Welcome to the INTERNATIONAL Virtual bookbox of
Fiction by Japanese Authors (translated into English) hosted by Samrana

One of the good ideas of bookcrossing has been to send a box of books around: you take some out, you put some in, you send it on.

A virtual bookbox works in a similar way but instead of physically choosing and adding the books to a real box and sending heavy and expensive mail around the world, you choose from a list, and add to a list. This way you only send out to those who choose your books.

Here’s how this one will work:

The books need to be fiction by Japanese Authors translated into English or written in English.

When it is your turn I will PM you with the current list - I havn't put the list up here, otherwise it will spoil the suprise!

You can choose as many as you like, but need to replace with the same amount of books. There should always be 10 books in the virtual bookbox.

Please PM me with the books you would like and the titles you are replacing them with.
(Don’t forget they should be books that are registered with bookcrossing!)

I have added the link to the journal entries for each book so you can find out a bit more about them. You might like to PM me with links to your books as well as the titles/authors.

I will PM you with the bookcrossing name of the person who has the book/s you have chosen. It is up to you to contact that person with your address details.

Please mail your book/s out to the people who have chosen them in good time within a month if you can- if life and Mount TBR’s allow!

You need to be willing to mail internationally, as this is an international bookbox and I can't guarantee who's going to choose your contributions. Surface mail is acceptable if this makes it easier for you.

As host of the virtual bookbox I will originally add ten books, so the ten left in at the end may come to me, unless I’ve read it, or prefer not to read it, or it’s one of the original ones I put in!

If you post on the forum what you choose, and what you are putting in, we can see what we all get.

Post now if you would like to join…. Let me know if you need to be nearer the end of the list…….

Any questions? Post on the forum or PM me.

ENJOY!

Back to me - Samrana and my turn to choose! LIST IS HERE

:-)

I've only got one book to exchange. Is that okay?

Absolutley. Glad you can join.

I'm looking forward to this VBB. Thanks for organising Samrana.

It's a great idea. Thanks Samrana. Please note that I'm in Australia so a long way away. If it's an issue due to postage cost, please let me know. I'm happy to be towards the end of the list.

Cheers

add me
But I need to do some reading! Please don't put me first!

Samrana 9 yrs ago
Marvellous
I'll keep collecting names over this next week or so and then start the box off. As the list grows if you want to be moved further down just let me know.

thanks for organizing :)

I'd love to join. Can I be placed later in the list? Thanks.

I did ask to join in the original thread about this VBB, and right now I am still interested and able to participate actively in things related to Bookcrossing.
But...I am going through a difficult period, things are somewhat stable at the moment and I can read books & be online, but if the situation worsens, I may have to ask to be skipped when my turn comes around.
I hope this doesn't happen, yet I do want the organizer & participants to know about the possibility.
So it's up to the organizer to tentatively put me on the list or leave me out. I will understand if it's the latter, no problem.

Tsjara and mathgirl40 added.

Ok Okyrhoe - How about if I add you to the list and when it's your turn, give you a couple of weeks to reply and if you are not able to I can skip to the next person? You can always be put back on later - if you are able to send books out to those who may choose them.

Any more?
Still open if you want to join.

The list has gone to the first participant - ApoloniaX.

If anyone else wants to join post here.

I was online when the list came in and dwelled over it right away... great books!!!
I picked VOICES ;-)
The Voice by Seicho Matsumoto and New Japanese Voices, a collection of short stories.
And added Deep River and Autobiography of a Geisha.
Thanks for organising this, Samrana!

And put in The Old Capital - Yasunari Kawabata
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/7658134/

My choices are:
Deep River - Shusaku Endo,
Makioka Sisters – Jun’Ichiro Tanizaki,
The Sound of Waves – Yukio Mishima

Replacing with:
Cloud of Sparrows - Takashi Matsuoka
The Elephant Vanishes - Haruki Murakami
Sputnik Sweetheart - Haruki Murakami

...
Deep River - Shusaku Endo,
...

That's one of mine. Coming!

The sound of waves - I read that for my world literature class in grade 11 and remember being very weirded out by the two page peach /pickle metaphor. ( I was a very self-sheltered 16 year old.) I hope you enjoy it!

... have already arrived today. Thank you, Samrana!
And Deep River is on the way to Tasmania, surface mail, hope it won't take too long.

I only now noticed this thread and would dearly love to join. Please pretty please? :)

No Problem Annimanni. Also added Lemon-Crisis who sent me a PM.

Any more?

and there are some old freinds on the list. it's a tough choice!

I've decided on:
Sputnik Sweetheart - Haruki Murakami
Cloud of Sparrows - Takashi Matsuoka
The Diving Pool – Yoko Ogawa

and will replace them with:
Kafka on the Shore - Haruki Murakami
Snakes and Earrings - Hitomi Kanehara
Betty-san - Michiko Yamamoto (TBR)

We have a really good list going on here - I've already read three of the books on the the list and had a lot of trouble choosing three out of the five I would have loved to read!

just an update, betty-san has been read and is ready to be sent!

