shrofflnd) - Sri Lanka, England, N. America
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/7403623/

Thanks for an excellent selection as always!

Your two books arrived yesterday, and they look like great.

The Yacoubian Building by Alaa Al Aswany, (Pam99) - Egypt
Dear Death by Sasenarine Persaud, (Pam99) - Guyana

Thanks Shroffland, I will get the book in the post to you when I get back from my daughter's wedding in malta.
I fly tonight and will be away for a week so this will stall until then, I'm afraid.
The list is now with Dancesports and if she posts on here, Pam99 can make selections if she likes. I will take up the reins again when I return.

I'd like to join if this is still open.

I've heard nothing from Dancesports and it's now been at least 10 days and two reminders, so I'm going to move her to the end and offer the list to Pam99.

Book-a-neer, are you happy to commit to this AND the next round of this VBB?
The reason I ask is that there was a comment early on in this thread (scroll down to the bottom) about people who came in late, didn't offer their books for the whole thread and then left with 'free' books. I'm sure you wouldn't dream of doing that, but to keep the other participants happy, are you able to commit to staying with us for another round? Unless, of course, your books get snapped up, in which case, no problem! :)

Thanks for the pm DubaiReader.

I understand the concerns of the other members of this group and I do intend to stay on for the next round or two of this VBB. If I do get a chance to get a book/s but my book doesn't get chosen, the I will put those on reserve and will still be up for offer in the next rounds whether or not I have joined it. So if someone chooses my book/s further on then just pm me and I will send it through.

Thanks.

Edit: Following books are offered for this VBB:

1. The Poet by Yi Mun-Yol (China). http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11914206/
2. Satan in Goray by Isaac Bashevis Singer (Poland). http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11914170/

Thanks to Pam99 for a very quick turn around, the list now moves on to.....ME!

Welcome to Book-a-neer, who has added 2 new books to our choices.

I would like to choose:

The Poet by Yi Mun-Yol, (Book-a-neer) - China
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11914206

The Lover by Marguerite Duras, (okyrhoe) - France/Indochina/Vietnam http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11901908

Departing at Dawn by Gloria Lise, (Icila) - Argentina
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11586498

Satan in Goray by Isaac Bashevis Singer, (Book-a-neer) - Poland http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11914170

Amsterdam Affair by Margaret Austin, (KiwiinEngland) - New Zealand/The Netherlands
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11521217

And offer:
Three Sisters by Bi Feiyu, (DubaiReader) - China
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11835201

The Help by Katherine Stockett, (DubaiReader) - 'slaves' in Missisippi
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11835702

The Loved Ones by Alia Mamdouh, (DubaiReader) - Iraq
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11835367

The Ghost of Che Guevara by Jason Webb, (DubaiReader) - Colombia
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11874858/

Touching Earth by Rani Manika, (DubaiReader) - Balanese and Sicillian characters, Malaysian author
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11941446

And I have chosen both Book-a-neer's books so she's now officially 'in' !!

Will just be finishing the book and sending it on to you. Is that ok?

And I'd also like to correct info on the book The Poet - this is actually set in Korea and not China.

pam99 6 yrs ago
oops
forgot to post my choices and donations...

I chose:

Disgrace by J.M.Coetzee, (Elskaliam) - S.Africa
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/10349786

Golden Bats and Pink Pigeons, by Gerald Durrell, (Saskiosmile) - Mauritius
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11727227

and I put in:

Bitter Sweets, Roopa Farooki (Pakistan & Bangladesh) http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11037116/

The Sheltering Sky, Paul Bowles http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/11753855/ - still TBR. I'd mistakenly credited this as being set in the Western Sahara but on further investigation (http://www.bookdrum.com/books/the-sheltering-sky/9780141187778/setting.html) the consensus seems to be that it's based on what is now Algeria.

If anyone was worried about Dancesports' disappearance, she is now back in contact, just snowed under with weddings and other good things :)

No probs Book-an-neer, pls send both books together when you've finished the current one. i have corrected the info for The Poet, thanks.

