Most recently for me was 'The Eyre Affair' and 'Lost In A Good Book' by Jasper Fforde. They even had me reading books aloud in the hope that I might jump in!

Stephen King's 'Pet Semetary' had me checking dark corners and never reading it at night if I was home alone! It was quite a few years ago but still rates as my scariest read to date.
