Jealously, I've watched the UK 1001-Library VBB circulate. So I've decided to see if I could get any interest in a US/CAN version! I've contacted the Library and obtained their blessing. ;)

Here are the most important points:

- We're beginning on September 23, so you still have time to get some reading done.

- Although I'm going to limit to 1001-Library members for the time being, the books in the VBB do not need to be registered to the Library. I'm starting off with 12-14 books and they'll be about 50-50. They do need to be registered with Bookcrossing, of course. *Edit: Vasha will now be donating books for the starting pool, so all starting books will now be 1001-Library. Yours still don't need to be, though!*

- Any book you include must appear in any of the three editions of the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. If you're not sure what's on the list(s), please check out the spreadsheets linked on the 1001-Library's profile. If you like reading general literary fiction, odds are good that you already own a big chunk of the list without even realizing it!

- Open to 1001-Library members in the US and Canada

- Most importantly, if you're not yet a member of the 1001-Library but are interested in joining, please check out their profile here: http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/1001-library/

HOW IT WORKS (stolen from the mystery VBB hosted by bookstogive with very few modifications, hope that's okay!) --

If you would like to join, just post here and where you are and you will be added to the list. This is an US/Canada Bookbox so you need to be prepared to ship to either.

When it is your turn I will PM the list of available books to you. You will have 7 days to make your selections from the list. You then post on this forum thread which books you are taking and which ones you are adding to the "box". Also PM me with the info as well, and in my PM please include links for the books you are adding. You may take as many books as you like and replace with the same number. You may include more books if you like. Please do not add a book that is already on the list. If I don't hear from you after four days, I'll send the list out again just as a reminder and to make sure it was received.

You then pm the person holding the books you have selected and they send those books to you. Please send your requested books out in a timely manner (within three weeks), but if you are having a problem getting it out on time just let me and the person who has selected your book know.

The list then gets updated with the changes and moves to the next person who takes their turn.

If this goes well I'll do another round. EDIT: We'll see how long it takes us to get through Round 1, and at the end we can see how many will be interested in a Round 2, and how soon we want it to begin. If you would like to stay on for Round 2 and have a book left in the VBB at the end, we can put it in the starting pool for Round 2.

So! Is anyone interested? Please post here or PM me if you'd like to join, or if you have any questions or comments. This will be my first time running a VBB so do let me know if I'm missing anything major!

I have some 1001 library books that need to travel.

Added you, thanks!

I definitely have some 1001-library books.

Thanks for the pm

Thanks for the PM. Have to look for a few in my piles.

Very interested, just PMd.

Hooray! I was so worried no one would be interested.

Bump!
I've been trying to PM US/Can Library members individually to get the word out, but it's slow going. We'll be starting on September 23, so you have plenty of time to read your 1001 books!

another 1001 book so I have a few to offer.

Great! I'm busily reading my 1001's as well because I want to start with a good variety. :) September 23 is when we will begin, in an attempt to get some more signups between now and then.

I'm in, I have a few 1001 books that I'd like to see traveling again.

And as an aside, I would like to apologize to Kobie03 for the annoying PM when you were already on the list, just got into the groove I guess. :)

I hit the book store yesterday to snap up some more to add to the 1001 library :)

you are on the list! thanks!

Question
If the leftover books (at the end) are already part of the 1001 library, will the raffle winner have to take on the responsibility of keeping them available for library members, or will they be withdrawn from the 1001 library pool instead?

(Thanks for the PM)

flewry 9 yrs ago
RE: Question
Yes, in theory all the 1001-Library books in this VBB, including those that end up in the raffle, should be returned to the Library "shelf" when they are available again.

If any books are still not chosen in the raffle, I will offer to their owners to adopt them for storage. I just didn't want to do this automatically with any books I know I'm not going to read, if there's another participant who would. The raffle is obviously optional; I completely understand if people don't want to end up with more Library books than they put in, since they can be difficult to move!

Please let me know if any of that didn't make sense. :)

I currently have 3 library books that would love to circulate.

You sent me an email re: this ... thanks for alerting me to it.
I would like to join but never having got into book boxes before I can only ask for patience & understanding if I do something wrong....
Count me in and will 'give it a go'..

Thanks to both for joining!

Oppem, of course! Hypen8 posted a great link (thanks!) that explains VBBs well. If you still have questions, just ask! Hope you enjoy your first VBB. :)

I wasn't sure I understood it and I was worried about messing it up. So I totally understand where oppem is coming from. :)

and I have a few books that can travel (I had better start reading them and fast), so please add me to the list. Thanks!

got you, thanks!

