I Hate Poetry

I hate poetry
the way a junky hates the fix
he can’t afford
and will have to hustle for
and often enough
won’t even get a rush from,
just keep off the horrors
for another hour.
I hate poetry
the way a married couple
who don’t believe in divorce
hate each other.
I hate poetry
the way Alcoholics Anonymous
hates liquor
and has meetings about it.
I hate poetry
the way an atheist hates God
and shakes his fist
at the empty hole in the sky.
And the more poetry I hear
the more I hate it
and the more I write it.
Here I am

Well, my secret addiction, the one no one really knows about, the one I hide in many not so subtle ways, is Lonely Planet Guide Books. I know how crazy it is. I see them in used bookstores and on charity shelves and I have to buy them. I have even purchased a few from ebay. I save all my guidebooks from my trips, just for the notes. I have finally stopped buying the really out of date ones, and my bank account thanks me. So now you know. If, perchance, our paths cross in some distant land, take pity on this weary traveler and share a peak inside your Lonely Planet, or more aptly, our lonely planet.