Samrana 9 yrs ago
Yes I know
The additions have been really great - thanks everyone. Shame I have to see books come and go ... they all look so interesting. At the end of the VBB I will put up a full list of all the books that have been in. List about to go on to Tsjara.

Thanks Samrana, will make my choices later today or tomorrow.

This wasn't easy, but managed to choose just one :p

Snakes and Earrings by Hitomi Kanehara

and replacing it with

The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami (reading)
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/7928157/

Thanks for organizing the VBB Samrana!

oh, one of mine! I haven't seen a PM yet and i'm about to leave work for the day. I'll try to check over the weekend but it might not get out till Monday.

Thank you AppoloniaX and an extra thank you for including 'The Hungry Tide' by Amitav Ghosh, I really enjoyed 'The Glass Palace' so I am looking forward to reading this one too. But I have a few VBBs to read first. It would be fair to say my Mt TBR is toppling over :-)

I received the list today. Will look it over and try to have a decision made by tomorrow. Thanks, Samrana!

Oh, it's always so hard to decide!

I'll be taking these two books:
The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami
Shipwrecks by Akira Yoshimura

I'll be replacing them with:
After Dark by Haruki Murakami
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8398178
Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8398184

Is it too late to join? I've never done a VBB and not sure how it works.

You'll have to wait for Samrana to decide about joining, but basically in a VBB you get a list of books available (often 10) and who they are offered by.

You will have x amount of books that you'll put onto the list, so you can choose x amount of books from the current list, so long as you don't have any duplicates of titles already on the list. When you've chosen your books, you'll PM the offering participant with your mailing information and the book you want and you'll PM the organizer and post on the thread with the books you've removed and the ones (with links) that you've replaced them with.

and happy to add you - AliceF if you would like to join. This particular bookbox is Japanese Authors (translated into English) so any books on the list will be in that category, and any that are added by you should also be in the same category.

On your turn you will get a PM telling you which books are on the list, asking you which ones you would like and then you send me a PM to let me know which ones you want, and which titles you are adding to replace them. I've participated in a few VBB's and have enjoyed them. Just let me know if you want to be added - post again on the forum or send a PM happy VBB- ing!

Hi

Taking out:

After Dark by Haruki Murakami
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8398178

Thanks megami-no-ushi! I'm still reading The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, about 200 pages left.. (I'm a slow reader ;p)

I chose Betty-san and added Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Thanks for a great VBB!

Thank you for the list! I'd like to take out these three:

1. The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima

4. The Old Capital - Yasunari Kawabata
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/7658134/

Strangers - Taichi Yamada
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8080737/

In the Miso Soup - Ryu Murakami
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/6445092/

The last two are buried in my TBR pile, but I'll bump them up so I'll be reading them next =]

yesterday I sent off Betty-san to Annimanni and Kafka on the Shore to Okyrhoe.

This bookbox has been so smooth running due to the fact that you have all been so good at putting up posts and sending books off. Fab!

The list is now with AliceF and then will come back to me for my final choices.

Just saw the message that the list is with me... but I've not had any PM; can someone please help?

Thanks!

Should be with you soon!

From looking through the final list that AliceF has chosen one of my books. I haven't received a PM from her asking for it so I'll PM her in a mo.

I'll be posting Strangers off to Samrana the beginning of this week coming (and AliceF if I manage to get her address).

As no-one chose it I'll put Geisha of Gion (Mineko Iwasaki) up for RABCK in the RABCK forums in the next few days, so if anyone would be interested in it make sure you keep an eye out!

Thanks for organising this VBB Samrana! I much prefer virtual to actual bookboxes - saves a fortune on postage (especially if you find you only want one book!).

...AliceF has chosen one of my books. I haven't received a PM from her asking for it so I'll PM her in a mo.

I PM'ed AliceF as well as it appears I owe her a book, too.

Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto has been sent to megami-no-ushi.

recieved today! Thanks for your generosity!!

A bit later than I'd wanted to. I posted 'em first class, but I'd be surprised if you got 'em tomorrow.
Enjoy!

'Strangers' by Taichi Yamada arrived today. Thanks Lemon-Crisis, it looks good.

Thanks to Annimanni for 'Nocturnes' by Kazuo Ishiguro which arrived on the last day of 2010. Any more books arrived?

I'm expecting that my books from Australia got caught up in the christmas rush so I'm not worried yet...

Hi megami-no-ushi

Cloud of Sparrows was posted a while ago but I did send it seamail - hopefully it will arrive soon.

Sputnik Sweetheart is my next book to read - so it won't be much longer.

yes, I was referring to cloud of sparrows which you mentioned you'd sent. Don't feel rushed on my account!

rec'd thanks!

Thanks to AliceF for my books:

Snakes & Earrings by Hitomi Kanehara http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/8321278/

Hard-boiled/Hard Luck by Banana Yoshimoto http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/6691798/

Grotesque by Natsuo Kirino
http://www.bookcrossing.com/---/6547833/

I've sent Naruto 1 onto AliceF, which I hope should arrive soon.

Then I think there is only more more book to go to Megami-no-ushi and then the bookbox is all done.

Thanks so much everyone!