Good news!
Vasha will be adding books to the starting pool, so we'll now be starting with 20 books to choose from! Everyone should definitely be able to find something they haven't read yet. :D

:D

I received a PM with some great points, which has inspired me to change it up slightly from the original plan...

First, the raffle has been confusing people, and I apologize for not having explained this better. The way it works is, after Vasha and I make our selections, if there are any remaining that we have both read or do not wish to read, I PM a list of the remaining books to all participants. You then send me a list of which books you would like to receive, and I do a draw for each book, distributing them among participants who want them.

But, as the PM suggested, it probably makes more sense to do that a few rounds later, after we're getting a little burned out on it. :) So after we end I'll get a count of who's still in for Round 2, and how soon we should start... and if you have a book left and would like to stay on for Round 2, we'll leave it for the starting pool.

Again, please let me know if I'm not making sense and thanks for bearing with me as I try to stay organized. We have a great starting list and I'm quite excited to begin!

Thanks for the clarification. :)

I've decided to try to improve the Library's collections by sending a gift to any participant who donates a book on the Library's wishlist -- that is, not just adds it to the box, but also sends a PM to the Library confirming that it belongs to them. There's still over 500 items on the wishlist! (That's counting the ones that are a request for a particular translation or edition.)

So if you donate a WL book, PM me your address and I'll send you a surprise.

Ooh fun! I was surprised to see how many books are still on the library's wishlist.

I'd prefer to remain within the US, if possible.

Hi debnance!

I may just be totally blind, but I'm actually not seeing you on the 1001-Library's friends list? Just the kids' library... I know when the site switched over I had to re-add them as a friend, do you think it's something like that?

Also, just with the nature of how a VBB works, I can't guarantee you'll get US shipping. Right now we only have two Canadians I think, so it's likely, but I don't want to make any promises! Shipping an average paperback to Canada only seems to cost me about a dollar more than within the US though, if that helps.

So just let me know on both points and I'll add you to the list straightaway. I'd love to have you since I've gotten some great books from you out of jsmelter's 1001 box. :)

after I saw the other. sorry I misunderstood.

My choices...
I REALLY TRIED to narrow it down more than this. I just couldn't do it! Everyone shared such great books. :) I'll PM everyone shortly with my address. I'll put this in the message too, but it is completely fine with me if anyone whose book I selected would prefer to wait till after the holidays to send it.

So I'm about to PM this information to everyone, but figured I'd post it here as well just to make sure we're all on the same page.

Round 1 of the US/Can 1001-Library VBB has completed. Thank you so much for participating and sharing your 1001 books! Round 2 will be starting in January or February or so. If you still have a book in the VBB, please don’t feel obligated to leave it in for Round 2. We all know firsthand that 1001-Library books sometimes languish on our shelves longer than we would like, so if you have the opportunity to move one along before Round 2 starts, please do feel free. I will send a PM as we get nearer to Round 2, and if any of the books I have listed for you are no longer available, just let me know and they will be removed.

Thanks, everyone - I'm still keeping track as the books move along and will post a complete list of all the books that we swapped in a few days. I don't know if anyone else ever reads those, but I always think they are interesting.

Thanks to tabby-cat-owner!

Received
Atonement from Ayntastic....thanks so much! Love the postcard, too and will add it to my collection! :) I've wanted to read this one ever since I read Elizabeth Noble's "The Reading Group"...it was one of their books-of-the-month.

Also, have mailed book to Flewry; expect it in a day or so--it actually went first class, rather than media so hopefully will arrive quicker.

Scarfed a few 1001 books from the Friends sale...so next round I'll have a few more to share with the VBB!

RE: Received
Arrived safe and sound, thanks so much! I had quite a windfall this week, since Cat's Cradle from ayntastic and Alias Grace from ayntastic arrived as well. Thanks, everyone!

Thanks so much kobie03.

I haven't had a chance to mail out the books that have been requested from me yet, but I will be on Sunday. I'll post once they go out. It's been a crazy month at work with NHL, WHL trying to get all their regular season games in, plus World Junior Hockey and two concerts thrown in the mix. I'll be glad when December is over.

Altogether, 38 books have been swapped during this VBB. Nice! Below is the complete list, for those of us who are interested in that sort of thing. If there appear to be any clerical errors, or you see a book was selected from you but you never got a PM, that sort of thing... let me know.

Thanks Flewry.
The Rainbow by D.H. himself arrived today - many thanks for sending to me - look forward to re-reading it soon.

Very welcome!

Yes! New players are most welcome. Round 1 has completed and Round 2 will likely begin in February. I'll put you on the list for Round 2.
