On August 22, 2018, a special little STEAM School in a city near me that I was not aware of before [Navajo Elementary School https://player.vimeo.com/---/201191070 ] suffered extensive damage from a fire on campus. https://youtu.be/JKaXicUwOn4 Thankfully, the fire was after hours and no one was injured, but the interior of the building and all of its contents were destroyed by smoke and water damage...they lost everything. Another local school was able to offer them space to continue with their new school year for now, and the Community has rallied behind their immediate needs for supplies and things for the children. After knowing all were safe, including a class pet tortoise, as an avid Bookcrosser drawn to Bookcrossing because its aim is to "make the whole world a library", my first thought was that a new Library for this little Pre-Kindergarten - 5th Grade Elementary School will need lots of books!!! ; ) From the moment this news story aired, I knew immediately I wanted to send a box of books toward that end. Then I thought perhaps some of my fellow Bookcrossers would like to send a book, as well. And here I am with the address for the school if you're interested in joining me continue the Bookcrossing Legacy.

Hello Bookworm - I have 2 childrens' books and I will put them in the mail on Friday

This is a wonderful idea!
I will send some books but it may be next week before I can get them in the mail.

At your leisure will be just fine. ; )

I'll be including some Bookcrossing Press and Media Materials and information with a Introductory Cover Letter, along with several Bookmarks...in part many that I have collected from my Library's Summer Reading Program during the past few years. The last portion of my cover letter reads, "I have let my fellow Bookcrossers know about your situation, in hopes that those who are able to, might send you a book, too. : ) While postage from other countries is VERy expensive, you never know what may arrive in the mail from where when!!! ; D" They are going to be SO SURPRISED as the books start streaming in. : D

P.S. Just to be clear...personally, I am NOT about being in the news or media...NOT interested! I prefer anonymity & working behind the scenes to promote a cause & make a difference!!! ; ) Of course that wasn't quite possible when I ran the R.I.S.E. Reading Program for the Elementary School I worked for many years ago. ; )

Your first link isn't working. [https://player.vimeo.com/---/201191070]

Have you checked with the school to see if they will accept BookCrossing-labeled books?

Try again.

Thanks for your concern, solittletime, but that would completely spoil the SURPRISE...and it's not necessary. RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS, whether for Bookcrossing, or in general...are just that...RANDOM, no rules apply!!! ; ) I don't need to check to see if it's "okay" with someone. If you watch the video and hear the Principal speak and hear the message in his voice, you might be able to ascertain that in the midst of such a dire situation with NO books for the children...not a single one...they will be grateful for any books that are donated. The books will offer HOPE for the future of the students, their families, the staff and their families, the Community, the City, the State...like the ripple effect of a pebble tossed into a pond...and HOPE for the re-opening of the School, a new Library, and HEALING of the trauma and the scar...all of which will take quite some time. Besides, I...and other fellow Bookcrossers, will be introducing a whole new Community (and then some), and a whole new generation, to Bookcrossing, which incorporates SO much more that just Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math...it promotes Compassion, on SO many levels...at least in my humble opinion.

It’s a good point and one I was wondering too. If you’re concerned but still want to send a book, send one that’s not registered. But BOOKWORMINUSALL makes an excellent point. They are in need and I think the generosity of anyone will warm their hearts. I would think a label inside would work well but would refrain from too many stickers on the cover. They’re more likely to accept them if they’re unobtrusive.
At the very least, if for some reason they do object to the BC labels they would donate them elsewhere. Or use them to donate money.

Yes, inDEED, Spatial...THANK YOU for your support!!! The books I am sending, include some from other BCers, and all have a nice label on the inside cover, without other stickers on the outside. It will be fun for me to be able to add a Journal Entry to each one that states the books were being sent to the Navajo Elementary School Library. When the Principal opens the box, the first thing he will see is a sign that says, "ALL OF THESE BOOKS ARE FOR YOU TO KEEP TO START A NEW LIBRARY!!! : D" He and his staff of Teachers, together with his Librarian, PTO, and others, will be able to decide if they want to include participation in Bookcrossing...not unlike the inspiring BC Library that our fellow BCer MissMarkey maintains for her students. ; ) I've printed out BC's "About Bookcrossing" https://www.bookcrossing.com/about , the BC "Privacy Policy" https://www.bookcrossing.com/privacy , and the "Media Kit" https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/bookcrossing-media-kit-2010Q3.pdf ,so they are readily available to him without the need for him to go directly online.

Ordered some books on Amazon for them!

WONderful...THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH, InfiniteGrant!!! : D

The books I am personally sending, have all been purchased at one time or another from my City Library systems various "Friends of the Library" locations...and the circle continues...Library begat Library begat Library. ; )

Actually, a few have also come from a few of the Little Free Libraries in my City where I have left DOZens of books over the years. ; )

Here's the link, in you'd like to join in. ; )

THANK YOU, whiskeyjane!!! ; ) I'm certain the children will love them.

You're welcome. Like I said, this was a New School to me, and the Principal just seems so deeply connected to it, and his students.

1. From the school website (8/30/2018)

2. From a News Article (8/31/2018) that also includes a link for online giving.

And a SPECIAL REQUEST for information for transportation resources and/or ideas (anyone travelling from South Carolina to Arizona and/or know any truckers who may be travelling that route that could deliver to the school?) that would enable another BCer to send books she obtained from a middle school, including various school encyclopaedia types she thinks would be fabulous for the school (I must agree!), whose weight makes them unaffordable for mailing? Don't know if the Principal, the School Superintendent, or the PTO would be willing to dedicate part of the online funds raised towards shipping, or not, and I will not have an opportunity to make calls and research that possible avenue for a few weeks out.

THANK YOU SO MUCH, Southernfryed. ; )

I was more than concerned when I read the updates I recently posted, that with all of the technology (computers and such) that the school uses, they may well be very cramped for space once everything gets replaced. Sad to report that through a lot of extra effort put in by another BCer [THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!], word from the Principal is that they will have to give up a Library for now...and I think the Student Body is actually split between campuses, as well. Good to know though, that the Community has been so supportive, and that the classes do have some books in them for the children...although their generous donations do still...not a Library make. ; ) I really appreciate all of those who have participated in this effort thus far. Further donations will have to be put on hold...for now. ; )
