interesting, i don't find edith wharton anything like jane austen. she's much darker, more tragic. i find her more nuanced, too, but that's just my opinion.

I love Katherine Mansfield's short stories and some of Virginia Woolf's (in particular, "Unwritten Novel" and "Slater's Pins Have No Points"). I also like Alice Munro, but I've only read a couple of her stories.
