I’d like to share some Asian books of mine and send them out into the world, so here’s another Virtual Bookbox (VBB) – about contemporary Asian literature (novels, short stories, memoirs). I.e. books written by Asian authors or authors of Asian decent, which are set in Asia or are about Asia (Asian society, migrants from Asia etc.), first published not before 1980. (No “western” authors writing about Asia, please.) (Geographical definition of Asia, Middle Eastern authors are okay too.) Do you have any good book (no trash please) that you’d recommend to others and that you’d like to travel with the VBB? And then send off to some other BookCrosser? In exchange for another Asian book you pick from the list…??? (Please keep in mind that you might have to ship international, cheapest rate is fine though.)
******************************* This is how it works: - I start off with a list of 10 of my own books. - You will receive the list by PM from me – as PMs sometimes don’t arrive please confirm when you got it. - Choose up to 4 books and request them from the owner(s), include your name & address. - Replace the chosen books with the same number of your own (they must be registered on your bookshelf). - PM me the titles and authors of the books you are putting in the box within a week. - Post here which books you have chosen. - The owner(s) of the chosen books send them off to you. - Please make your choices within a few days, pick the books you are offering and PM me – I will PM you again if I haven’t heard from you after 2 or 3 days, if there is no response after a week I will PM the list to the next person. - There should always be 10 books listed. (Edit: 12 now, because okyrhoe kindly donated 2) - When somebody asks you for a book that you have put on the list, please send it off ASAP, this might be international (but sending it by surface mail is perfectly alright). Please make proper release notes. - Please don’t add another copy of a book that’s already on the list. - I update the list and PM it to the next person. - At the end the remaining 10 books will go to me, as I had started the VBB by “donating” 10 books. But there will be more rounds of the Asian VBB…
next edit...: Adding your TBR books is no problem. When you tell me which books you put on the list please add "TBR" for books that won't be sent off right after they are requested but only after you read them (which shouldn't take more than a few weeks). As none of us ever seems to be running out of books this shouldn't matter as long as the requested books reach their new homes sooner or later - but it's good to know that it might take a while.
I like the idea a lot. Unfortunately I don't have many Asian books in english, since I read them most of the time in german. That gets me to my question. What languages will there be allowed to be in the box? Are there also people that read books in german, french, russian or esperanto? I also would like to read books in those languages.... Right now I only have some asian books in german for the box. But if there will be such a box after christmas break, I could also read some books in english, since I really enjoy books about Asia.
I'm afraid, this concerns only books in English, this is the English language forum after all. As far as I know there is an Asian bookbox announced in the German forum. Maybe there will be an second round of this VBB and you could join us then.
Here are the books that travelled with the VBB. Only a few of them are still in the box and even less will be so at the beginning of round 2, so this is purely for information. But who knows, maybe some will turn up in the box again when they are read....
can you please tell me who you are or I can't send the books to you! I see from the round 2 list that 2 have been taken from the list but nobody has PM'd me about them or requested them here. I need to know who you are and your addresses please! They are The Inheritance of Loss and From the Land of Green Ghosts. Thanks.
Round 2 list with me. Will get in touch soon with my choices and replacements!
I'm reading Hullabaloo right now and it'll be up for grabs in a week. THe second book however, is sitting at home so will take 3 weeks to get to it! Have PM'ed the owners of the books I picked out. Cheers!
Thanks ApoloniaX for sending me 'Waiting' by Ha Jin and also an extra surprise book 'Slate and me and Blanche McBride' by Georgia Savage - a Tasmanian author. Beautifully wrapped in newspaper and sticky tape, I tried to read some of the articles but can only recognise a few words, 3 years of high school German, which was about 30 years ago, doesn't help much. I only remember nouns like eine Tische and eine Fenster; which would make for pretty boring news. Thank you also for the stamps - which I wll give to my mum along with some from Denmark and the US.
"There is no mistaking a real book when one meets it. It is like falling in love, and like that colossal adventure it is an experience of great social import. Even as the tranced swain, the booklover yearns to tell others of his bliss. He writes letters
about it, adds it to the postscript of all manner of communications, intrudes it into telephone messages, and insists on his friends writing down the title of the find. Like the simple-hearted betrothed, once certain of his conquest, “I want you to love her,
too!” It is a jealous passion also. He feels a little indignant if he finds that any one else has discovered the book, too."
