BookCrossing's webserver now looks for http images in BookCrossers' profiles and tries to automatically route them through weserv's service.

You are right, but there's an easy solution! :-)
Nowadays it's default browser behaviour that "non-secure" (http without "-s") content in https-pages won't be displayed.
