Carpenter and his dog travel the world

As any mom knows, summer vacation is a mixed blessing. Yes, it's great to have my children home, all to myself. But I also have my children home, ALL TO MYSELF. And the fun wears off about 3 weeks into the vacation. So I'm always trying new things to keep
them busy.
Since I've been active in BookCrossing this year, I thought, what better way to teach them a little geography and get them interested in something besides television, than by involving them in their own project. So Mike's Own Ring was born.
I have this little stuffed carpenter doll named Mike. And Mike was also feeling a little bored, sitting in the back room. So I thought, why not send Mike on vacation? He could take his own journal along, and a camera, and write home as he visits around the world. Then my children will be excited to check the mail, and they can also check the computer to see what he's up to. This also helps a bit, since we can't afford a vacation this summer. But it would be almost like traveling themselves, if they could read about the fun he's having.
At first, I hoped for about a dozen or so participants. I should have known better! If there's anything I've noticed about BookCrossers, it is that they love a chance to get involved. When the list quickly grew to over 20, I realized that Mike might not be home before Christmas!
So he enlisted his dog to help. Mike would take care of the overseas visits, and Cocoa the dog would limit his stay to the United States. (Which is simpler, since he didn't want to get any more shots.) Between the two of them, they're going to visit 5 countries and 15 states, and 27 BookCrossers. They've already had lots of fun and posted some great journal entries that we've really enjoyed reading.
So, just in case your summer is a little dull too, I'd like to invite all BookCrossers to check out the Amazing BC Race, as Cocoa and Mike travel the world. They've been to some great spots already, castles, the World War II Memorial, Hadrian's Wall, and lots more.
I think this may be the best vacation we didn't take!