Update
Soffitta1 has chosen three of our books but has asked to delay her offers until Wednesday when she will be at her parents' house and can sort out replacements.

Apologies to those who are still waiting for the list.

Soffitta1 will be deciding on her replacement books on Wednesday but I'm away from home and most likely with no computer access until the following week (10th June).
I will ask her to post her replacements on here and Elskaliam can then work out which books she has to chose from. Hopefully this can keep going while I'm away.

and I'll replace it with:

Esperanza's Box of Saints by Maria Amparo Escandon (Mexico/USA)

Thanks for hosting, Dubai, and thanks all for so many great books!

The list is travelling to Book-a-neer.

Thanks to Ersihgal for a quick response.

I agree with the others that there are many good books here but my final choices are:

The Marriage Bureau for Rich People

From a Crooked Rib

and I'm replacing them with the following books:

Under the Wide Blue Sky - Canada
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/9935503/

The Builders by Maeve Binchy - Ireland

Thanks again for this VBB.

Great choices - I had my eye on the Nuruddin Farah book too :)

The list now travels back to Dancesports, who didn't have time when the list came to her earlier. Then I'll just double check whether Into-the-blue has changed her mind about receiving the list. Then we're done for another round!

How long do we want for a reading break before we start up again?????

How long do we want for a reading break before we start up again?????

I wouldn't mind a number of months. What do people think of three months? If the VBB was run with a three month break in between it would run about three times a year, which seems frequent enough to have read books in between.

Yes, Kiwiinenglands idea seems about right.

OK
I'm happy to do that, but what always seems to be a hurdle to me, is contacting everyone by PM beforehand to confirm they are still interested. Does everyone lurk around the Bookrings, Bookrays, and Bookboxes thread? I must admit I pop in and out of there sometimes but just keep current threads open on my tabs.
Ideally I would post in 3m and you'd all respond?????????

Yes I do and I'm still interested. September seems a good time to start again.

I lurk on the forum, and check to see if there has been any activity on threads that I am participating in. I look forward to the reading break and would like to join in the next round.

DubaiReader, as always, you do a fantastic job of coordinating this VBB and everyone's contributions are wonderfully rich and diverse. Thanks for a delightful reading and sharing experience :-)

Shanghai Tango by Jin Xing (China) http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/6254598/
The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima (Japan) http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8286186/

I will post back here in Sept and start this up again.
Meanwhile, if you want to take any of your books out and replace them with others please just post on the thread, otherwise I'll assume the books will stay as listed.
If any books have done a full round unchosen then it would be good to exchange them. We probably each know if our books fall into that category. I think my copy of The City of Falling Angels has done a full round (surprisingly!).

Do we want to keep the same order, so that there is the max chance of different books being available by the time it gets round to each of us again - or would you like me to shuffle the order again?

I'm just sending the list off to Into-the-blue and then we're done til Sept.
Have a lovely summer, I'm off to UK so the sun had better shine!! And then my son's wedding in Italy, that'll be fun :)

I am Not home until Tuesday night. Will get back to you them

Received it today - thanks very much

and put Esperanza's Box of Saints in the mail (to dancesports) today. Also journalled How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents (from Soozreader).

September sounds good, and I actually like that you change up the order each round ~~(wish the mystery vbb I'm part of did that).

I am still waiting for one book, from Dancesports. They said they would post it is mid-May but nothing has arrived and they are not responding to PMs.

The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima, (Dancesports) - Japan
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8286186 to KiwiInEngland

No.

Well, I wasn't going to report this as my TBR is so huge that one missing book isn't a problem for me. But now it looks like I am not the only one Dancesports owns a book.
I am still waiting for a book I had chosen from another round of this VBB in Oct. 2012

I think this is a good reminder to mention things as they happen, as Dancesports could have been left off the list for the second round until she had fulfilled her first round obligations. Did anyone get a book she promised out of this VBB??

Sorry I have been offline from book crossing for a few months, if anyone else is waiting for a book from please send me a pm and re confirm your address. I am more likely to receive the pm through email than to see posts here.

just sent you a pm
